Hello everyone for Episode #21 of Playback! This week we are diving into OASIS! Now that their spectacular reunion tour is underway (which Brandon got to see at The Rose Bowl) we figured now was a great time to dive into their classic 2nd album - (What's The Story) Morning Glory? Brandon and I are both newbies to the Oasis canon, and this is actually the first album we've done on the show that NEITHER of us was familiar with beforehand. We go a little rough on this album, but I think we give it all its due praise as well. It's a rare, nuanced take from the Playback boys. Enjoy this episode, and please comment below what you think! Today, we are joined by Kyle Clark of the This Is Rad Podcast to discuss the amazingly underappreciated album THE MOLLUSK by WEEN. We quickly discuss the history of the band, as well as what makes their particular brand of genre-jumping hilarity work so well, despite not being a "comedy band." We break down all the great tracks on The Mollusk and debate whether this is even the best Ween album to have this discussion on. All in all, this was an incredibly fun episode. On today's much too long episode of Playback, we dive into the mystical world of Lee "Scratch" Perry, and the masterpiece HEART OF THE CONGOS! We talk about The Black Ark recording studio that Perry built in his backyard yard which was covered from top to bottom in mystical writings, sculptures, and painted symbols. We demonstrate the effects and techniques he employed to achieve such a murky, magical sound like the one featured on Heart of the Congos. We also talk about the cadre of unbelievable musicians that Perry had at his disposal for this album, and discuss exactly how sound of mind Perry was when it ultimately came to burning down his own studio. Today on Playback, we are exploring one of the most exquisitely produced and performed albums of the genre. Night Nurse is a towering achievement by a troubled artist in Gregory Isaacs, coupled with possibly the greatest reggae band ever assembled in The Roots Radics. We explore why there are misconceptions surrounding its recording process, the genius of bandleader Flabba Holt, and the million-dollar sound of Compass Point Studios in Nassau, Bahamas. In the wake of Bob Marley's death, there was no better collection of reggae musicians on Earth, and Night Nurse is an unparalleled masterpiece. In this episode, we reference several videos we watched in preparation for this discussion that are linked below: Gregory Isaacs - Live At Brixton Academy, 1984 (FULL CONCERT) https://youtu.be/betyKqTJfaQ?si=pWZQWfoZuz8as96h Flabba Holt Explains How He Produced The Classic Gregory Isaacs Album 'Night Nurse' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GtyAl_H3Dw8 Leave a comment below: Do you think Night Nurse is the best reggae album from the 80s?
