I assure you, this is certainly a unique memoir; not one that is seeking sympathy, but one that details, in brutal honesty, a dark path with mental illness. During the course of our interview, Dr. Clark made a statement that was so powerful in its simplicity, when it comes to cold cases: "Talk about it." Those three words are an inspiring reminder that there could be information that leads to these cold cases being solved. Her book covers the lives of numerous young women whose lives came to a sudden end, with no clear explanation. One can only hope that there will be someone who talk about these cases to shed new light onto their investigations. Her book gives these victims the dignity and humanity that they deserve, while presenting what is known about their cases. Rebels, I'm not quite sure why I kept on saying "spotlight on songwriting" and not "spotlight on songwriters", given how long I've been listening to this podcast, and have heard essentially all of their episodes. We really don't hear too many stories about "The American Dream" anymore. As I mention in the intro, Oksana's story comes as close as you'd expect to it. From a musical talent in Siberia to an amazing business in Los Angeles, it's certainly been an interesting road for her. And you'll hear about it in this interview. So, Arthur Frischman, aka The Long Island Sign Guy, has become quite the sensation with his historical trivia tidbit videos about Long Island. He had a bunch of great stories to tell in addition to the history stuff. I guess I could do video shorts about Mount Podcastia, but then they'd find me and I would have to pay the fine on that overdue library book. (I swear, "1Fish 2 Fish, Red Fish Blue Fish" was strictly for research purposes...) If you've never gone, Long Island (and really, the rest of New York State) has a lot to offer and to see (NY was one of the original 13 colonies in the US, and yet I'm still paying taxes on tea!), with a fascinating history. And I'm proud to say I can properly pronounce Hauppauge, Quogue, and Ronkonkoma (check out the theme to "Fake People Real Trivia" for proof!). I just have issues with that "JIF" or "GIF" thing. I can admit that in my vast inventory of episodes, maybe a handful could be considered truly inspiring. (Well unless, you want to be inspired to be a better podcaster than me, then, it's a low bar. But I digress...) This interview falls into that category of the select few. Imagine yourself in Mark's place, covering a concert which devolves into a horrific mass shooting. Would you have it in you to write a book about it, much less, a book about the power of community and healing? It's been certainly an interesting season for true crime, Rebels, so why not wrap it up with an episode about serial killers getting caught? Dennis' audio came out a bit choppy in spots (sorry!!), but he still paints a chilling picture of these horrific crimes. Another unique episode, Rebels. Rebels, a few clarifications first...in the intro, I accidentally referred to Paul's book as "Crime and Punishment", (which I believe is Dostoevsky) also, while Paul was gracious enough to speak to me while he was in Germany, he was not in any sort of prison. He was released 28 months into his sentence, in 2022, but you'll hear that in the interview. We all have our stories of a "personal hell", but I think there are only a few that can come close to the horror of being incarcerated. This a is a very honest and direct telling of his experience, which I'd imagine would be just as difficult to talk about. As you'll hear Paul say, it was therapeutic for him to tell the story, as will the upcoming sequel about his post-prison life.
