Saying NO to working in private practice is not what Kade Anderson had planned when he graduated from the University of Newcastle in 2020, but that's exactly what he decided to do. Instead, he now works for Plena Healthcare as a mobile Podiatrist in aged care and absolutely loves it. Based on what others had said, he initially had apprehensions about working in aged care, but for him, it is a perfect fit and gives him the work-life balance he was after.  Before podiatry, Kade had careers in Real Estate & Pathology, which meant he was slightly older than the average graduate. He did apply for multiple positions in private practice, but by the end of most interviews, he had already worked out he didn't want to work for them and that he wasn't a good fit.  "It was easy to see through all the BS they had placed in their job adverts".   Are you looking for a Podiatry Business Coach who thinks differently and has a proven track record of helping podiatrists excel in business? Doctor Bharti Rajput is an award-winning Podiatrist and Healthcare entrepreneur based in Scotland. After graduation, she pursued a PhD in Biomechanics, specialising in human movement analysis.  Her Late Majesty Queens Elizabeth III awarded her an MBE for outstanding podiatry service to the community, and she received her medal at Buckingham Palace in 2018 from King Charles III. In this episode, Bharti discusses the ten most important T's in podiatry and why they are all important for our careers and the podiatry profession.  The 10 T's Title of the profession. We need to reduce confusion in the community.  Training Years at the point of graduating. Taking care of oneself every day. Taking time off to enjoy life.  Nurture your team's Talent.  Taking care of your team.  Tiered Care Structure. Setting new Trends. Ditch Toxicity.  Total care of the patient.  Bonus - take time out to enjoy a cup of tea. Below is Bharti's Indian Masala Chai recipe. Masala tea is a blend of black tea with spices believed in ancient Indian traditions to help boost your immune system.  Step 1:  Take a mug of water and a tea bag (for each cup of tea) and tip into a pan and place onto the stove (hob) for 3-4 minutes Step 2: In a pestle and mortar, put in a cardamom pod alongside cinnamon, clove, black peppercorns and even ginger and bash to help release the oils - a lot of families grind this down in a blender in  advance and store it in a jar ready to use as needed Step 3: Allow the tea to have released its colours before lowering the heat to a gentle simmer and adding 1/2 a teaspoon (per cup) of this spice mix.  Step 4:  Stir approximately two tablespoons of milk (per cup) and allow to simmer for 3-4 minutes until you get the strength of tea you desire. Step 5:  Turn off the heat and leave to infuse for a couple of minutes Step 6:  Pour into a mug, put your feet up and enjoy :) If you have any questions about this episode, please email me at tyson@podiatrylegends.com Business Coaching  Are you looking for a Podiatry Business Coach who thinks differently and has a proven track record of helping podiatrists excel in business? If we want the podiatry profession to grow, we can no longer tolerate podiatrists with out-of-date, old-fashioned, toxic thinking.  On this episode, I am joined by six dynamic young podiatrists who openly share their thoughts and opinions on how they think the podiatry profession can be improved. Some of their comments may shock you.    My guests were: Tea Nguyen, DPM (USA) Joe Keain (AUS) Jackson Tisdell (AUS) Cameron Bennet (AUS) Samuel Turner (AUS) Asraa Kattoub (AUS) The idea for this episode came from a previous episode (240 - How to Improve the Podiatry Profession).  If you have any questions about this episode, please email me at tyson@podiatrylegends.com Business Coaching  Are you looking for a Podiatry Business Coach who thinks differently and has a proven track record of helping podiatrists excel in business? If you want a successful podiatry career, stop investing heavily in social media and instead connect more with your local community. Being seen and heard in your community is a far better career investment.  Prosper Taruvinga is a digital marketing strategist who you would think would be telling everyone to be on as many social media platforms as possible, yet, in reality, he says the exact opposite.  We Are Lab Rats Social media algorithms are constantly changing, and we are lab rats. Sometimes their changes work in our favour, and others can be catastrophic.  You do not own your social media platforms, you're just borrowing them, and they can remove you without any notice; therefore, you should create content and post it to media outlets you own, such as your website or even a podcast.  Where to Start Instead of randomly posting on social media, hoping to get a like or comment, write content for what people are searching for online. When patients search for a particular problem and your information shows up consistently, they will contact you.  An article read by ten people in your area is far better than a thousand likes on Facebook from the other side of the world.  Where Does Google Get All Their Information From?  They are not creating it themselves; they get it from everyone's websites. So basically, Google is simply optimizing the information presented to them; therefore, creating good information is a must-do.  Stop Wasting Time in Line How often do we see people standing in a long line checking their Facebook and other social media pages? It is a total waste of time. An alternative would be to talk with the people around you or use your time to return a phone call.  Few Emergencies Most foot pain is not an emergency, so people start searching for it only after they've had the problem for a period of time. You need to create the content, be part of the journey, and walk alongside them.  "We get paid in direct proportion to the value we bring to the marketplace." - Prosper Taruvinga.  Social Media is an enhancement of what you've already created; it's an accessory to your main content that sits on your website. Having a great website is non-negotiable, whereas social media is something you can go without and still survive.  Drive people to your website, not to your social media pages.  If you want to connect with Prosper, search for Prosper Taruvinga, and he's easy to find; he also has a podcast called the Online Prosperity Experience, which is a 30-minute daily podcast.  If you have any questions about this episode, please email me at tyson@podiatrylegends.com Business Coaching  Are you looking for a Podiatry Business Coach who thinks differently and has a proven track record of helping podiatrists excel in business? Nick Knight owns NK Active in Romsey in the UK, and he has developed a complete education package for patients so they can get all the information they need about Plantar Fasciitis in one place. And it's FREE.  Facebook self-help groups have become the Doctor Google, and there is a lot of misinformation. Experience has also shown that patients don't want leaflets, brochures and other handouts. The course is being delivered in bite-sized pieces incorporating webinars, videos and other downloads. We should be using technology and making it more accessible for patients to consume.  Speaking The patient's Language Plantar Fasciitis is not always the correct term for certain types of heel pain, but it is the term patients search for online. If you want to be found, you must use the right terminology.  Once you can speak the patient's language, it becomes easier to teach them.  Episode Sponsor - Podiatry Clinic Websites NK Active Lunch Club Nick has started a Lunch Club on the last Friday of every month, where he and others discuss various foot and ankle problems, and what you'll learn is practical and can be used immediately in your clinic. Welcome to our first monthly book review episode. On this episode, I am joined by my podiatry friend and avid book reader, Carly O'Donoghue, and we could not think of a more fitting book to kick off our joint venture than Seth Godin's The Practice: Shipping Creative Work.  Neither of us could put this book down once we started, and it will definitely change the way you approach each day.  We plan to read a new book every month, and then we will share two or three of our biggest takeaways that we feel will be most helpful to our listeners and entice you to grab a copy yourself.  This episode is sponsored by Podiatry Clinic Websites. David Karamanis is an Australian podiatrist who had the vision to travel to high-risk developing countries to provide podiatry service to communities that cannot easily access it. To fulfil this vision, he decided to travel and volunteer his time in South America. When I spoke with David, he was in Ecuador.    He has a website, www.thetravelingpod.com, where he uploads photos of the people and communities he is helping. You can make donations via his website if you’d like to help support his efforts. I HAVE In this episode, we discuss the following: Working in a podiatry clinic was not ticking all the boxes; something was missing, and even though it was a good job, a Ted Talk made him realise his true calling. When his boss told him that one day if he worked hard, he could have a business just like his, and why David told him there was no way he wanted his lifestyle. He was so busy he could take holidays. When he realised that helping people function better was his thing, and a lot of his work in South America has been biomechanically based. At 50, David would rather be rich with experiences than have money and property. His passion for podiatry has grown since living in South America. It has opened his eyes. The Pizza Challenge to help orphanages and children who live on the streets because they always miss out.   “What do you do that excites you that much you forget to eat? That’s what you should be doing more of.” Final Tip  I encourage you to investigate yourself and look at the ideas and deep desires you’ve always had, but you’ve pushed aside because of family and other commitments. Just because you work as a podiatrist, you’re not just a podiatrist. Look deeper.  If you have any questions about this episode, please email me at tf@tysonfranklin.com.  Business Coaching  Are you looking for a Podiatry Business Coach who thinks differently and has a proven track record of helping podiatrists excel in business? Dr David Farnen is the co-owner of Cutting Edge Foot and Ankle Clinic in Nashville, Tennessee.  Today, we're going to discuss his career, business ownership, and how being diagnosed with rare, delayed onset, type-1 diabetes at the ripe old age of twenty-three was initially devastating for his career; however, it is now an asset, making him more empathetic to his patients.  We also discuss the following: Why Nashville is a fantastic city with true southern comfort, hospitality, food and music. The multifaceted aspects of podiatry. The stress of being asked if he was a drug addict before his diabetes diagnosis. How depression after the diagnosis forced him to leave the residency program and his thoughts around very few colleagues reaching out to see if he was okay. He felt embarrassed and didn't want to tell anyone other than his family. How it has helped him empathise with his patients. Why they expanded to five (5) locations around the city of Nashville The power and benefits of Social Media and why we should embrace it. If you want to connect with Dave, you'll find him on Instagram @itsdrdavedpm. "Patients want to know more about YOU as a person because they can use Google for their foot problems".   Final Tip - Treat everybody as though they're family, and BE NICE. It has been scientifically proven that we tend to overvalue our losses and undervalue our wins, which can affect our future decision-making. The good news is that people usually only remember your wins, not your losses, and Richard Branson is a perfect example.  My guest, Dr Jesse Green, is no stranger to the Podiatry Legends Podcast. He has been a guest on episodes 144 and 200, and I've asked him to come back to talk about why people focus so much on their losses and not enough on their wins.  Dr Jesse Green runs Practice Max, one of Australia's largest Dental Coaching Organisations and hosts the Savvy Dentist Podcast. This episode is a dual episode that Jesse and I decided to use on both shows.  In this episode, we discuss the following: A new word - PISSOFFEDNESS.  Why do we over-value our losses in life yet undervalue our day-to-day wins?  The reason people keep on hanging on to losses is that they don't want to admit that they've made a mistake. And it will hold them back from making the next decision! A good decision can still lead to a poor outcome. So what can you do in this situation? Expect that some of your decisions will be wrong the further you try to predict the outcome. What will happen in a week is much easier than what will happen in twelve months.  CAPACITY PLANNING - Using numbers to make your decisions based on past decisions and future predictions. You're working on the balance of probability.  So if you've had a few things go wrong and are a little bit 'gun-shy', what can you do to get back to making decisions and moving towards more wins? Remember, every big business you know of today … once started as a 'small' business. And every big business still makes mistakes as the company grows larger. When things go wrong, instead of just saying I knew that was going to happen and not learning from it, document what you learned in a BRAIN BOOK or journal and then use this information in the future.  The people who do well in their business practice over-value their wins and under-value their losses as a general habit. MATHEMATICAL FORMULA FOR SERENDIPITY - More Swings = More Hits.  The longer you take to start something, the less chance you have of actually doing it.  You can connect with Dr Jesse Green via his website https://savvydentist.com/, and if you have any questions about this episode, please email me at tf@tysonfranklin.com.  Business Coaching  Are you looking for a Podiatry Business Coach who thinks differently and has a proven track record of helping podiatrists excel in business? Estelle Humphris is a South Australian podiatrist who took up positions in country health, wound care and routine podiatry upon graduation. As time passed, she felt her knowledge of biomechanics and gait was slowly slipping away.   When she asked for help from senior mentors, she felt they were overwhelmed by the enormity of the subject and were unclear on where to start. Mentors told her to watch people walk in her local shopping mall and watch every client in the clinic. Estelle wasn't satisfied with this and made it her personal goal to work on her gait analysis skills and constantly ask her seniors questions on specific cases. She then thought: "how good would it be if she could put everything she had learnt into one resource for herself and others to reflect and learn from"...and so The Gait Movement online course was born. What else did we discuss on this episode: Taking a Gap Year between years two and three and living in Germany. Discovering she was Dyslexic in her third year and understanding why she had to work so much harder than everyone else. Modifying how she learns.  Being scared to ask questions as a new graduate and not wanting to be seen as stupid.  How close she got to leaving podiatry.  Imposter syndrome.  Estelle used to find initial consultations created a lot of anxiety because she didn't know what foot problem would come through the door until she learnt that all she needed to do was get through the first appointment. After the first appointment, she had time to prepare for the review appointment.  The Gait Movement Online Course is designed for new and recent graduates or podiatrists who may have lost some of their biomechanical and gait analysis skills. To learn more, visit her website www.thegaitmovement.com.au. You can also connect with Estelle on Instagram, Facebook and Linkedin at The Gait Movement.  Final Tip - Don't be scared to ask questions, and know that you're not alone. Dr Stephanie Oexeman is the owner of Oexeman Foot And Ankle, Chicago, IL. and hosts the She's a DPM Podcast. She specialises in lower limb peripheral nerve pain and injuries and is passionate about helping people with chronic pain and motor function disorders.  In this episode, we discuss the following: Expanding niches in our field – there are many opportunities to become good in one area. Ask yourself the following questions:  What are the conditions you read about the most? If you get a podiatry magazine with twenty articles, what is the first article you're attracted to? What article do you read past the abstract? Working together as a podiatry community. Why she started the, She's a DPM podcast.  Why you need to have an abundant mindset and not a scarcity mindset. Today, I am joined by four podiatry students from the Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane. The purpose of this episode was to better understand what they have learnt so far and how it feels to be heading into their final year of study and then finding employment.  My guests are Evelyn Liu, Caitlin Leslie, Bridget Hayward and Josh Taylor, who was my guest on Episode 185: Podiatry Trumps Accountancy.  These are the questions I asked: What interested you most about podiatry? How exciting is it, knowing you’ve only got one year to go? What part of podiatry are you enjoying the most? Which parts of the profession excite or concern you? What type of work are you looking for when you graduate? Will you stay in Brisbane? Have you considered working overseas? Do you wish there were areas of podiatry that you got to spend more time on at University? Bart Stenhouse is a 2022 Southern Cross University graduate, and he is living the dream. At age 35, he decided to go to university and study podiatry when he realised his love for music and that a 20-year career as a professional musician would not buy him a house. Bart has been able to mould his old and new careers together by working as a podiatrist part-time in two capital cities in Australia. He currently works in Brisbane and Adelaide, allowing him time to perform in various parts of the country on weekends.  Bart sent me an email after listening to Episode 109: Understanding Biomechanics Using Guitar Chords and told me that this particular episode gave him a little more clarity and understanding of where his knowledge was at with biomechanics as a new graduate.   "Like playing the guitar, I was an amateur for a long time before I became a professional. Learning Biomechanics is no different."  If you would like to connect with Bart or maybe have him at your next work party, please visit his website www.bartstenhouse.com. Many podiatrists are leaving the profession quite early in their careers, and there have been a lot of recent talks about what we can do to stop this from happening and, at the same time, how we can improve the profession heading into the future. So I thought, why not invite several podiatrists onto the podcast to share their thoughts? The purpose of this episode is not to solve all the issues we're facing but merely to spark the conversation.  On this episode, I have been joined by Richard Chasen (Victoria, Australia), Timothy Shea (California, USA), Sean Savage (Ireland), Bharti Rajput (Scotland), Bronwyn Cooper (New South Wales, Australia), Jonathan Small (England) and Judi Pascoe (Queensland, Australia).  If you enjoy this episode, please tell your podiatry friends to listen, as it's essential for as many podiatrists as possible to think about how we can ALL improve the podiatry profession.  You may also want to listen to Ep 209: Why I Left Podiatry (Part 1) and Ep 210 (Part 2).  If you have any questions about this episode, please email me at tf@tysonfranklin.com.  Business Coaching  Are you looking for a Podiatry Business Coach who thinks differently and has a proven track record of helping podiatrists in business? This is a solo episode, and I chose to go solo because it is the last episode for 2022, and I wanted to talk about a few essential topics that I think will make 2023 a more successful year for you, your career and your business. I've titled this episode, It's No Secret There's Money in Podiatry, and even though that is the same title as my 2014 book, the information I'm about to share is not in it. Important takeaways from this episode: Every big business started as a small business – Apple, Facebook and Nike all began as small businesses. Your attitude will determine your success – For every business screaming doom and gloom, another company is doing exceptionally well, which applies to every industry. "Whether you think you can or think you can't, either way, you're right". – Henry Ford. There are three things you must do: Set Business Goals – You must review them often because life tends to get in the way. Develop Business Systems – A business with systems will always sell for more than a business without systems. Understand Marketing Basics – This skill is required to avoid being ripped off and taken advantage of. What does Care Differently mean? If you want your business to be different, you've got to care about your clients differently, and giving them a discount does not mean you care; it only means you're trying to be cheaper than your competitor down the street. If you put your client's needs first, the rest of your business will fall into place naturally. My guest, Jeff Peterson, is the owner of Interstate Music in Wisconsin, USA, an online music business with a Musician's First Mindset. Jeff's marketing strategy with Interstate Music is mind-blowing and utterly different from how marketing is usually done in the music industry. It is pure genius, which is why he won the top honours at the Wisconsin Small Business Awards. I've always said you should learn from what others are doing in different industries and ask yourself, how can I apply that in my business? In this episode, Jeff and I discuss the following: The power of storytelling and how it can emotionally connect with the receiver. Human nature is about connectively. You either connect or don't connect with people, which can make everything or break everything in business relationships. What makes a person think they are good enough in their career to lead the charge to be an expert in their industry? Don't die with the music (or knowledge) still in you. The benefits of sharing what you know with others. You don't have to have all the answers. Business didn't come naturally; it was something I had to learn. When your business gets bigger, people will take potshots at you. What Jeff learnt taking over a business that went into bankruptcy and the importance of understanding the numbers of a business. Hire Good People When you're looking for people to join your Team, you should hire good people, not good resumes. They either have it or they don't. If they don't, they're not for you. Care Differently You've always got to consider what your customers want and need and whether you can provide it. You cannot keep being the same as everyone else and expect a different result, and simply saying you care more or giving discounts to beat your competitors does not mean you do.   You need to show them you care more with your consistent actions. You must find out what truly matters to your customers and deliver on that. At Interstate Music, they developed a Musician's First Mindset; they take what they do for a living and help them develop it further. They help them create content (video, photos, etc.) and work with them to develop their exposure in the industry. By building authentic relationships with Musicians, Jeff and his Team at Interstate Music are building long-term trusting relationships within the music industry. If musicians buy their equipment from Interstate Music in the future…well, that's a bonus. Do you have a Client First Mindset or are you focused on your needs?  Slow Bleed & Loss of Energy If you focus too long on your competition and not on your own business, it is a death spiral and slow bleed for your business, especially if they are not spending time thinking about you. Be aware of your competitors, and pay attention, but don't become obsessed.  Everyone gets into business for a reason, and there will always be some form of energy behind them making this decision. Don't waste your energy worrying about what everyone else is doing. If you do, you won't have the energy to work on your own business. Social Media Don't use social media platforms just because someone else is doing it. Ask yourself, will this platform work for my business? Are my ideal clients using this platform? If they are, work on a long-term strategy to make it work for you, don't just follow what everyone else is doing. The Power of Marketing When we recorded this podcast (and YouTube video), Jeff and I were drinking a can of Liquid Death, which is just a can of water. There's no screw top lid, which makes it slightly impractical and not very portable, but it is cool, and they have marketed it exceptionally well. Their tagline is 'Murder Your Thirst'. Jeff and I agreed you don't have to do something new, but you need to market it better or differently. How can you apply this idea to your podiatry business? What can I do to charge a premium in my podiatry business? Adapt Over Time You should be evolving and adapting your business over time. You should be updating how you do things. You should always be looking for a different perspective. Staying the same while others are moving forward means you are falling behind. You don't do this just for your patients; you're also doing this for your Team. They need to know they are in a progressive business.   Your Team needs to buy into your vision for the future. Learn & Share If you make a mistake or do something wrong, you've got to be able to work out why it was wrong and learn from it, and when you learn something new, share it with those that will listen.  Don't keep it as the best-kept secret. Suppose someone in your family needed medical treatment. Would you be happy if the treating doctor only gave them limited treatment options because they had a limited skill set, or would you prefer the doctor explained ALL the available treatment options, even if it meant they had to refer them to another doctor or specialist?   This is the basis of The LOVED ONE's Test.  Jonathan Small has appeared on this podcast nine times. I keep inviting him back because he delivers relevant, practitioner-driven content every time, and The LOVED ONE's Test is no different. He is also the owner of Health First Foot & Gait Clinic in Southam, UK.  In this episode, we discuss the following: Informed Consent. The Patient Experience.  Providing the best level of care. Building trust with your patients through referrals, don't be afraid of losing patients. Suppose you cannot treat a particular problem. In that case, it is better for the profession if you can refer them to another podiatrist that can treat the problem instead of referring them to a Physiotherapist or General Practitioner.  If you have any questions about this episode or Jonathan's Work Smarter, Not Harder 2-Day Workshop in 2023, please email me at tf@tysonfranklin.com. Did you know I co-host a second podcast show called the Podiatry Marketing Podcast with Dr Jim McDannald, DPM, aka Big Jim Mac? At the beginning of January 2022, Jim and I thought it would be fun to create a podcast about the two things we loved most, Marketing & Marketing. Each week we take turns interviewing each other. Jim interviews me on a particular marketing subject that I'm passionate about, and then on the alternative week, I turn the tables on Jim, and he gets to choose the topic. Most episodes are less than 25 minutes long, making them easy to consume and grasp the BIG IDEA from each show. If you enjoy the Podiatry Legends Podcast, you will also enjoy the Podiatry Marketing Podcast.  If you have any questions about this episode, please email me at tf@tysonfranklin.com, or you can contact Jim and me via the Podiatry Marketing Podcast website at https://www.podiatry.marketing/contact/. Kirsten Sinclair is a Scottish podiatrist who qualified from Queen Margaret University in 2001. She believes that if you’re unhappy with any aspect of your podiatry career, you need to take action and change it.  Kirsten initially worked in the NHS; however, after falling pregnant with her first child, within the first 12 months of her employment, she was not allowed to return to the NHS part-time. She was given a choice; work full-time work or leave the NHS. Kirsten decided to leave the NHS and instead developed a part-time home visit service to work around her children.   From Routine Care to MSK In 2018, after her children had grown up, Kirsten decided to open her own stand-alone private practice, some 17 years after graduating, and as Kirsten puts it, “it’s never too late”. However, after doing home visits and routine care for 17 years and not using her MSK knowledge, it did take some time for her to transition back into this area of podiatry. She found attending biomechanical seminars and weekend workshops and asking questions, especially from her orthotic laboratory, was especially helpful in improving her MSK skills. “If you want something bad enough, you will be prepared to do the work”. Bigger is Not Always Better Kirsten learnt that owning her own business can be stressful and bigger is not always better. You have far more responsibilities and stress when you expand and take on more team members. The stress of business ownership was difficult, and she often asked herself if going bigger was a good idea or if she should have stayed small and continued to work as a solo practitioner.  “I think a lot of podiatrists as themselves this same question”. Therapeutic Lasers In 2019 Kirsten was introduced to therapeutic lasers (aka photobiomodulation therapy/PBMT), which changed everything for her. Before this, she only used shockwave therapy but found laser therapy far more effective. In 2021 she started working for Celtic part-time and then in January 2022, decided to transition again from business ownership and take on a full-time position as a clinical demonstrator and trainer, teaching others how to use MLS laser to benefit their patients, their practice and them as practitioners.
