In this final episode of my four-part December solo series, I share why traditional goal-setting often fails podiatry business owners and what to do instead. If you've ever set goals in December only to forget them by February, you're not alone. The problem isn't always motivation; it's that most goals are too vague, too shallow, or completely disconnected from the real issues holding you back. Rather than chasing surface-level growth targets, I encourage you to shift to problem-first thinking. Because while a goal gives you direction, a problem gives you focus. When you start solving the right problems, like poor patient retention, underperforming team systems, or mental burnout, growth becomes targeted, measurable, and sustainable. I also walk through a simple 3-question framework to help you prioritise problems and plan smarter for 2026. This episode is packed with real-world examples and practical strategies you can apply right now. Whether you're looking to improve profitability, marketing clarity, or your own mindset, this approach will help you break the rinse-and-repeat cycle of goal-setting and finally create momentum that lasts. If you're serious about making next year your best yet, this is the episode to start with. No one wants a business coach; however, if you are looking, let's talk.   A business owner I spoke with in early 2024 made an extra $40,000 by following my advice from a 30-minute FREE Zoom call. They were so happy that they bought me a $400 bottle of bourbon. That's a win-win for both of us. Think about it: You have everything to gain and nothing to lose. Please use the link below to schedule your Zoom call.   And, if you're not yet ready to contact me, consider buying one of my books.   ONLINE CALENDAR My Books: 2014 – It's No Secret There's Money in Podiatry  2017 – It's No Secret There's Money in Small Business
Small Changes that Make A Big Impact As podiatrists, we're often guilty of letting the week run us, rather than intentionally designing our schedules to work for us. Patients pile in, admin creeps into every gap, and before we know it, another week (or year) has flown by in a blur. In this solo episode, I discuss why so many podiatry business owners feel overworked and scattered, and how a few small changes can transform your weekly rhythm, energy, and impact. The main culprits behind a chaotic week? Overcommitment – Saying yes to everything, leaving no time to breathe Lack of boundaries – Letting patients, staff, or admin tasks blur personal time Energy mismatches – Doing low-value work when you're mentally at your best The good news? You don't need a total overhaul. Just a few small tweaks. As 2025 winds down, now's the perfect time to pause and ask yourself one powerful question: Why did I get into podiatry in the first place? In this episode of the Podiatry Legends Podcast, I invite you to step back from the day-to-day and reconnect with the deeper why behind your work. Because when your podiatry business starts to feel heavy, uninspired, or off-track, it's rarely a patient problem, staffing issue or business problem; it's usually a purpose problem. Before You Launch Into 2026... If you rush into the new year without reconnecting to your purpose, you'll likely carry the same frustrations forward. This December, take 30 minutes to reflect. Don't just set goals; realign them with your why to make your goals more worthwhile.  Because when you do, work feels lighter. Marketing feels easier. Your team works better. And you start building a clinic and a life that actually energises you. No one wants a business coach; however, if you are looking, let's talk.   A business owner I spoke with in early 2024 made an extra $40,000 by following my advice from a 30-minute FREE Zoom call. Every podiatrist hits a plateau at some point in their career; when growth stalls, motivation dips, and business feels flat. But a plateau isn't failure; it is feedback. In this short solo episode, I share how to shift your mindset, avoid impulsive changes, and use a plateau as an opportunity to reset, refocus, and rebuild momentum. I also explore three types of plateaus, REVENUE, MOTIVATION & TEAM, and offer strategies to overcome each one. If you're ready to move from "stuck" to strategic, this one's for you. This week I'm joined by long-time friend, podiatrist, and business coach Dr Peter Wishnie. Peter and I have known each other for more than a decade, and although we technically work in the same space, we've never competed. Instead, we've worked alongside each other with an abundance mindset because when you understand your strengths, your ideal clients, and your purpose, there's more than enough opportunity to go around. In this episode, we unpack the massive difference between scarcity and abundance, and why so many podiatrists unknowingly sabotage themselves with old beliefs about money, competition, and "not being good enough." We also dive into the concept of the robot brain, and how much of your day is run on autopilot without you realising it. Innovation never comes from the robot, so if you want next year to be different, you'll need to consciously take back control of your thinking. We also explore confidence, delegation, public speaking, personalised marketing, and the danger of generic "mass coaching" funnels that don't understand podiatry. Peter shares insights from 30+ years in practice, plus a sneak peek at his upcoming book, It's Not Your Fault (Unless It Is). If you're ready to think differently about how you practise, lead, and grow, this episode is for you. If you want to connect with Peter, his email is drwishnie@gmail.com, and you can also find him on LinkedIn at Coach Peter Wishnie and on Instagram: @coach_peterwishnie. Healthy Practitioner, Healthy Business: The Future of Podiatry Practice Running a podiatry clinic shouldn't come at the expense of your health, happiness, or home life. Yet far too many practitioners are running on empty, juggling long hours, heavy patient loads, and the constant pressure to keep their businesses afloat. In this week's episode of the Podiatry Legends Podcast, I spoke with Daniel Monteleone, the owner of Proactive Health and Movement in Geelong, Victoria. Daniel's outlook is refreshing: he's built a business model that values wellbeing just as much as revenue, proving that a healthy practitioner really does lead to a healthy business. Check Out My Upcoming Events  Listen in as we unpack Daniel's 25-hour consulting week, his philosophy on mentoring and trust, and how prioritising practitioner health first has fuelled nine years of business growth and team loyalty. This week, we explore how divorce, drink-driving offences, and defamation can cripple a career or clinic if not handled properly, and why most people react far too late. My guest, Tad Nelson, a criminal defence lawyer and "Super Lawyer" from Galveston County, Texas, who brings more than three decades of courtroom experience, plus a master's degree in forensic toxicology, to our conversation. Tad has seen the best and worst of human behaviour, and his insights apply directly to business owners navigating legal, personal, or reputation challenges. Tad explains the importance of acting fast, staying calm, and getting professional help, both legal and PR,  before the fallout damages your brand, income, or family. He also shares his philosophy that a strong reputation isn't repaired after a crisis; it's built long before one happens. This episode is packed with practical advice on staying ahead of legal problems, managing perception in the age of social media, and leading with integrity under pressure. Whether you're a podiatrist, clinic owner, or entrepreneur in any field, you'll take away lessons on communication, humility, and protecting the business you've worked so hard to build. This week, I'm joined again by Dr Patrick McEneaney, DPM from Northern Illinois Foot & Ankle Specialists. Patrick shares how he's grown to 16 clinics by hiring intentionally, tracking the right metrics, and knowing when to consolidate. We talk about the lessons of leadership, the art of delegation, and why cultural alignment is the real key to long-term success. Five Big Takeaways Numbers tell the truth. Always track performance and retention. Hire for attitude, not just skill. You can train techniques, not culture. Growth requires letting go of ego. Make decisions based on data. Consolidation isn't failure; it's refinement. Smart leadership builds scalability, not stress. If you're a younger podiatrist considering business ownership at some stage in the future, see what happens when you trust your gut and take a calculated leap. That's exactly what Ontario Chiropodist (Podiatrist) and owner of Collective Footcare & Orthotics, Ben Wilkinson, did, moving from employee to clinic owner in just a few short years.  In this episode, Ben shares how he rebranded his business twice in less than a year, embraced innovation with 3D printing, and grew a thriving clinic culture built on positivity and professionalism. "The business name is such a big part of the business, but people shouldn't be afraid to change it." - Ben Wilkinson.  It's a must-listen for any podiatrist thinking about ownership, marketing, or how to grow smarter in today's competitive world. This is Part Two of my conversation with Dr Fern Kazlow, clinical psychotherapist, business strategist, and mentor to high achievers, based in New York, USA. In this episode, we explore her Resistance Paradox™, how to understand your own patterns, and why changing your mindset starts with compassion. We go beyond communication and dive deep into resistance, beliefs, and the psychology of change. We discuss how high achievers get stuck, why old patterns hold us back, and how to lead and live with more clarity and connection. If you haven't heard Part One yet, go back and check it out; it sets the stage for this deep, transformative discussion.  "Turn up the discernment, dial down the judgment." - Dr K.  Five Takeaways: What once helped you succeed can now be the very thing holding you back. Understand your resistance—it's the gateway to your next level. Changing beliefs starts with curiosity and compassion. Only a small, focused group can inspire massive change within a profession. "Slay your dragons — don't slay yourself." Self-awareness beats self-attack. Dr Fern Kazlow returns to the podcast, and we dive into the critical role communication plays in building trust with our patients. This is Part One of our conversation, where we focus on how poor communication can damage connections with patients, staff, colleagues, and also family and friends. We also examine the dangers of outsourcing, particularly when it comes to compromising your authenticity, and why connection-powered business is the future. PLEASE, take a look at my UPCOMING EVENTS.  Eight Key Takeaways from (Part One) Poor communication directly decreases trust and weakens patient loyalty. Human connection is more important than ever in a world leaning heavily on automation and AI. Connection-powered business requires presence, listening, and authenticity. Patients can easily tell when communication is outsourced or generic. Editing and creating content yourself helps maintain authenticity and audience respect. Loyalty comes from honest communication, not just good outcomes. Presence in patient interactions is more valuable than perfection. Malpractice claims often stem from poor communication rather than poor outcomes. In this solo episode, I introduce the concept of The Energy Audit, a simple weekly reflection that helps podiatrists identify what fuels them, what drains them, and how to realign their schedule for better focus and motivation. Ending the week mentally flat and emotionally drained is not uncommon, and more often than not, the problem isn't time management. It's energy management. In this episode, you'll discover: The 4 energy zones that shape your week:  recharge activities high-energy work low-level essentials, and energy vampires (the blood suckers) The most common energy traps in every podiatry clinic. From back-to-back patients, toxic, ineffective meetings, to overpromising. Practical ways to restructure your week: time blocking for energy building in proper recharge time delegating low-energy tasks, and protecting creative outlets Why reviewing your week every Friday can prevent burnout and help you stay consistent. This isn't about productivity hacks; it's about making small shifts that lead to big improvements in how you show up at work and at home. If you've been feeling stretched thin, this episode will give you a framework to protect your energy so you can perform at your best as a podiatrist and clinic owner. If you do your first energy audit this week, please send me an email at tf@tysonfranklin.com or tyson@podiatrylegends.com and let me know what changes you're making and how it's impacting your work and life. My guest today is Jonathan Small, and this is his 14th appearance on the Podiatry Legends Podcast, and probably most controvesial. This time, we dive into a bold comparison: podiatry versus dentistry. We discuss why podiatry must stop underselling itself, the dangers of low-cost clinic setups, and how adopting a dental-style model could elevate the profession. From training standards and fees to public perception and professional respect, this episode is a call-to-arms for podiatrists everywhere. If you've ever wondered why dentistry commands higher fees and greater status, tune in as we unpack what podiatry can learn and how we can push the profession forward. We also discussed why there should be a STAR RATING SYSTEM for Podiatry clinics, because we are not all the same, and the public should be made aware of clinics that are a little dodgy.  Please share this episode with your podiatry friends, unless you don't have any.    Don't forget to look at my UPCOMING EVENTS. Finding reliable locum cover has always been one of the toughest challenges for podiatry clinics. In this episode, I speak with Hayley Uden about her groundbreaking app, HeyLucy!, which simplifies the entire process. From automated invoicing and quick payments to flexible opportunities for podiatrists, HeyLucy! is changing how we think about staffing. Tune in to hear how this app could make your professional life easier and more rewarding. Seven Key Takeaways Locuming in podiatry has lacked a centralised, transparent system. HeyLucy! connects clinics and locums directly via an easy‑to‑use app. The app automates invoicing and payroll, reducing admin stress. Locums receive payments immediately after their shifts. Flexible work options support semi‑retired podiatrists, parents coming back into the work force and podiatrists who only want to work part‑time. HeyLucy! allows podiatrists to try different clinics and regions. It's like a try-before-you-buy.  The platform strengthens the profession by mobilising more practitioners. This week's guest is Rebecca Rodger, a podiatrist from Kendal, England, who proves there's no single path to success in our profession. From running a multidisciplinary clinic to working in COVID vaccination, and now shaping global wound care strategies at Convatec, Rebecca has redefined what it means to be a podiatrist. We discuss networking, mentorship, and the value of exploring non-traditional career paths, as well as why evidence-based wound care should be a priority for every podiatrist. ⭐ 5 Standout Takeaways Your podiatry skills are never lost; they serve as your ultimate career safety net. Non-traditional career paths expand the profession's global influence. Evidence-based care must be applied in private practice. Networking beyond podiatry broadens professional horizons. Mentorship accelerates growth and supports the next generation. "You can almost stagnate if you don't go onto the next opportunity." My conversation with Rebecca was both inspiring and practical. She is proof that podiatry can open doors to diverse opportunities far beyond the clinic. Whether it's entrepreneurship, research, corporate health, or global strategy, our profession provides a platform for impact at every level. If you've ever thought about pivoting or exploring non-traditional career paths, Rebecca's story is a reminder that it's possible, and that your podiatry skills will always remain your foundation. Dr. Patrick Agnew joins me for a deep dive into paediatric podiatry and the complexities of treating connective tissue disorders like Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. With over 30 years in practice, Dr. Agnew shares how his early mentorship under Dr. James Ganley shaped his path, and why he believes more podiatrists should embrace niche work, especially with children. "You don't need 90% of your work to be niche—15% can change your career." Today, Dr. Agnew is on the board of the American College of Foot and Ankle Pediatrics. He continues to write, speak, and advocate for greater understanding in this often-overlooked niche. According to Patrick, pediatric podiatry is an area many practitioners fear unnecessarily; mainly because the stakes seem higher and the data is often sparse. That fear is valid. But Patrick encourages curiosity over fear. "There's no competition," he says. In fact, many podiatrists shy away from treating children because of perceived risks, parent pressure, or financial concerns. But for Patrick, those young patients are the most rewarding part of his work. David M Frees returns to the Podiatry Legends Podcast to share a powerful strategic tool borrowed from the military: Red Team, Blue Team, and Purple Team thinking. We discuss how podiatry businesses can use this method to identify vulnerabilities, defend against threats, and uncover growth opportunities – creating a more resilient and profitable practice. Learn more about Dave's Training at Business Black Ops.  9 Key Takeaways from this Episode: The Red Team's job is to identify vulnerabilities and potential attacks on the business. The Blue Team focuses on defending the business and finding growth opportunities. Combining both perspectives creates the Purple Team, where the best ideas are integrated. Podiatry clinics often fail to review the effectiveness of marketing campaigns. Anticipating threats prevents panic when challenges arise. Inversion thinking helps identify what could destroy your business. Opportunities can be just as valuable as threat prevention. Having a facilitator improves the quality of Red/Blue Team sessions. Documenting scenarios and solutions creates a valuable reference for future challenges. If you found this episode helpful, share it with another podiatrist or business owner. And if you'd like guidance on implementing Red Team, Blue Team, Purple Team thinking in your practice, get in touch with me via email at tf@tysonfranklin.com or visit my website tysonfranklin.com.
