Description

We find commercials really interesting, and often hilariously or tragically out of touch, so join us as we nitpick the hell of out the mammoth industry of advertising. Every week on Pop Up, Dillon Wall (filmmaker) and Daniel Lanza Rivers (scholar and critic in cultural studies) watch a commercial, and then put it under the proverbial microscope. The show is often salient, and always entertaining... because for an industry built on knowing what we want, advertising sure gets it wrong a lot.

We're back! Sorry about missing the last release. We're back on track now. This week, we're looking at a 2018 commercial from Sprint, which first premiered during the Super Bowl. Join us as we blow up Sprint's math, unravel mysteries, and suffer through a million crashed Skype calls. Watch the commercial with us! https://youtu.be/XHpEJRsHefM Shoot us an email! Oh, friends. Dear friends. This week we meet Toomgis, the junk food mascot of AM/PM markets. Twizzler hair, hamburger nose, Cheetos beard. This episode is buck wild. On this show, Dillon (film industry director and producer) and Daniel (scholar and critic in cultural studies) watch and analyze commercials. From presidential impeachment and criticism of the surveillance state to cat litter and 90's toys, we always find some interesting lens from which to view ads... but we may have met our match with Toomgis... This week, Daniel and Dillon watch a commercial for Stelara, a pharmaceutical that supposedly combats the symptoms of Crohn's disease. Join us as we talk about the manipulative effects of music and cinematography, the crafting of a narrative designed for people who are suffering, and the internal negotiations that a person with chronic illness has to make daily. And of course, by extension, we examine the hour long list of side effects you always see in these pharma commercials. Follow us on Twitter: @PopUpThePodcast Shoot us an email! Pop Up is your new favorite podcast about commercials. Each episode, a film industry producer (Dillon Wall) and a cultural studies scholar (Daniel Rivers) watch ads and break down the techniques, cultural relevance, and modes of manipulation that are utilized to stick to your brain like a stubborn mold. Join us this week as we dive into a series of PSAs about marijuana, starting with the DUI PSA released in California shortly before recreational use of weed was legalized. We'll also take a look at a couple of classics, including "Your brain on drugs" and the famous ad from the early 2000s at a fast food drive-thru. Join us this week as we watch a PSA promoting recycling. It creates a Pixar-esque story of a lovable character's long journey, and somehow, even though the character is an old plastic bottle (literally a piece of trash), you wind up loving and rooting for the character. We explore the ubiquity of anthropocentric storytelling and problem-solving, how that might recenter conversations around serious problems, and - on the flip side of that argument - how despite that, it may be the smartest marketing technique to promote immediate change. This week, we're solving a mystery! Dillon has been seeing this commercial series for months now, and while the ads are beautiful - with great cinematography and interesting music - somehow the plot still eludes his understanding. Where better to bring a baffling commercial series then to Daniel Rivers and Pop Up? We dive in, and together unravel the mystery of Volvo's "Embrace the Future" campaign. And once we solve it, we have a few things to say about it (which surprises no one). Join us! Join us this week as we go back in time for our first Pop Up Classics episode! Periodically, we look at an old commercial and break it down through a contemporary lens. This week, we're looking at a series of toys from the 1990s called "Mighty Max," an adolescent boy who fights super-villains with the help of some powerful companions. The toys were so successful, they spawned both an animated TV show and an adventure video game. If you want more Pop Up Classics episodes, consider donating to the show on Patreon! We're going to make a bunch of these, but most of them will only be offered to our sustaining members. Even just $1 per month will give you access to all bonus content. Watch Along With Us! "Everyone hates a smelly litter box..." Ain't that the truth? But we love a good litter box commercial. This week we're looking at the revamped "See Something Say Something" campaign out of New York. Originating in 2001 right after 9/11, the MTA and the Department of Homeland Security started this ad campaign to encourage people to report suspicious activity on public transport systems. Specifically, we look at a commercial from the unlikely poster-face of this campaign: Gregg T. from Long Island. Featuring our first ever guest, Vienna Poiesz!
