Activist, artist and podcaster Andrew Pledger joins Jaye on this episode of Potstirrer Podcast to share his compelling story about growing up in Christian fundamentalism and his road to recovery from spiritual abuse. The conversation includes discussion of mental health, religious trauma and abuse, and the role of ultra conservative Christianity in inflicting and enabling trauma. How did a senior art project and an interview with former evangelical author Joshua Harris lead to Andrew's expulsion from conservative Bob Jones University? In this episode, Jaye focuses on a particular argument politicians and pundits make when countries reckon with past and present incidents of national shame, which is that other countries also have shameful incidents in their histories. Jaye discusses why - although the thought experiment is intriguing - the argument itself is deflection which silences the marginalized. She contends that confronting historical and current realities, no matter how difficult or contentious, have individual and collective benefit that are worth the discomfort. In Episode 100, Jaye celebrates the milestone by taking on the topic of cancel culture. Cancel culture is praised by advocates and maligned by critics, but is often ill-defined. Jaye delves into the origin and types of cancel culture, including the deplatforming of celebrities, boycotting of companies, and shaming of private individuals, as responses to statements, policies or behaviors deemed offensive or problematic.  In addition, Jaye calls attention to cancel culture through the censorship of ideas, facts, and knowledge. Censorship in the US is on the rise, including state bans on the teaching of accurate history and civics under the guise of "critical race theory," and book bans in school districts targeting works that champion diversity and tell the stories of people from marginalized communities. What is the ultimate goal of pro-censorship advocates and how do their efforts endanger democracy? This multi-episode series is about efforts to suppress or limit the vote in certain communities across the United States in order to achieve specific outcomes. In Part 3, Jaye talks about the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and the voting rights timeline following the VRA being signed into law. Several methods of voter suppression, from gerrymandering to restrictive voter ID laws, criminal penalties for ballot collection, and more are discussed, as well as potential solutions. Jaye warns of the endgame for voter suppression - minority rule in the face of increased diversity in America. In this episode, Jaye discusses "The Great Resignation," the abnormally high number of American workers voluntarily walking away from work, which has been a constant trend since April 2021. Why are so many workers leaving their jobs or even careers? Jaye dispels the myth of the "lazy unemployed who don't want to work," and points out what most "quitters" are actually doing once they resign. In addition, Jaye talks about vaccine mandates instituted by the public and private sector, and reveals what is truly to blame for the difficult choice many vaccine hesitant people face between taking "the jab" or losing their source of income. Theology professor, author, and African Methodist Episcopal elder Obery M. Hendricks Jr., Ph.D. joins Jaye on this episode of Potstirrer Podcast to discuss his historically rich and theologically informative book Christians Against Christianity: How Right-Wing Evangelicals Are Destroying Our Nation and Our Faith. This enriching conversation includes discussion of the racially conservative roots of right-wing evangelicalism and its effects on Black Americans, the ways in which right-wing evangelical Christians have compromised their own stated aims for the sake of political power, social justice versus "biblical" justice, and more. This multi-episode series is about efforts to suppress or limit the vote in certain communities across the United States in order to achieve specific outcomes. In Part 2, Jaye discusses the history of voting rights in the United States based on sex from the founding until the immediate aftermath of the 19th Amendment, which prohibited the government from restricting women from the ballot box. The woman suffrage movement in the United States, as the defining issue in first wave feminism, was that of both diversity and internal conflict. Jaye discusses the intersection of sex, race and ethnicity, and socioeconomic class in the direction of the woman suffrage movement, and how events at the time led to the movement intentionally sidelining Black women in its quest for the franchise. In this public release of a bonus episode originally released on Patreon in August 2019, Jaye discusses the divorce announcement of Joshua Harris, the author of Christian self-help book I Kissed Dating Goodbye, and his wife, singer Shannon Bonne, and their apparent ongoing deconstruction from evangelical Christianity. Are people who hold harmful beliefs capable of change? Jaye acknowledges her own deconstruction from toxic theology, and reflects on two people who influenced her life journey and departure from evangelical Christianity. These two people, who both passed away in the summer of 2019, were instrumental in setting her on the road to becoming a better human in both heart and mind. The Atlanta spa shootings on March 16, 2021 were one of many large-scale shooting incidents that occurred after a lull in mass gun violence due to the pandemic. But this spree shooting stuck out due to the various issues the tragedy touched on, including gun control and the Second Amendment, stereotyping and discrimination against Asian people, racialized misogyny, policing biases, and toxic teachings within evangelical Christianity. Jaye discusses each of these issues in light of this incident, centering the victims and making the case for an intersectional approach to such horrifying events.  Twitter: @potstirrercast IG: @potstirrerpodcast Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/potstirrerpodcast/ Website: PotstirrerPodcast.com Source Links: https://www.nbcnews.com/news/asian-america/he-shot-everyone-he-saw-atlanta-spa-workers-recount-horrors-n1262928 https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/suspect-deadly-atlanta-area-spa-shootings-says-he-was-motivated-n1261299 https://www.nbcnews.com/news/asian-america/racism-sexism-must-be-considered-atlanta-case-involving-killing-six-n1261347?icid=related https://www.nbcnews.com/news/asian-america/soon-chung-park-worked-long-days-single-mom-bring-5-kids-korea-us-rcna514 https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2021/apr/16/us-police-officers-public-officials-crowdfunding-website-data-breach https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2021/mar/18/atlanta-shootings-victim-delaina-ashley-yaun https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2021/mar/23/yong-ae-yue-atlanta-spa-shootings https://www.history.com/news/black-panthers-gun-control-nra-support-mulford-act https://www.history.com/news/free-school-breakfast-black-panther-party?li_source=LI&li_medium=m2m-rcw-history https://time.com/4431356/nra-gun-control-history/ https://time.com/5948259/atlanta-shooting-victims/ https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2021/03/17/jay-baker-bad-day/ https://www.washingtonpost.com/religion/2021/03/17/atlanta-shooting-southern-baptist-pastors-wrestle/ https://religiondispatches.org/dont-discount-evangelicalism-as-a-factor-in-racist-murder-of-asian-spa-workers-in-georgia/ https://cstroop.com/2018/12/11/ex-evangelical-conversations-professor-of-psychology-joshua-grubbs-featuring-advice-for-exvies-seeking-therapists/ https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2021/03/17/georgia-shootings-eight-people-killed-attacks-spas-atlanta/ https://www.chosun.com/international/us/2021/03/17/XSDXYLMAQZCC5JWMQ4HGRZGOG4/ https://www.kxan.com/news/atlanta-shootings-put-spotlight-on-surging-anti-asian-sentiment-in-america/ https://www.teenvogue.com/story/anti-asian-hate-crimes-violence-us-history https://newlife.com/emb/bounce-your-eyes/ https://newsone.com/4114669/atlanta-spa-shooting-survivor-speaks-out/ https://www.vox.com/22338807/asian-fetish-racism-atlanta-shooting https://www.wbur.org/hereandnow/2021/03/22/objectifying-asian-women-racism https://www.stanforddaily.com/2021/03/29/experts-say-atlanta-shooting-reflects-the-fetishization-of-asian-women/ https://www.freep.com/story/news/local/michigan/detroit/2021/03/21/paul-michels-georgia-spa-shootings/4792531001/ https://abcnews.go.com/US/atlanta-shooting-victims-family-grieves-afar-strangers-organize/story?id=76883538 https://www.wsj.com/articles/last-spa-shooting-funeral-planned-by-chinese-american-community-11617537601 https://www.ajc.com/news/breaking-officials-release-names-of-4-women-killed-in-atlanta-spa-shootings/UJR22SSUQZE2JHB7EFWRT6DUZI/ https://people.com/crime/son-of-atlanta-shooting-victim-hyun-jung-grant-recalls-their-last-moment-together/ https://www.thedailybeast.com/atlanta-massage-parlor-shooting-victim-sun-cha-kim-remembered-as-a-fighter https://www.nytimes.com/2021/03/19/us/atlanta-shooting-victims.html http://sk.sagepub.com/reference/violentcrime/n255.xml https://digitalcommons.wcl.american.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1164&context=tma https://animemotivation.com/anime-fetishization-weebs-japan/ https://www.vice.com/en/article/qjpymm/the-alleged-atlanta-shooters-church-tried-to-disappear-from-the-internet https://www.crabapplefbc.org/ https://www.newyorker.com/news/us-journal/two-georgia-churches-grapple-with-the-shootings-in-atlanta Music: Potstirrer Podcast Theme composed by Jon Biegen from Stranger Still http://strangerstillshow.com/ http://jonathanbiegen.com Magic composed by Johny Grimes https://soundcloud.com/johny-grimes Creative Commons — Attribution 3.0 Unported — CC BY 3.0 Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/31WXS2t Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/rsz_WNXpTYc Scream composed by ELANSARIX Creative Commons — https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/ Download Free: https://elansarix.fanlink.to/scream Intractable composed by Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Rain and Tears composed by Neutrin05 https://soundcloud.com/neutrin05 Creative Commons — Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported — CC BY-SA 3.0 Free Download / Stream: http://bit.ly/2PKvY28 Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/RRsQBq9nSXQ Villanous Treachery composed by Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Sad Music Sound Effect composed by Scott Buckley www.scottbuckley.com.au YouTube - bit.ly/2xeSz0l Music promoted by no copyright music store https://youtu.be/UrCRjIXrd7Y

It is the middle of President Joe Biden's first 100 days in office, and his administration has been hard at work attempting to end the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States, as well as other policy priorities. But actions on immigration-related policy, as it relates to a shift in direction from Donald Trump, have been more modest. Jaye discusses Biden's ending of the Muslim Travel Ban and the lifting of restrictions for allowing unaccompanied minors into the US, among other immigration policies.
