Author Mitchell Kesller joins Jaye for a meaningful conversation about his debut book, Broke the Bread, Spilled the Tea. Broke the Bread, Spilled the Tea seeks to bridge the gap between Christian faith and LGBTQ+ identity, making the case that there is much more to faith in Christ than what is often preached on Sunday mornings. This fascinating, in-depth discussion touches on the harm done to the LGBTQ+ community by the American church, apologetics, the politicization of conservative Christianity, separation of church and state, the search for a deeper understanding of God and the Bible, and more. In a public release of this bonus episode originally released on Patreon in November 2019, Jaye talks more urban legends by discussing a couple of processed food-related legends. Is McDonalds adding animal byproducts and other gross fillers to their hamburgers? Are popular meat substitutes such as Beyond Burger and the Impossible Burger "indistinguishable" from dog food? Jaye also provides a bit of historical context for Americans' distrust of corporations involved in food processing, which often drives food-related urban legends. In this episode of Potstirrer Podcast, Jaye reacts to the leaked draft US Supreme Court Opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization. Written by Justice Samuel Alito, the draft majority opinion signals an overturning of the Roe v. Wade precedent regarding abortion, and would leave abortion rights up to the states. Jaye argues that Alito's reasoning in Dobbs for overturning Roe is particularly alarming, as the way Roe was decided is similar to that of several other civil rights cases handed down by the Court over the past seventy years. Using historical analysis, Jaye makes the case that overturning Roe v. Wade was always meant to be a starting point in a right-wing quest to roll back a host of civil rights and liberties, and ultimately solidify authoritarian minority rule in the United States. CONTENT WARNING: This episode contains content discussing explicit sexuality, sexual assault and harassment, violence, and suicide. Listener discretion is advised. In this public release of a Patreon bonus episode originally released in November 2018, Jaye goes back in time to tell the story of the impeachment of President Bill Clinton in 1998, and the scandals that led up to it. Clinton - and many of his supporters - believe that he was unfairly targeted by congressional Republicans for a consensual affair with a White House intern. But was that the case? And was Clinton's affair with Monica Lewinsky simply a "private" matter, an example of immorality unbecoming of the commander-in-chief, or perhaps something else? Activist, artist and podcaster Andrew Pledger joins Jaye on this episode of Potstirrer Podcast to share his compelling story about growing up in Christian fundamentalism and his road to recovery from spiritual abuse. The conversation includes discussion of mental health, religious trauma and abuse, and the role of ultra conservative Christianity in inflicting and enabling trauma. In this episode, Jaye focuses on a particular argument politicians and pundits make when countries reckon with past and present incidents of national shame, which is that other countries also have shameful incidents in their histories. Jaye discusses why - although the thought experiment is intriguing - the argument itself is deflection which silences the marginalized. She contends that confronting historical and current realities, no matter how difficult or contentious, have individual and collective benefit that are worth the discomfort. In Episode 100, Jaye celebrates the milestone by taking on the topic of cancel culture. Cancel culture is praised by advocates and maligned by critics, but is often ill-defined. Jaye delves into the origin and types of cancel culture, including the deplatforming of celebrities, boycotting of companies, and shaming of private individuals, as responses to statements, policies or behaviors deemed offensive or problematic.  In addition, Jaye calls attention to cancel culture through the censorship of ideas, facts, and knowledge. Censorship in the US is on the rise, including state bans on the teaching of accurate history and civics under the guise of "critical race theory," and book bans in school districts targeting works that champion diversity and tell the stories of people from marginalized communities. What is the ultimate goal of pro-censorship advocates and how do their efforts endanger democracy? This multi-episode series is about efforts to suppress or limit the vote in certain communities across the United States in order to achieve specific outcomes. In Part 3, Jaye talks about the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and the voting rights timeline following the VRA being signed into law. Several methods of voter suppression, from gerrymandering to restrictive voter ID laws, criminal penalties for ballot collection, and more are discussed, as well as potential solutions. Jaye warns of the endgame for voter suppression - minority rule in the face of increased diversity in America. In this episode, Jaye discusses "The Great Resignation," the abnormally high number of American workers voluntarily walking away from work, which has been a constant trend since April 2021. Why are so many workers leaving their jobs or even careers? Jaye dispels the myth of the "lazy unemployed who don't want to work," and points out what most "quitters" are actually doing once they resign. In addition, Jaye talks about vaccine mandates instituted by the public and private sector, and reveals what is truly to blame for the difficult choice many vaccine hesitant people face between taking "the jab" or losing their source of income. Theology professor, author, and African Methodist Episcopal elder Obery M. Hendricks Jr., Ph.D. joins Jaye on this episode of Potstirrer Podcast to discuss his historically rich and theologically informative book Christians Against Christianity: How Right-Wing Evangelicals Are Destroying Our Nation and Our Faith. This enriching conversation includes discussion of the racially conservative roots of right-wing evangelicalism and its effects on Black Americans, the ways in which right-wing evangelical Christians have compromised their own stated aims for the sake of political power, social justice versus "biblical" justice, and more. This multi-episode series is about efforts to suppress or limit the vote in certain communities across the United States in order to achieve specific outcomes. In Part 2, Jaye discusses the history of voting rights in the United States based on sex from the founding until the immediate aftermath of the 19th Amendment, which prohibited the government from restricting women from the ballot box. The woman suffrage movement in the United States, as the defining issue in first wave feminism, was that of both diversity and internal conflict. Jaye discusses the intersection of sex, race and ethnicity, and socioeconomic class in the direction of the woman suffrage movement, and how events at the time led to the movement intentionally sidelining Black women in its quest for the franchise.
