The internet went crazy today when a rumor seemed to break through about the always-destined Harry Potter television show — specifically that while no series is actually in the works, WB is now officially shopping for writers and pitches for an HBO Max event. We did a quick-and-dirty reaction pod with our three hosts and our good friend Proma Khosla, a longtime LeakyCon staffer and Mashable entertainment reporter, to break down the news, what it means for the franchise, and what the fandom does now.  Basically, we decided the fandom just needs to get a trillion dollars together and buy the franchise from JKR.  You can follow Proma on Twitter at @promawhatup  and read her Mashable articles here! ~*~ Don't forget to follow us on @pottercast on Twitter and @pottercastpod on Instagram! When your 2020 wrapped congratulates you on all four episodes of content you produced this year, it must be PotterCast! Welcome to season 16, in which we are, we swear, on the edge of actually producing this thing at a normal clip. See how it's going to start to work in this episode in which we introduce a few new segments — a bit of opening chatter (including an IN-Depp conversation as Frankie puts it) with your gang, then two new segments: POTTER PONDERINGS (in this episode, we wonder what it takes to make a Hufflepuff go dark) and HEY NETFLIX (in which we pitch spinoff shows about the Potter universe — today, what would we want from a show about the Ministry of Magic?). Welcome to a very special episode of PotterCast! This week, J.K. Rowling angered and saddened many fans when she came out in support of a woman whose company had not renewed her employment contract because she refused to recognize the legally protected rights of trans people. In coming back from a months-long Twitter hiatus, J.K. Rowling mischaracterized the facts of the case in support of a dangerous and unscientific movement that invalidates the trans experience, and in doing so flies in the face of medical consensus worldwide. Her comments also confused a lot of fans who are not fully familiar with the issues at stake, or cannot understand how someone whose book series is so vehemently about tolerance can express support for a woman whose views invalidate so many people's existences. That's why in this episode, we are going over it all. Jackson Bird, longtime friend of the podcast and of Leaky, as well as author, trans activist and educator, and expert Waffler, joins us to explain and process what this means for Harry Potter fans. We discuss: What actually happened What J.K. Rowling said versus what happened to the woman in question, Maya Forstater Why many fans saw this coming What to do now that the creator of the series we love so dearly has taken this stance How to support trans and non-binary communities How we as fans are feeling about all of this What to do now, especially since we still love this community We hope you'll listen and share. Here are some helpful resources, including things we mention in the show: Jack's book! SORTED: Growing up, coming out, and finding my place A list of information from medical communities around the world validating that trans and non-binary people exist GLAAD's transgender media program has great resources, FAQs, ways to take action, and ways to learn Transstudent.org has more Information regarding sex and gender GONADS, the great series by RadioLab News articles regarding this incident: The Cut Vox (on British culture and the "gender critical" movement) The Mary Sue News articles regarding past incidents that have also upset the community: The Mary Sue on Johnny Depp and the Crimes of Grindelwald Past indicators that J.K. Rowling was following trans-exclusionary ideologies The Guardian on J.K. In this episode, Frak, John, and Melissa do what they had not yet done together as hosts and friends: discuss and unpack J.K. Rowling's harmful rhetoric regarding transgender people. We strongly encourage you to listen to 15.2: Sorting It Out, the episode we released right after her tweet in December, for information and facts on why what she is doing is so difficult to parse.  Here is a link to the twitter thread we referenced debunking JKR’s statements: https://twitter.com/carter_andrewj/status/1270787941275762689?s=21 We also touch on the future of the show, and the state of things in the pool. (You'll get it when you listen.)  PotterCast is hoping to recommit to what it did much more in the early days when we didn't all have other jobs: highlighting a wider expanse of fandom, creation, and fun. So sad 😢 that you guys are so afraid to talk about reality. So sad you are living in the world of make believe. So sad that you are guys are afraid to see a honest take of a honest wizardly take of what actually happened in WWII. So sad that you willing decided to turn your backs on JK Rowling to the rabid wolves that are trying to rip out her throat. Way to stand up as the Dumbledore Army.

LMAO JK Rowling in her essay: IM NOT A VICTIM Eveyrone: Stop saying you're a victim. You're not. um ok. Also she literally says that she sees the trans women she knows as women but I guess it's really really important to you Americans to simplify a very complex issue in Britain and scream TRANSPHOBIA.

Was hard watching JKR masking off like this. Always wonder if my parents had to watch their heroes disappoint like this. Trans men are men, trans women are women, people just wanna pee, respect people's pronouns and be excellent to each other.

Slightly disappointed in the amount of research that went into the discussion of fantastic beasts part 2. One of the biggest apparent plot holes is McGonagall's age and whether she could be a professor, and it seems that several of the podcasters didn't even look into the cannon in advance and didn't understand why it wouldn't make sense for her to be there. Was hoping for a deeper dive into the movie.

Can I just add that the lemon drop password situation doesn't happen for like 11 years so maybe Dumbledore has just discovered them in that first chapter (so McGonagall wouldn't have heard of them then) and then develops his obsession through the year, in which time I'm sure McGonagall would have become well aware of lemon drops.

Every week Melissa, John, and Sue report the latest Harry Potter news. This includes interviews with new people such as the editor of the American version of the Harry Potter books, actors in the Harry Potter movies, as well as with dedicated fans. Every episode they answer their fans' burning questions and share their theories about what is to come in the 7th HP book and the upcoming movies. They are well associated to the Harry Potter franchise giving them opprtunities to go where many of us only dream of going and they report back to their audience wih very satisfactory results and details. Their podcasts are not only entertaining, but they shine lights on very important Harry Potter information that has been over looked by many. A pure delight to sit back and listen to! Cheers to Pottercast! And may their be many more Pottercasts to come!

I'm a fifty-something and I just love Pottercast - I find it both informative and quite a hoot! Bring on more filk casts! I am amazed at the creativity of this audience. I also like how the standard podcasts are divided into recurring segments so I know what to expect. Having interviews with the people involved with the films are just awesome and nicely complements the news from the Leaky Cauldron web site. Finally, I am impressed and appreciate the professionalism of the hosts, (and that includes you too John Noe, at least most of the time!), the modcasts, fan interviews, et al, which greatly enhances the quality of the podcast! Melissa, I don't know how you find the time to do all that you do and Sue, you're the squee-iest!

Besides my love for the Harry Potter books and films, I would listen to this podcast just to hear the hilarious stylings of John Noe. He definitely needs his own TV show. But I love this podcast because it suits the older HP fans a bit better than others and you can tell that they put more effort into organization and quality.
