Description

Education today can be difficult and draining and amazing and fulfilling and so many things all wrapped into one. The dynamics of what we do can leave us needing every ounce of inspiration and motivation we can get. I have been a principal and educator for over 25 years, and I find my motivation and inspiration in many different places. As a principal I often find it my job to inspire and motivate and energize the team around me. I have to be the principle inspiration in my school. But what things inspire me as a principal. Welcome to Principal Inspiration, a podcast for educators. These are the people, stories, anecdotes, observations, conversations, and thoughts that are my principle inspiration on any given day. My sincere hope in sharing is that you might be inspired as well. I hope this podcast leaves you feeling energized, challenged, and ready to go be awesome! Our students deserve nothing less.

The Deadliest Sin

The Deadliest Sin

Pride... Dangerous? It can be. But it can also be a powerful tool.
If you want to change the world, start by making your bed! Maybe you've heard Admiral William McRaven's speech (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3sK3wJAxGfs) where he talks about how making your bed each day can help you change the world. How starting the day with a simple routine helps you begin to accomplish all the bigger tasks in the day. How do you start your day as a principal? What routines do you do or do you have your team doing that set the day in motion...
I don't know if it is snowing where you are right now, but it is here. And I am pretty sure every kid in my district is looking out the window with fingers crossed hoping for a SNOWDAY! Do you remember snow days? Were you fortunate enough to grow up in an area that occasionally had enough snow that schools had to shut down for a day... and you as a kid suddenly had a day of nothing to do?!? Now we have eLearning Days and Virtual Days and even if it snows it is mo...
Ya Loser!

Ya Loser!

2021-01-2125:53

I honestly believe we have got to start teaching our students to be better losers... that's right... better losers! We do everything to promote winning, but little to learn to be a better loser. There isn't anything wrong with good solid competition. But when we complete, do we help our students understand that it isn't just win or lose it's how you played the game that matters, but rather... It's how you win or how you lose when you play the game that matters.
This time of the year is full of traditions. For me, I am a Christmas nut. I LOVE traditions. I look forward to the music, and decorations, and food... Traditions can be powerful in connecting us and making us feel a part of the family. Do you have traditions built into your school program? Things that connect your students to the school program and school family? They can be powerful tools!
How do you refresh? We talk a lot about the social and emotional wellbeing of students. Are you taking care of your own?

Mom's Meatloaf

I am fairly certain that meatloaf is made differently in every household in America. They all look different, but they are all meatloaf and each has some key ingredients. A good well-rounded school program is the same. They don't all look the same, but good programs have key ingredients that make them successful. In this episode, I will be sharing a successful framework for a schoolwide social-emotional program. P2R2 is a formula, or recipe if you will. Th...

The Bear

Do you have those days when you are walking down that hall and you've assumed that look... you know the one... the look that says, "Talk to me at your own risk, stop me and I will end you, I am the Bear!" Well maybe that's just me. Too often I have the Bear look going and well... I certainly don't want that to be what's catching at my school.
Have you ever had that dream... you know that one... where you have forgotten something, a homework assignment maybe, or your pants!? For 30 years I've had that feeling, and it stems from a class in high school, Tom Clark's Shakespeare class. Mr. Clark was an excellent teacher, and his impact on my life was much bigger than he may ever know. Why? Well it all has to do with a Lollipop moment.

Labor Day

Labor Day. That odd little holiday that for me has always signaled the end of summer and soon to come fall activities. But what does Labor Day really celebrate? Well, Labor Day officially constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. Simply put, Labor Day celebrates our labor, our work, those things that we do everyday to make our community better. So, thinking about Labor Day,...

Episode 1 - My Voice

Meet Mr. Bass an elementary music teacher who took the time to support me as a student in a rather unique way. He helped me with my voice... quite literally. Isn't that a primary responsibility of each of us as educators. To help each student with their voice. To help them recognize they have a voice and that voice is important in the world. One incredible educator just recently inspired me to use my voice. John Spencer in a podcast titled "The World Needs ...
