Welcome to class! Problem Posing is a podcast about public education in New York State in the format of a lesson hosted by Christina Cover, a public school Special Education teacher.

Inspired by Paulo Freire’s ”Pedagogy of the Oppressed”, the podcast will provide listeners with basic information about school in New York, from the past and the present, that can help listeners more actively ask questions about education in their own lives.

In this class, Neil and Christina discuss special education: what it is, the different ways that students with disabilities learn in schools, IEPs and IEP meetings, and the rights students with disabilities and their families have. We then discuss things that are not often talked about enough in special education.

In this class, we talk about some of the standardized tests that students in New York City and New York State take and discuss reasons why people say they are important as well as common criticisms of the tests. We practice thinking critically about our experiences with the tests, how we might reimagine what testing looks like, and the challenges that might be involved in changing the way the testing system works.
In this class, we discuss school governance structures in New York City and New York state and talk about who students would go to if they wanted to advocate for change to school cell phone policies, metal detectors in schools, and the start time of school days.
