Description

The Profiling Evil Podcast delves into unsolved criminal cases from around the world. We look into the mind of the predator and talk about crime motivation, victim selection and behavior. Some episodes examine how investigators work and how they capitalize on mistakes made by the offender.

Your host, Mike King, retired after a distinguished law enforcement career where he served as Chief of Staff to Utah Attorney General Jan Graham and Weber County Attorney Reed M. Richards. He learned policing in the Ogden Utah Police Department where he served in patrol, traffic (motors) enforcement and SWAT. As an investigator, he led task forces and pursued serial predators throughout his career.

He served as co-chair of the FBI’s ViCAP (Violent Criminal Apprehension Program) National Advisory Board and as Director of UTAP, the Utah Criminal Tracking and Analysis Project. During the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, he worked in the intelligence section.

After retirement from public service, he went to work at Environmental Systems Research Institute where he consulted with law enforcement around the world on intelligence gathering, real-time crime reporting and major event management. He retired in 2024 to pursue Profiling Evil fulltime.

He was trusted. He was respected. He was a monster hiding in plain sight. For 16 years, Charles Cullen worked as a nurse in hospitals across America, all while committing one of the worst serial killing sprees in history. He moved from hospital to hospital, leaving a staggering body count in his wake, and every institution that suspected him let him walk away—until one brave nurse-turned-whistleblower helped bring him down. How did Cullen get away with murder for so long? Why didn’t hospitals...
She was a law student, a mother, and by all appearances, the picture of composure — but behind the charm, investigators say Ana Paula Veloso Fernandes was orchestrating a trail of death across São Paulo. Let’s jump behind the headlines and into the psychology of female serial killers, exploring why women who kill often use deception, poison, and trust itself as their weapons. Police say Fernandes first tested her poison on dogs, then turned it on her friends, lovers, and even her landlord who...
In today’s sentencing hearing, Donna Adelson delivered a dramatic, emotional statement asserting her innocence in the 2014 murder of her former son-in-law, FSU law professor Dan Markel. Let’s break down what she said and contrast it with what the state proved at trial. Then, see how the judge responded to her performance, particularly criticizing the theatrics and lack of genuine remorse. #DonnaAdelson #DanMarkel #TrueCrime #MurderForHire #ProfilingEvil #CourtroomDrama #SentencingHearin...
Chad Daybell is publishing “uncensored” letters from death row, recasting himself as a misunderstood, faithful father who loved Tammy and was framed by the media. Lori Daybell is doubling down from prison with a different kind of sermon, claiming she’s exactly where “her God” wants her to be, ministering to women behind bars. Neither convicted killer confronts the evidence, things like how they were carrying on in an affair while conspiring to murder. Tammy Daybell was dead and within weeks, ...
When a man convicted of murdering his wife and his lover’s two children begins writing ghost stories from his prison cell, you’d think the world might respond with silence. But Chad Daybell , the Idaho gravedigger, self-styled prophet, and now, Death Row inmate, has found a new platform. Through a website managed by his daughter, he’s publishing “Letters from Chad,” little episodes designed to sound like spiritual memoirs, part haunting, part homily, part book plug. Letter #7 is a sprawling t...
Colby Ryan has carried a burden most of us can’t imagine. He lost his siblings, Tylee and JJ, to murder, and watched the justice system hold his mother, Lori Vallow Daybell, and her new husband, Chad Daybell, accountable. His stepfather, Charles Vallow, was also murdered, and the ripple of violence extended into the life of Brandon Boudreaux. In this powerful conversation, Colby opens up about Chad Daybell’s letters from Death Row, Lori’s manipulative rhetoric, and the dangerous leadership pa...
Chad Daybell’s Letter #6 is all about image repair and another near death experience. He walks us from a normal newsroom job into his 2nd NDE, a dramatic near-death experience at La Jolla Cove that ultimately lands squarely in a cemetery sexton role that fits his afterlife branding like a glove. Let’s decode the storytelling tricks of how an ocean wave becomes a divine assignment… how a “grandpa appearing in robes” turns into authority, and how the cemetery isn’t just a job but a stage for sp...
Letter #5 is Chad Daybell seizing the microphone. He promises a “foundation of facts,” blames the State for twisting his beliefs, accuses his own attorney of missing cross-examination opportunities, and then pivots to four claimed near-death experiences as the key to making “2019 finally make sense.” Let’s expose the psychological choreography: externalizing blame, elevating theology to evidentiary status, laundering credibility with vivid sensory detail, and using serial “teases” to control ...
Letter #4 isn’t a confession—it’s a stage play and Chad Daybell reaches for the biggest levers of moral authority in Latter-day Saint culture—mission stories, lifelong service, and the language of persecution. Don’t be confused though, it’s all done to sell his spiritual rebrand from Death Row. Let’s expose the psychological choreography behind it: origin story as moral title, social proof disguised as gratitude, excommunication reframed as victimhood, and grandiose claims of “increased pries...
Chad Daybell’s Letter #3 paints a cozy picture of rural Idaho—Salem farms, Indian Runner ducks, family business wins, and a string of fainting spells that conveniently suggest a “natural” decline. But when you put that Hallmark reel next to the forensic record of Tammy Daybell’s death and the convictions tied to this case, the manipulation snaps into focus. We’re going to tear this letter apart line by line and expose Chad Daybell’s psychological playbook. He weaponizes specificity to fake cr...
What happens when a convicted killer uses nostalgia and romance to stage-manage his legacy from Death Row? In Letter #2, Chad Daybell devotes page after page to Tammy Daybell—his wife of nearly 30 years, a mother of five, and, tragically, his murder victim. He paints her as radiant, saintly, and strong woman while weaving a love story full of concerts, family memories, and business success. But what’s missing speaks louder than what’s included. The “Tammy Letter” leaves me even more empty tha...
What do you get when a convicted killer tries to stage-manage his legacy from Death Row? Chad Daybell’s new prison letters are less a private outpouring and more a calculated rebranding—religious framing, family testimony, nostalgic anecdotes, and the promise of “more” to come. In this episode we pull the curtain back on those letters and trace the psychological playbook: narcissistic supply, image control, and the strategic seeding of an appeals narrative. We’ll map the players—Chad Daybell ...
The Utah County Attorney held a powerful press conference today, announcing capital charges against Tyler James Robinson, the alleged killer of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Prosecutors revealed chilling details of the September 10th sniper-style attack at Utah Valley University, describing not only the calculated nature of the murder but also the disturbing psychological and behavioral indicators of premeditation. Let’s break down the legal charges, the prosecution’s notice of intent t...
Three years after Suzanne Morphew vanished on Mother’s Day 2020, her remains were discovered in a shallow grave in Saguache County, Colorado. Forensic tests revealed a rare tranquilizer in her system and prosecutor’s say only one non-governmental person (her husband, Barry Morphew), had access to the concoction. Now he stands indicted once again, accused of killing the mother of two, and moving her body multiple times before fleeing to Arizona under an alias. Let’s look at the State’s new evi...

Most remember the chilling phrase “#DingoAteMyBaby,” but behind it lies decades of #legalbattles, #forensicerrors, and #mediahysteria that almost destroyed an innocent family. With the State rested, Donna Adelson’s defense will now try to reframe her as a desperate mother, not a criminal mastermind. But the evidence—from coded wiretaps to her attempted flight to Vietnam—doesn’t vanish without explanation. That’s why Donna is almost certain to take the stand. She’ll have to explain the “script” she wrote for a fellow inmate, deny jailhouse confessions, and convince jurors that her words were emotional, not conspiratorial. It’s a high-stakes gamble: stay silent and l...
Dive into the heartbreaking case of 8-month-old Emmanuel Haro, who vanished from a Yucaipa parking lot on August 14, 2025, or did he? This case has sparked a massive investigation. Initially reported as an abduction by his mother, Rebecca Haro, the story unraveled as inconsistencies piled up, leading to the arrest of both parents, Rebecca and Jake Haro, on murder charges. With Jake’s history of child cruelty and a search of their California home revealing potential evidence, the case took a g...
Katherine Magbanua’s testimony in the Donna Adelson trial is one of the most fascinating moments in the long fight for justice in the murder of Dan Markel. In this short video, I’ll walk through how MAWG-BANA-WUA functioned as a “middle-man” between Charlie Adelson and the killers — and how that mirrors the role prosecutors say Donna Adelson played in orchestrating the plot. You’ll hear a couple of her own words from the stand, and we’ll unpack why the prosecution’s decision to put her on the...
Day 1 of the Donna Adelson murder trial in Florida opened the door into the plot that took the life of law professor Dan Markel. In this video, we break down every witness, from neighbor #JamesGeiger who first spotted the #Prius, to retired Sgt. #DavidSims who shut off Dan’s car, to the crime scene technician who discovered cash still in the glove box, to the investigator who tied a distinctive Prius to the timeline, and finally to insider #LuisRivera, who admitted he drove while #SigfredoGar...
The shocking murder of Florida State law professor Dan Markel in 2014 has haunted Tallahassee for over a decade. Now, the spotlight is on Donna Adelson, the Adelson family matriarch, accused of orchestrating the murder-for-hire plot that left two young boys without their father. Let’s break down the prosecution’s opening statement against Donna Adelson and see what their case really is. This might be the perfect example of power, dominion and control when this alleged wolf in sheep’s clothing...

Just like the Mormon faith, it’s a cult that does not serve God or Jesus, they don’t commit these crimes out loud, but let’s be abundantly clear, Mormonism is a cult.
