How to holiday? In English Canada the holiday at the end of May is to celebrate Queen Victoria who presided over the Empire, upon which the sun never set and to which Canada contributed soldiers and war material. But in Quebec there is another story and sentiment. National Patriots Day is marked to remember those who fought for democracy and independence in the 1837 Rebellion. Speeches are given at statues of the rebel leaders. Robin Philpot explains why we have “solitudes” in our ceremonies and what it tells us about Canada/Quebec today.
