On a cold March night in 1980, two boys, aged 14 and 5 stood outside a Ukiah police station, deciding what to do next. Local police were in the middle of a frenzied investigation into the recent abduction of 5-year-old Timmy White. This is the second part of In the Shadow of Yosemite. If you haven't listened to Part 1, go and do that now.In March 1999, the brutal triple murders of a woman and two teenage girls rocked the small towns dotted throughout the Sierra Nevada foothills in California. The previous month, the Yosemite Valley had become the scene of a massive search and rescue operation, where hundreds of volunteers, police and friends and family searched for any sign of Carole and Juli Sund and their companion, Silvina Pelosso. Within two weeks, their case was upgraded from missing to presumed murdered. By the end of March, authorities had recovered all three bodies, and an FBI-led task force was assembled to catch those responsible. Authorities had several strong suspects in custody and were moving forward with charges, confident that they had the guilty parties behind bars. It would take another gruesome death for them to refocus their attention on the actual perpetrator. That man was Cary Stayner.Propensity is a true crime anthology podcast. As the 19th of February 1979 approached, the loyal disciples of the Ant Hill Kids cult anxiously awaited the end of the world. From their remote commune in Eastern Québec, their messiah, Roch Thériault or Moses, as he called himself, preached of fire and brimstone. He told them that he alone could provide salvation from the coming apocalypse. Only it wasn’t salvation he offered his followers, but cruelty and systematic dehumanisation. As each year passed, he became more and more unhinged and inflicted unbelievable violence on those around him. This is the story of the Ant Hill Kids Cult.
