Many of us would be so fortunate to know our next guest, Jon "Zub" Owens. Zub is the founder and CEO of BAA. The work that Zub and his team does in and around Philadelphia is remarkable. BAA is in it's 10th year and from the start the idea was to give youth a basketball platform and a opportunity to showcase their talents in leagues and tournaments. Coach Zub's focus is clear, he wants to continue to save lives and keep the legacy moving forward. This episode Coach Mike invited his niece Ali Johns to the studio to see if she would be interested in becoming his new audio recording engineer. While in the studio, he asked her a few questions about her high school basketball career. Then Coach Mike allowed his two son's, Noah and Jabril to play with the microphones and the Rodecaster pro mixing board as they try their hands at podcasting. Get ready for tons of blooper moments filled with authentic technical flops. It was a fun experience for everyone. We know how passionate and emotional we can get when we have to sit and watch our kid's games and watch bad coaching or bad referring. Some parents are well mannered and then you have the ones who are out of control. On today's show Coach Mike is joined by Coach Eric Winters, Coach Clyde Hawthorne III and Barkim Benjamin, AKA Mook. They provided their perspectives on this issue. Each coach reference their experiences and how they managed to navigate both as a coach and aa a parent. Coach Mike and his friend, Coach Eric debate whether Jalen Hurt can be the long term Quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles.
Dr. Denise Erskine aka Dr. Deneze is a college professor at the University of Maryland Global Campus. We invited her on this episode to help us understand her life work as a Speech Coach and to talk about her book, "White Teachers/Black Students", Culturally Responsive Pedagogy in the College Classroom. Her book is available on Amazon.com. Check out Dr. Denise on her youtube page at (https://youtube.com/channel/UCi6xY8XB1TIEOyirvltlFcQ)
In this episode I invited coaches to talk about the transgender athlete and how coaches are managing and viewing the topic in their programs and how it could impact their players and the parents of those players. After this episode, it was clear that we need a part two.
On our show today, we punted the ball in a different direction. We invited a long time friend, Mrs. Thurayya Berry-Petteway. She is a more than just a "Hockey Mom". She is also a School Psychologist certified to practice in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. She has been responsible for the coordination and delivery of school based psychological services, which included performing functional behavioral assessments, IEP's and Psychological assessments. We recognize that anxiety and boredom is high during this time for our athletes and coaches so we invited Ms. Berry-Petteway to the show because we thought she could provide some insight for our parents, coaches and athletes on how to cope and push forward during our Covid-19 isolation at home. We also talked about her son's experience playing hockey in Philadelphia. We finally touch on her work at the Chester High School and the consistent trauma her students are facing. He is a young coach in the CIAA conference NCAA Division II and after this interview, you will see that he is a very mature and focused young man with an absolute purpose. This being our first interview, I think we did a pretty good job, especially with the technical challenges we are dealing with due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This is the 5th episode and we are still here with the same magnificent cast. Today the Coaches are asking the question, 'WHAT IS A LEGEND' ? This word is tossed around on playgrounds, in sports bars, in barbershops and at the holiday dinner table. As subjective as the argument is, how many of us can really say we know how to classify and apply the tittle of Legend? I wanted to start the conversation and let the coaches break it down for you. We will also be benching some people and putting some in the game. If you listen long enough you'll hear Coach Nelson introduce his new project where he plans to highlight the "UNSIGNED ATHLETE" in order create college opportunities for them. We all get excited at sporting events. No one gets more excited than the parents, especially when they are devoted to their child's success. Often some of these parents will cross the line and step into the coaching box and find themselves on the sideline yelling out to their child and causing confusion. Today, Coach Mike is joined in the studio by a few coaching buddies as they dive into this issue and later offer their insights and expert opinions. In this episode, you will hear a excerpt from Coach Frank Martin from the University of South Carolina.
