Letting Kelis tell her own story is always the best idea. Just like her musical persona suggests, she tells it like it is. The Harlem-native captivated us when her bright, curly hair and loud screaming appeared on BET in her debut video “Caught Out There,” and our adulation never stopped. Truthfully, we’d discussed doing an official Kelis show many times, and it sounds like now is the time. Join DJ Sir Daniel and Jay Ray as they recount the career of the maverick culture shifter. As hip-hop stars have attained more fame and notoriety, many have made humanitarianism part of their brand. In a feel-good story this week, The Weeknd flew a 6 year old fan to his Philadelphia show after a Toronto cancellation. A gracious act that the child’s father remarked “I wouldn’t be able to put this last week into words if I tried.” On this show we’re going to explore the fun history of hip-hop philanthropists. There’s always something new when it comes to hip-hop fashion. Causing a cause for uproar, and extended discussion recently, has been the popularization of shorts that come down to mid-thigh - colloquially named “hoochie daddy shorts.” Join us for a fun conversation about hip-hop men’s fashion through the years and the time in which those looks arose. Drake’s newest release, “Honestly, Nevermind,” has sparked many reactions, but none as interesting as the question of the origins of House music which are rooted in Black gay clubs and with Black gay DJs. Continuing our #Pride2022 discussions, we’re going to briefly explore the history of House, and how we may have lost touch with this history. Special guests, Christina and Miguel, from the They Reminisce Over You podcast will be joining us to talk to us about their show, and why folks should be tuning in. They’ll be sticking around for our discussion about Black Canadian musicians who we love and have been influential. About They Reminisce Over You: We celebrate & honor our favorite music, movies & TV that we've enjoyed over the years. There are Black Country music fans. Joining us is one of them, and he's on a quest to uplift Black Country musicians. When we discuss Country music the first visions that come into our heads are typically cowboy hats, horses, a guitar and someone white. That narrative is common, but not a full or true narrative. Mike “Big Mike” Bryant is a podcast producer who spent some time on air at a Country radio station, and he knows a thing or two. Big Mike is joining us to discuss his story and how he came to fall in love with Country music. Mike “Big Mike” Bryant Bio: Mike Bryant, aka Big Mike, is an audiophile, podcast producer and radio guy from Rockville, MD. During broadcasting school, he began recording in a basement with “Two Guys and a Mic,” and his love for podcasting began. His radio career started at iHeart Media in Washington, D.C. He has worked in everything from promotions to an on-air apprenticeship on country radio in a major market. His passion for podcasting has introduced him to people from all walks of life. He loves this medium because he is always looking for a way to help others be creative and share their voices. He currently produces two shows on mental health, “The HomeWork,” and “Treat Yourself Like a Toddler,” hosted by a therapist, an acupuncturist and a life/career coach. Mike and his wife just recently transitioned their lives to Los Angeles a year ago, with their Boxer, Freya Louise, and cat, Odin. Is it inspiration, or is it imitation that’s created your newest favorite song? The growth of TikTok began in 2017, and became the latest juggernaut used by the music industry to determine what is a hit, or even create them. Artists are having to choose between being original or being viral, and it’s impacting how they create and how we listen. We’re going to talk about Black music in the Tiktok era. Joining us for this show is Queens-bred MC, Medino Green, as we continue to celebrate #Pride2022. Green’s new single “CLAP” is out now! Medino Green Bio: Medino Green, the hip-hop artist from Queens, NY, hit the scene back in 2009. Small in stature but big in his lyrical ability, he is one of a kind, standing at a mere 5’6”. A true product of the 90’s, with his flashy braggadocio, in your face style, Green is inspired by artists such as The Notorious B.I.G., LL Cool J, Fabolous, Lil’ Kim, and NAS. He’s remained true to the classic sounds of the era that has inspired him. With his latest mixtape, "inMyBag," Green reminds us why he is unique. The mixtape includes 10 freestyle tracks over familiar beats, including tracks like “Medino Say’s” to “GRN Bomb,” his New York cadence reminds us of where he’s from no matter where he’s at. In addition to the Mixtape, Green also put together a few videos inspired by Rap City’s Big Tigger in the Basement, also another classic moment for hip-hop culture while supporting his fellow queer artist peers by hanging their photos on the wall beside him. These days Green is gearing up for his debut album Mackadocious dropping later this year. The first single out the gate is “CLAP” which is available to stream on all music platforms. In 1992, about Yo-Yo’s sophomore record, Joan Morgan wrote in Spin Magazine “One year later, her outrage continues to provide a voice for those who lack a means of expression, especially when life explodes in their faces and outside their doors.” Because of how much hip-hop has changed, and how quickly, the album “Black Pearl” has been largely lost to history. That’s where Queue Points comes in. We are reminiscing about a Black hip-hop feminist classic, “Black Pearl.” Also, it’s Pride month, and we are going to be discussing the seminal classic “I Was Born This Way,” the first song to feature lyrics about being an out and proud gay man. Performed, in its original form, by Charles Valentino and made again by Carl Bean, the song has a long and interesting history worth revisiting. Oftentimes, covers of songs don’t get the same respect as the original. Sometimes the performing artist phones it in, or the style of the cover just doesn’t work. This Queue Points conversation is a special brotherhood discussion, where Kipper catches us up on where he’s been, what’s happening now, and where he’s going.
