In this episode Aidan and James discuss the possibility of life in our Universe. With the successful launch and landing of the Perseverance Rover on the surface of Mars in February 2021 we thought it timely to discuss the what the mission's aim is and the possibility of finding the existence of Martians. The future of space exploration is also discussed given that the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), which set to launch in October 2021, will enable us to look further in both space and time to study whether there are other planets in our Universe that could host humans or life of their own. Our Giant of the Week is Katherine Johnson, the African-American mathematician that was largely responsible (along with many other Black, Female Mathematicians) for putting the first NASA astronaut into Space (Alan Shephard) and the Apollo 11 mission to land Humans on the Moon. Share your thoughts with us on our Social Media Pages:Instagram: @radionuclear.podTwitter: @rad_podFacebook: RadioNuclear PodcastEmail: radionuclear.pod@gmail.com
In this episode Aidan and James explore the world of neuroscience by taking a look at CTE (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy) and concussions. Concussions arise in a number of sports, with athletes who partake in contact sports being the worse affected. We explain what a concussion is and how they can lead to the onset of the neurodegenerative disease CTE.  We play close attention to the recent rule changes in the sport of Rugby with examples from the 2021 6 Nations Competition and relate these observations to American Football and the action taken by the NFL.   This episode also explores the importance of medical imaging in these pathologies as prevention and early intervention really are the best treatment options.   We see the return of the Giant of the Week section, with Dr Bennet Omalu - be sure to find his story on our social media pages (below) and drop us a follow while you're there!  Instagram: @radionuclear.pod Twitter: @rad_pod Facebook: RadioNuclear Podcast E-mail: radionuclear.pod@gmail.com  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=druJDI6hiiY&t=26s&ab_channel=TED https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpv7BFsvTdY&ab_channel=CurePSP https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lCOrjuxboQA&t=5s&ab_channel=BostonUniversitySchoolofMedicine

In this episode we introduce the topic of cancer. Where the name comes from and how the disease can come to be. This is the first in a mini series about cancer with this episode serving as an introduction to discussions about the disease. We also highlight Dr Jane C Wright, the Giant of the Week who was a pioneering African American Physician who specialised in cancer research, treatment and chemotherapy development and administration. Go to our Instagram, Facebook and Twitter pages to see a photo of this fantastic scientist. Feel free to send in any questions you have about cancer or any other topic just as we have on this episode. Email: radionuclear.pod@gmail.comTwitter: @rad_podFacebook: RadioNuclear PodcastInstagram: @radionuclear.pod
In this episode we discuss the importance of clear and effective science communication in the modern era and how the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the best and worst of how science is relayed to the public. Also covered in this episode is the effect that President Trump has had on the interpretation of information and selecting the truth. The importance of asking the right questions and having the right sources is greater now than ever. Our Giant of the week is Lewis Howard Latimer, inventor of the carbon filament for lightbulbs. Well done to those who got it right on our social media. Latimer should be credited with the modern lightbulb instead of Edison. Just another example of why we need to keep discussing the roles of black scientists and engineers in the development of modern society. Some brilliant Public Engagement from King's College and the Royal College of Art: artxscience.co.ukIf you want to join the conversation get in touch on our social media pages:Facebook: RadioNuclear Podcast (@RadioNuclearPod)Instagram: @radionuclear.podTwitter: @rad_podSend in your questions to us and we'll be happy to answer them as best we can. We hope you enjoy!
