Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau was re-elected in a stronger-than-expected showing in national elections. But while his Liberal Party took the most seats in Parliament, it lost its majority and will have to rely on an opposition party to get anything passed. However Trudeau has so far ruled out forming a coalition government and is looking for parliamentary support for his minority government. Trudeau begins his second term facing an increasingly divided Parliament and country, with his rock-star appeal from four years ago diminished by scandal and unmet expectations. The UK Parliament sat on a Saturday for the first time in 37 years to try and get Prime Minister Boris Johnson's Brexit deal agreed. However the planned vote on Johnson's Brexit deal was pre-empted when MPs adopted an amendment which effectively requires the PM to ask for a third extension to its planned departure. The primary aim of the amendment is to make sure that Britain can't leave the EU on 31 October without legislation in place. By law, Johnson now has to ask the EU for another extension, but he insists he won't do this. He says he'll introduce legislation to leave at the end of the month, giving MPs a choice of his deal or no deal. Anchor & Producer - Aishwarya
An estimated 100,000 people have fled their homes in northeast Syria as Turkey pressed on with its offensive against Kurdish fighters. Turkey's air and ground operation into Syria came after US President Donald Trump, pulled American troops from their positions near the border, leaving the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) vulnerable to a Turkish assault. Turkey insists it is targeting "terrorist positions" and shows the "utmost caution" to avoid targeting civilians and infrastructure during its operation. However aid officials have warned of "yet another humanitarian crisis" in war-torn Syria. Despite growing international criticism of the campaign and concerns it could result in Islamic State terrorist group’s resurgence…. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has pledged to continue with the assault, whose stated goal is to create a buffer zone freed of the Kurdish fighters within which some of the 3.6 million refugees currently living in Turkey can also be resettled. Democrats have launched an impeachment inquiry into US President Donald Trump following a whistleblower’s complaint that detailed how Trump pressed the leader of Ukraine to help smear a political rival, the former vice-president Joe Biden. Trump has denied putting any pressure on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in a phone call in July, when Biden was leading polls to win the Democratic nomination for the White House race in 2020. Meanwhile US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has been ordered by Democrats to turn over documents relating to the Trump administration's dealings with Ukraine. In a letter, the heads of three House committees subpoenaed Pompeo to produce the documents within a week. Impeachment is a two-stage political process, rarely exercised, by which a US president can be removed from office for wrongdoing. Anchor & Producer - Aishwarya
U.S. President Trump authorized the deployment of additional U.S. forces to the Middle East to strengthen air and missile defenses around Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. U.S says the deployment would be defensive in nature. The developments come after attacks against two Saudi oil facilities last week. Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi rebels have said they were behind the attacks but the US and Saudi Arabia have both blamed Iran itself. Earlier Trump announced new ‘highest level’ sanctions against Tehran that focus on Iran's central bank and its sovereign wealth fund. Strikes hit the Abqaiq oil facility and the Khurais oil field in Saudi Arabia a week ago, affecting the global oil supply. Anchor & Producer - Aishwarya
Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced plans to annex parts of the West Bank if he wins re-election next week. His announcement was condemned by the Palestinians, Arab countries, the UN and the EU. If carried out, Netanyahu's plan would be a major blow to efforts to reach a negotiated two-state solution between Israelis and Palestinians. It would remove part of the land that Palestinians regard as the site of a future Palestinian state. The West Bank was captured from Jordan by Israel in 1967 war. It has been regarded for decades as Palestinian territory, and most of the international community regards it as being under Israeli occupation, with all settlements built there considered illegal, though Israel disputes these characterizations. Hong Kong protesters called for more demonstrations at the city's international airport. Saturday marks the beginning of the 14th straight weekend of planned protests in the Asian financial hub, despite attempts by the Hong Kong government to ease tensions across the city. Chief Executive Carrie Lam announced on Wednesday that the controversial China extradition bill would be withdrawn, a longtime demand of demonstrators and one of the main catalysts of the protest movement. But protest leaders say the concession was too little too late. The demonstrations on Saturday follow another night of clashes between police and protesters in the crowded district of Mong Kok, with officers using tear gas to disperse crowds. Brexit took yet another chaotic turn on Wednesday when UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced plan to suspend Parliament - a process known as proroguing - for five weeks, ahead of a Queen's Speech on 14 October. The controversial request was approved by Queen Elizabeth. Opposition members denounced the move as unconstitutional and undemocratic. Protests also took place across UK to oppose the suspension of Parliament. The development means that British MPs, a majority of whom oppose no-deal, now effectively have just a few days before and after Parliament is suspended, to pass any legislation preventing a hard break with the EU. Brexit is due to happen on October 31, and Johnson has promised the UK will leave the European Union on that date with or without a deal.
Brazil's president has ordered the armed forces to help fight a record number of forest fires in the Amazon. The announcement comes after intense pressure from European leaders as fires continued to rage in the world’s biggest tropical rainforest and criticism of Jair Bolsonaro’s environmental policies intensified. It came after France and Ireland said they would not ratify a huge trade deal with South American nations unless Brazil does more to tackle blazes in the Amazon. Forest fires are an annual occurrence in the Amazon region – about 60% of which lies in Brazil. But experts and campaigners blame the scale of this year’s blaze on the green light they believe Bolsonaro has given to those who wish to destroy the rainforest. Anchor & Producer- Aishwarya
All 24 Indian crew members who were aboard Iranian oil tanker Grace1- a vessel seized by Gibraltar authorities with the help of British marines over a month ago - have been freed. This came after Gibraltar Supreme Court said that the Iranian tanker was free to sail after government said it had received assurances from Iran that Grace 1 would not sail to countries "subject to European Union sanctions" - that is, Syria. The Grace 1 was detained by Gibraltar authorities with the help of the United Kingdom on July 4 on charges of transporting oil to Syria in violation of European Union sanctions. Two weeks later, Iran reciprocated by seizing a British oil tanker near the Strait of Hormuz. The 18 Indians aboard the British vessel, the Stena Impero, are yet to be released. The trade war between the United States and China is heating up again, with US President Donald Trump announcing plans to impose a 10% tariff on the $300 billion worth of imports from China. This on top of the $250 billion that Trump has already hit with 25% import taxes. The People’s Bank of China responded by allowing the managed exchange rate to depreciate beyond seven yuan to the dollar for the first time in 11 years. The Trump administration hit back by naming China a ‘currency manipulator’ – the first time the US had done that to any country in 25 years. Experts declared a currency war, and investors immediately sent global stock markets lower. The US says it would now engage with IMF to 'eliminate the unfair competitive advantage created by China's latest actions'. Anchor & Producer- Aishwarya

North Korea says its leader Kim Jong Un supervised another test-firing of a new multiple rocket launcher system on Friday that could potentially enhance the country's ability to strike targets in South Korea and U.S. military bases there. This is North Korea’s third round of weapons tests in just over a week. Experts say the North's increased testing activity is aimed at ramping up pressure on Washington and Seoul over stalled nuclear negotiations with the United States and planned U.S.-South Korea military exercises, and that its weapons displays could intensify in the coming months if progress in talks isn't made. Tensions between Iran and UK are rising over the detention of their respective ships. Iran’s Grace 1 tanker was detained by authorities in Gibraltar with the help of the British royal marines on the suspicion that it was ferrying a cargo of 2.1 million barrels of crude oil to Syria, in contravention of European sanctions. Iran denied the tanker was heading for Syria, and responded to the seizure by detaining a British-flagged tanker in the Strait of Hormuz. The crisis in the Strait of Hormuz has become part of a larger struggle between Iran and the US – and by proxy the UK – which was sparked when President Donald Trump abandoned a landmark nuclear deal. The Indian Foreign Ministry has reached out to both Iranian and British authorities seeking the release and repatriation of the 42 Indian nationals caught in the middle of a standoff between the two countries. The US says it is removing Turkey from its F-35 fighter jets programme, after Ankara received the first parts of a Russian missile defence system. The US’ move came due to Turkey’s decision to acquire the Russian S-400 air defense system. The US says the "F-35 cannot coexist with a Russian intelligence collection platform that will be used to learn about its advanced capabilities". Russia began delivering its advanced S-400 system to Turkey last week. Turkey and the US are key Nato allies - but Ankara has also been establishing closer links with Russia. Russia reacted to US’ move by offering Turkey to buy its Sukhoi Su-35 fighter jets instead. Anchor & Producer- Aishwarya Kapoor
Kyriakos Mitsotakis was sworn- in as Greece’s new Prime Minister on Tuesday after a robust election victory of his New Democracy party. The new Prime Minister has his work cut out for him. The country’s outlook has improved following an agonizingly prolonged economic depression that destroyed a quarter of Greece’s economy, but more than 30% of its citizens remain trapped in poverty and unemployment remains at 18%. Mitsotakis says he will renegotiate Greece’s commitment to keep an annual budget surplus and to speed privatization of many public services in order to lower taxes and jump-start economic growth. At least 12 people have been arrested in the first wave of detentions linked to anti-government protests in Hong Kong that led to the storming and vandalising of the city’s parliament. For the past month, protesters have been demanding the withdrawal of a bill that would allow extraditions to the Chinese mainland as anger has grown against Hong Kong authorities and morphed into a wider political crisis. The occupation of the legislature on Monday night coincided with a massive peaceful protest in which organisers say more than half a million people marched through the city on the anniversary of Hong Kong’s 1997 return to Chinese rule. 14th edition of the G20 Summit was held in Osaka. The leaders of the G-20 agreed to make united efforts to address major global economic challenges and work together to foster global economic growth while harnessing the power of technological innovation and digitization. During the summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted issues including global economy and finance, open and resilient finance system, fight against corruption, vision for women empowerment, agriculture, global health, climate change and clean energy. At the summit, United States and China agreed to resume trade negotiations, easing a protracted row that has fuelled a global economic slowdown. After meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, Washington also agreed on not imposing additional tariffs on Chinese imports. 19 members of the G20, without the United States, also agreed to the “irreversibility” of the Paris climate deal and pledged its full implementation, after two days of talks. Tensions between US and Iran have escalated. after an unmanned US drone was shot down in the strait of Hormuz by Iran, which accused America of spying in its airspace in the south of the country. The US military said the drone was in international airspace. President Donald Trump labelled the downing of the drone as a ‘big mistake’. He approved but then aborted strikes against Iranian targets on Thursday. Later Trump described in more detail his decision to pull back strikes on Iran, saying he didn't feel an attack that left 150 dead was proportionate to the downing of a US drone. Relations between the two adversaries have taken a dangerous turn this week, beginning with the Trump administration's decision on Monday to deploy 1,000 additional troops and more military resources to the Middle East. This after US blamed Iran for conducting attacks against oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman. Tehran denied the accusations. Anchor - Aishwarya Kapoor
