While there are many factors that weigh into creating a treatment regimen, understanding the different classes of antibiotics and how they work is important to ensure your cattle are getting the best treatment response.   A variety of infectious diseases can compromise cattle health, affecting growth, performance and operational profitability. Bovine Respiratory Disease (BRD) is one of the most common and costly. Prevention is the first line of defense against BRD. Having management protocols in place to reduce risk factors, along with a vaccine program, can help protect your herd. But when animals do get sick, it’s vital to identify and treat cattle as soon as possible with the right treatment to ensure the longevity of treatment options and reduce the risk of resistance.   Not all antibiotics are created equal Every antibiotic has a different mix of characteristics. Knowing the antibiotic class and its characteristics when treating cattle gives a better understanding of how it works. Two of the most common antibiotic classes used to treat respiratory disease in cattle are macrolides and fluoroquinolones. Macrolides are time-dependent bacteriostatic antibiotics. This means they must maintain a minimal concentration that is greater than the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) over a period of time to overcome infectious bacteria. The MIC is the minimum amount of drug needed to suppress the replication of bacteria. The longer the antibiotic is present in the animal at or above the MIC level, the more it inhibits bacteria reproduction so allowing time for macrolides to work is critical. In certain “bug-drug” combinations such as tulathromycin and some isolates of Mannheimia haemolytica, macrolides can be bactericidal making initial concentrations and appropriate dosing more critical. Fluoroquinolones are concentration-dependent bactericidal antibiotics. This means they only need to reach concentrations above the MIC for very short periods to be effective. In some models, the higher the initial concentration of the fluoroquinolone above the MIC, the more effective the therapy. How to choose the correct antibiotic Understanding how an antibiotic works is one step to minimizing the risk of resistance. There are a few things producers should ask themselves when choosing an antibiotic to make the right choice for their operation: Do I know the health history of the cattle being treated? If there was a metaphylaxis treatment with one class of antibiotic, using a different class if subsequent treatment is required may be warranted. Do I know the weight of the animal being treated? Remember when administering antibiotics, the dose is based on weight of the animal. Getting an accurate weight on each animal being treated is important to the success rate of antibiotic therapy. What is the causative pathogen? Necropsies are an excellent tool to understand what bacteria your cattle are challenged with. Cultures can help determine what bacteria is affecting your herd and the best treatment for that strain. Have I read the product label? Once you understand the bacteria strain you’re dealing with, it’s important to choose a product that’s labeled to control or treat that associated bacteria. It’s also important to ensure you are following directions for proper dosage, route of administration and withdrawal periods to get the most effective treatment. Do I have bigger issues to address? When seeing an uptick in BRD cases, we can often put the blame on animal health products. It’s important to remember medicine cannot overcome poor management. Good animal husbandry and management practices, reducing stress and a solid nutrition program are critical to positive animal health. Work with your veterinarian to determine where current practices may be contributing to illness. Producers should consult their veterinarian to help them choose appropriate classes of antibiotics and consider antibiotic characteristics such as the spectrum of activity, mode of action, duration of action, efficacy and withdrawal period to help them treat their herd responsibly. COW COUNTRY NEWS   The SEC Seeks To Halt A $191 Million Cattle Ponzi Scheme According DTN Progressive Farmer and Meating Place, The Securities and Exchange Commission has frozen the assets of a Texas-based cattle marketing company, alleging the company fraudulently sold securities in "cattle contracts" as a $191 million Ponzi scheme that would "soon implode."   The company, Agridime LLC out of Fort Worth, Texas, is now under a court-ordered receivership under the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas with Agridime's assets frozen after the SEC obtained a temporary restraining order against Agridime and its owners.   Agridime has raised $191 million since 2021 from more than 2,100 investors in at least 15 states, the SEC stated. The SEC stated Agridime, however, had less than $1.5 million in cash as of Sept. 30, and insufficient operating revenues. The SEC stated, "It appears that Agridime's Ponzi scheme will soon implode unless it continues to raise money from new investor-victims."   Agridime sells investment contracts related to the buying and selling of cattle, dubbed as "cattle contracts." The SEC complaint stated Agridime promised investors guaranteed annual returns ranging from 15% to 20% -- going as high as 32% -- and marketed cattle contracts on Agridime's website as a way for investors to passively profit from owning cattle "without having to do all of the work."   Agridime is owned by Jed Wood, 62, of Fort Worth, Texas, and Josh Link, 30, of Gilbert, Arizona. Both are named as defendants in the case. Wood and Link founded Agridime in 2017.    The SEC alleges they told investors that Agridime would use their funds to acquire, feed, and raise cattle on its network of ranches, and investors would help provide “fellow Americans with the highest quality farm fresh beef available.” However, as the complaint alleges, the defendants did not purchase nearly enough cattle or generate sufficient revenues from cattle operations to deliver the promised returns.   Instead, the complaint alleges that, since December 2022, the defendants have used at least $58 million of new investor funds to make Ponzi payments to prior investors and more than $11 million to pay undisclosed sales commissions to Wood, Link, Link’s wife, and other Agridime sales representatives.    A U.S. District Judge extended the SEC's temporary restraining order until Jan. 9, 2024, and delayed a hearing on the SEC's request for a preliminary injunction until a hearing now set for Jan. 5, 2024.   Some Top Highlighted Stories of 2023 from The Cattle Business Weekly  Cattle Prices Climb Throughout the year cattle prices continued to climb on all classes of cattle. That was a welcome relief for many cattle operations as higher interest rates and input costs were making bottom lines thin.  During the fall calf run October-November fresh weaned calves brought $1600-$1800 per head. That is almost double what was realized in 2022. Prices tapered off with uncertainty in the board as the final month of the year arrived, but overall prices were still above the year prior. Big Boost To Agricultural Research Funding USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture has established a new Research Facilities Act Program competitive grant program, which was approved to provide one-year funds for the first time in 2023. The program is designed to assist in the construction, alteration, acquisition, modernization, renovation, or remodeling of an agricultural research facility to enhance the institution’s long-term impact on food and agricultural research. Awardees include: Mississippi State University, Texas A&M AgriLife Research, University of Idaho, University of Illinois, University of Kentucky, University of Vermont and State Agricultural College, and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.  Additional public and private funding sources are also emerging with a focus on agricultural research. As examples: the University of California at Davis received a $50 million private donation to build an agricultural research hub. Similarly, Ohio State University is developing an AgTech Innovation Hub and the University of Idaho will receive $55 million from USDA for ag research. Both efforts will research how to combat the impact of climate change. As well, Mississippi State University recently opened the Agricultural Autonomy Institute, the nation’s first and only interdisciplinary research center focused on autonomous technologies to enhance on-farm precision and efficiency.  Cattle Contracts Library Pilot Program Will Continue Made available in January 2023, the USDA launched the Cattle Contracts Library Pilot Program in an effort to support the cattle market and show transparency in contract terms offered by packers to producers for the purchase of cattle.  In October, the USDA continued the Cattle Contracts Library Pilot Program in order to continue reporting vital market information for farmers and ranchers while gathering additional information on the effectiveness of the pilot. Support For More Regional Meat Processing Grows Piggybacking off of USDA funding in 2022, came additional funding for meat processors this year.  $125 million through two new grant programs was created to offer more options for meat and poultry farmers by investing in independent, local meat and poultry processing projects that increase competition and enhance the resiliency of the food supply chain. Season 5, EPISODE 227 Animal Health & Disease Management:  Should We Be Concerned & Tariff Updates Improving Animal & Disease Management Practices: Foot & Mouth Disease, and Tariff News Foot & Mouth Disease: In Livestock Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is a severe, fast-spreading viral disease that primarily affects cloven-hoofed animals, including cows, pigs, sheep, goats, and deer. FMD is one of the most challenging animal diseases to control. Although most infected animals survive, they're left weak and unable to produce the level of meat and milk prior to infection. FMD was first discovered in the United States in 1870 and eradicated in 1929. FMD is not a human health or food safety threat. The disease is not related to hand, foot, and mouth disease, a common childhood illness caused by a different virus. How To Identify Foot & Mouth Disease There are 7 known types and more than 60 subtypes of the FMD virus, meaning immunity to one type doesn't protect animals against other types or subtypes. The first signs of illness usually appear within 2 to 14 days after infection. Here's what to look for: Fever Great increase in temperature for 2 to 3 days Blisters/Vesicles Blisters can develop on the tongue and lips, in and around the mouth, on the mammary glands, and around the hooves. They rupture and discharge clear or cloudy fluid. Erosions When blisters pop, they leave raw, eroded areas surrounded by ragged fragments of loose tissue. Excess saliva Infected animals may have sticky, foamy, and stringy saliva. Loss of appetite Painful tongue and mouth blisters may lead animals to eat less. Lameness and a reluctance to move or stand Abortions Animals can experience spontaneous abortions and sterility. Milk Dairy cows may have low milk production. Heart disease and death These symptoms are especially prevalent in newborn animals. FMD Can Easily Be Confused With Other Diseases FMD may be confused with other diseases that produce blisters, including vesicular stomatitis, bluetongue, bovine viral diarrhea, foot rot in cattle, and swine vesicular disease. The only way to tell if the blisters are caused by the FMD virus is through laboratory testing. If you observe mouth or feet blisters in your animals, report them immediately so that they can be tested. How To Prevent Foot & Mouth Disease Report signs of disease. Livestock owners, livestock transport and slaughter personnel, and private veterinarians should watch for symptoms of FMD and immediately report sick animals to Federal, State, Tribal, or local animal health officials. This is especially important if the animals in question have had contact with other animals at locations like livestock markets, feedlots, or fairgrounds. Be careful what you pack. When traveling outside of the United States, don't bring back any prohibited items (including food) or dirty footwear or clothing that could potentially move the FMD virus or other disease agents. Declare to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Upon entering the United States, travelers should indicate to the U.S. Customs any visits to farms, ranches, or other areas where livestock are raised or kept. You should also declare any visits to zoos, circuses, fairs, and other facilities or events where animals were exhibited. Follow a “5-day” rule. If you visited a farm or had any contact with livestock on your trip, you should avoid all contact with livestock, zoo animals, or wildlife for 5 days after you return to the United States. If you're returning with pet dogs or cats that have had contact with livestock or been in areas frequented by livestock, make sure your pet’s feet, fur, and bedding are free of any dirt or mud and that their bedding doesn't contain straw, hay, or other natural materials. Bathe your pet as soon as you reach your final destination and keep it from all livestock for at least 5 days after returning to the United States. Controlling By APHIS  Foot & Mouth Disease Because FMD occurs in many parts of the world, there's always a chance it could be reintroduced into the United States. APHIS continuously monitors FMD worldwide. Our veterinarians stationed overseas help other countries control and eradicate the disease, which reduces the risk of it spreading to the United States. At ports of entry, we work with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Customs and Border Protection to screen cargo and prevent travelers from bringing any products of concern into the United States. We restrict or prohibit imports of many animals and animal byproducts from areas known to be affected with FMD. We also work with the U.S. Armed Forces to make sure military vehicles and equipment are properly cleaned and disinfected before they return to the United States from international duty. Across the country, APHIS and other Federal, State, and Tribal animal health officials work with accredited veterinarians to monitor domestic livestock for FMD. We have response plans in place that we can quickly activate if the disease is found in the United States.  Click HERE for additional details. Tariffs: China Targets U.S Agriculture For Retaliation of 20% The United States plans to impose a 20% tariff on Chinese goods, could result in a significant escalation in trade tensions between the two economic giants. In response, China is reportedly preparing countermeasures that could directly impact U.S. agriculture and food exports. According to The Global Times, the official newspaper of the Chinese Communist Party, Beijing "will definitely carry out strong, powerful countermeasures" if the U.S. increases the current 10% tariff. The report indicates that American agricultural products, including beef and pork, are "most likely" to be targeted with new tariffs. The trade uncertainty is already shaking U.S. agricultural markets. Hog futures have dropped 6% in recent trading sessions, according to the Daily Livestock Report (DLR). China and Hong Kong together account for 19% of U.S. beef exports and 6.5% of pork exports—significant figures that highlight the stakes of these trade tensions. As it stands, China has already imposed a 37% tariff on U.S. pork and a 12% tariff on U.S. beef, making American meat exports less competitive in the Chinese market. A further escalation could worsen the situation for U.S. farmers and ranchers. With agriculture facing potential economic strain, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Rollins has signaled readiness to implement relief measures. She indicated that a financial aid package similar to the $28 billion bailout deployed during the 2018 trade war under President Trump could be reintroduced. However, reports suggest that only $4 billion remains in the fund earmarked for agricultural assistance in 2025, raising concerns about the adequacy of available support. All eyes are on how China will respond and what further actions the U.S. might take. The agricultural sector, already facing global market challenges, is bracing for potential disruptions. For farmers, ranchers, and agribusinesses, staying informed about trade policy developments is crucial. If China follows through with its threats, the impact could be widespread across U.S. agriculture, affecting prices, exports, and overall farm profitability. Canada and Mexico are also in the cross hairs of trade tariffs with both countries promising immediate retaliatory responses. Some Say The DOGE Should Look At The Beef Checkoff According to Meating Place, the Ranchers-Cattlemen Action Legal Fund United Stockgrowers of America or R-CALF, CEO Bill Bullard encouraged ranchers and cattlemen to reach out to President Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to request the agency audit the USDA’s Beef Checkoff Program.  Bullard said that we’ve long argued that the beef checkoff program, which is a USDA program that requires cattle producers to pay $1 for every head of cattle they sell; and it collects about $70 million each year, which he says, much of that comes from producers who do not support the mandatory government program.  He went on to say that while the beef checkoff program is supposed to fund education, promotion and research for beef, and not fund lobbying, evidence of abuse has surfaced and an independent audit report found that $216,000 of mandatory producer contributions had been misspent. The Beef Checkoff has strong cattle producer support, according to The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA), and undergoes annual audits and posts that information on their website. NCBA Vice President of Government Affairs Ethan Lane told Meating Place that the Beef Checkoff is an example of individual farmers and ranchers coming together to create a program that conducts research, educates consumers and builds demand for beef with a return on investment to producers of $13.41 for every $1 invested—all while operating with annual financial audits, strict oversight and at no cost to American taxpayers. R-CALF is a non-profit organization serving as a voice for independent cow-calf and sheep producers and feeders across America. NCBA is a non-profit trade association representing U.S. cattle producers.  DOGE is a temporary contracted organization under the United States Digital Service, which has asked the public to contact the organization with ideas for “reducing waste, fraud and abuse.” Imports Of Mexican Cattle Are Expected To Resume  A temporary suspension of imports of Mexican cattle into the United States is ending, according to several reports. The Mexican Agriculture Minister said that USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service  or  (APHIS) signed the first memorandums to allow the suspension to be lifted. The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) thanked the Trump administration and USDA for “working swiftly” to protect the U.S cattle supply from the threat of New World Screwworm, which sparked the import suspension late last year. APHIS has developed a comprehensive protocol that involves layers of veterinary inspections and treatment to prevent the spread of screwworm and other types of ticks and insects. Retail Beef Demand Stays Strong in 2025 According to Oklahoma State University Extension Livestock Marketing Specialist Derrell Peel, The all-fresh retail beef price for January was $8.15/lb., up 4.3% year over year.  All-fresh beef retail prices have averaged 5.2% higher month over month for the last year leading to retail all-fresh beef prices for the past twelve months at a record average level of $8.27/lb. Per capita beef consumption in 2024 was unexpectedly higher at 59.7 pounds as a result of constant domestic beef production and larger net imports of beef. The combination of increased beef consumption and higher prices he says indicates stronger beef demand.   All-fresh retail beef prices continue to increase relative to pork and broiler prices.  Wholesale Choice beef cutout prices have averaged 11.8% higher year over year for the first six weeks of 2025. Prices are higher for all primals with stronger prices for end meats relative to middle meats.  Prices for rib primals are up 9.2% year over year with loins prices up 4.6% compared to the first six weeks a year ago.  Chuck prices are 14.8% higher and round primal prices are up 22.3% year over year.  Prices for most wholesale beef cuts are higher thus far in 2025 compared to one year ago Most steak prices are higher, including Strip Loins and Ribeye. The most notable exception is weaker prices for Tenderloin in recent weeks.  Strong prices and numerous lean carcass cuts, primarily from the round, are supported by increased grinding demand for ground beef production. American Beef Labeling Act Sparks Debate Over Mandatory Country-of-Origin Labeling (MCOOL) A new federal proposal to reinstate mandatory country-of-origin labeling (MCOOL) for beef has ignited debate among industry leaders, ranchers, and lawmakers. While some ranchers and advocacy groups support the American Beef Labeling Act, the Meat Institute has expressed concerns, citing past trade disputes and economic impacts. What Is the American Beef Labeling Act? The bipartisan bill, introduced in the U.S. Senate, seeks to require beef sold in the United States to display its country of origin. However, MCOOL was previously repealed in 2015 after the World Trade Organization (WTO) ruled that it violated trade agreements by unfairly discriminating against Canadian and Mexican livestock producers. The bill’s lead sponsors, Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) and Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.), are joined by co-sponsors John Fetterman (D-Pa.), Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), John Hoeven (R-N.D.), Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.), and Mike Rounds (R-S.D.). If passed, the legislation would direct the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) and USDA to develop a WTO-compliant solution within 12 months. If no agreement is reached, the previous MCOOL rule would automatically be reinstated for beef. Cattle Industry News NCBA Calls Out Supreme Court Decision on Corporate Transparency Act: A Blow to Family Farms and Ranches The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) voiced strong disappointment following the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to lift an injunction that had temporarily halted enforcement of the Corporate Transparency Act (CTA). The CTA introduces new reporting requirements that some say could impose significant burdens on small businesses, including family-owned farms and ranches. NCBA Executive Director of Government Affairs, Kent Bacus, expressed concern about the potential impact by saying the Corporate Transparency Act will blanket family-owned farms and ranches in excessive red tape, placing millions of small business owners at risk of legal trouble.  He went on to say that he is urging President Trump and the Treasury Secretary to intervene and protect small businesses from these onerous requirements by delaying enforcement until a workable solution is found. While NCBA’s advocacy primarily focuses on farmers and ranchers, the Act’s implications extend beyond agriculture. NCBA’s Director of Policy Communications highlighted how the law could also weigh heavily on small and family-owned meat processors, adding to their regulatory challenges. The U.S. Supreme Court's decision overturned a nationwide injunction, allowing the Department of Treasury to enforce the Act while ongoing federal court cases challenge its legality. What This Means for Small Businesses The CTA would require entities to disclose detailed ownership information to the federal government, which could pose administrative and financial challenges for smaller operations.  Given the complexity of these new requirements, it is recommended that whether in agriculture, meat processing, or other industries—seek advice from legal or tax professionals to ensure compliance and mitigate risks. Cattle & Agriculture Industry News Beef Markets Charge Into 2025 According to Derrell S. Peel, Oklahoma State University Extension Livestock Marketing Specialist and MeatingPlace.Com, cattle and beef markets rocketed out of the gate coming into 2025. With no post-holiday wavering, all cattle and beef markets moved higher in the first half of January — setting new record price levels to start the new year. This continues the trend of the last three years. Cattle prices began to move higher after 2021 and increased more sharply in 2023-2024.  In Oklahoma auctions in the week ending Jan. 17, 2025, the price of 500-pound steers (M/L, #1) was $361.88/cwt., up 18.1% year over year and up 111.1% from the same week four years ago in 2021. For 800-pound steers, the price was $269.07/cwt., up 21.0% year over year and up 105.1% in the last four years  The 5-market fed steer live price was $203.56/cwt. for the week ending January 17, up 17.3% from one year ago and up 85.9% from January 2021. Daily 5-market fed steer prices hit $200/cwt. for the first time ever on January 7 and reached as high as $205.37/cwt. on January 15. Higher fed prices are expected ahead.  The strong cattle and beef price trend coming into 2025 is expected to continue as cattle inventories and beef supplies tighten further in the coming months.  However, while cattle and beef markets are strong internally, external shocks from political uncertainty along with U.S. and global macroeconomic jitters may cause short-term shocks and short-lived market setbacks. Nebraska Legislators Move Against Cultivated Meat Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen and State Senator Barry DeKay have introduced a bill aimed at prohibiting the manufacturing, distribution, and sale of lab-grown meat within the state. According to a press release from the governor’s office, the proposed legislation seeks to safeguard Nebraska’s agricultural heritage and the integrity of natural meat products. Preserving Nebraska’s Agricultural Identity Gov. Pillen emphasized the importance of protecting Nebraska’s agricultural legacy, stating: “We feed the world and save the planet. To ensure that we can do that for generations to come, we need to take steps that keep extremists from introducing unproven meat products to consumers.” The bill defines “cultivated food protein” and categorizes such products as “adulterated food products” under Nebraska’s Pure Food Act. This classification would require clear labeling to distinguish lab-grown products from traditional meat. Concerns Over Lab-Grown Meat State Sen. DeKay raised concerns about the nutritional value and transparency of lab-grown meat, explaining: “There are clear, recognized benefits of meat as a source of protein. It is uncertain whether manufactured meat protein is a substitute for natural meat sources to meet essential dietary needs. I question elevating lab meat to a level of equivalency with real meat.” He also highlighted the potential economic and ethical issues surrounding lab-grown meat production, pointing to its support from organizations advocating for the elimination of animal agriculture in Nebraska and across the United States. Ensuring Transparency and Protecting Livestock A core focus of the proposed legislation is to establish clear labeling rules, ensuring consumers are aware that cultured meat is not traditional meat. Sen. DeKay added: “Until or unless there are clear labeling rules that adequately disclose that cultured meat is not real meat, its sale allows lab meats to unfairly benefit from industry investments in marketing and production. This is part of the process to make sure our way of life, our livestock, and the products we put on the dinner table stay intact for the future.” The Broader Implications Nebraska’s agriculture industry is a cornerstone of the state’s economy, producing world-renowned beef and other livestock products. With this bill, lawmakers aim to protect the state’s agricultural identity, ensure consumer transparency, and maintain the viability of traditional meat production for generations to come. New World Screwworm In Cattle  New World Screwworm:  What you Need to Know On November 22, 2024, the Chief Veterinary Officer of Mexico informed the United States Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) of a confirmed case of New World screwworm (NWS, Cochliomyia hominivorax). This alarming detection poses a serious threat to livestock and wildlife in North America. Here’s what you need to know about this devastating pest and its implications. What Is New World Screwworm? New World screwworm is a highly destructive pest that affects livestock, other warm-blooded animals, and occasionally humans. NWS larvae infest animals through open wounds or mucous membranes, feeding on living tissue rather than dead tissue or carrion. If left untreated, infestations can be fatal. Key Facts About New World Screwworm: NWS is endemic to Cuba, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and parts of South America. It has been moving northward since 2023, spreading from Panama to Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala, and now Mexico. U.S. Measures to Prevent NWS Spread To protect livestock and wildlife in the United States, APHIS is taking immediate action: Import Restrictions: Livestock imports, including equines, from Mexico are temporarily restricted. Horses originating from or residing in Mexico within 60 days prior to export will need to comply with stringent import protocols. Established Protocols: Pre-export treatment and examination. Treatment and examination upon arrival. A 7-day quarantine in an approved permanent import facility. These protocols follow the guidelines outlined in eCFR 9 CFR 93.308 and VSG 13424.1. Why Awareness Matters Illegally imported equines and stray animals crossing the border could introduce NWS into the United States. It is crucial for those handling livestock and pets to be vigilant. Signs of Screwworm Infestation: Draining or enlarging wounds. Signs of discomfort such as head shaking or irritated behavior. Presence of screwworm larvae (maggots) or eggs. Screwworm eggs are creamy-white and often found near the edges of wounds. Infestations commonly occur in: Navels of newborn animals. Nasal or eye openings. Genitalia and branding or dehorning wounds. What to Do If You Suspect Screwworm If you notice signs of infestation: Immediately contact your local accredited veterinarian, state animal health official, or APHIS veterinarian. Regularly inspect your pets and livestock, especially if they have wounds or show signs of discomfort. Cattle & Agriculture Industry News Scientists Turn To AI To Reduce Cow Methane Researchers are considering using generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) protocols in order to develop new solutions to reduce methane emissions from cows. A team of scientists at USDA’s Agricultural Research Service Livestock Nutrient Management Research Unit and the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at the Iowa State University are using AI to sift through large computational models to develop new approaches to managing the methane emissions. The current focus involves the discovery of a group of compound molecules that can inhibit methane production in the largest of a cow’s four stomach compartments. One effective molecule has been proven to reduce enteric methane production by up to 98%. AI also may fast-forward the laboratory research process and possibly address the potential costs of launching additional research, according to the scientists. Cattle & Agriculture Industry News First Death Related To H5N1 In US Reported The Louisiana Department of Health has confirmed that a patient hospitalized with the first U.S. case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), or H5N1, has died. The patient, over 65 years old and with underlying medical conditions, contracted the virus through exposure to a backyard poultry flock and wild birds. No additional H5N1 cases or evidence of person-to-person transmission have been identified, and this remains Louisiana’s sole human case of the virus. The general public faces a low risk, but individuals working with birds or engaging in activities involving poultry or livestock are at higher risk. Cattle & Agriculture Industry News Former USDA Counsel Named Deputy Ag Secretary A veteran of the first Trump administration's agriculture team has been named to be deputy secretary of the USDA. President-elect Donald Trump announced his nomination of Stephen Vaden to be deputy under Brooke Rollins, a former think tank executive already tapped to head the USDA. A Yale law graduate, Vaden served as USDA general counsel from 2018-2020, when he was confirmed to a judicial appointment on the U.S. Court of International Trade. He has served as a board member of the Commodity Credit Corp. CDC Confirms Nations First Severe H5N1 Infection Of Human A patient in Louisiana was hospitalized with a severe case of avian influenza (H5N1), marking the first instance in the United States of severe illness linked to the virus, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced today in a news release and press call. CDC said the Louisiana patient, one of 61 human cases to occur in the United States since April, was infected with a D1.1 virus recently detected in wild birds and poultry in the U.S. and in recent human cases in British Columbia, Canada, and in the state of Washington. Officials noted the D1.1 strain of H5N1 is different from the B3.13 genotype detected in dairy cows, sporadic human cases in multiple states, and some poultry outbreaks in the U.S.  No person-to-person spread of H5 bird flu has been detected. California State Of Emergency, New Human Infections, Canadian Struggles all due to H5N1 Gov. Gavin Newsom issued a state of emergency in an effort to streamline the Golden State’s response to highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI). Several California agencies have developed coordinated responses to address and minimize farm worker exposures, lower raw dairy product contamination and mitigate the spread of the virus, the governor said in a statement: He said “This proclamation is a targeted action to ensure government agencies have the resources and flexibility they need to respond quickly to this outbreak.” About 680 dairy farms are under quarantine from HPAI outbreaks, while 6.2 million birds have been hit and 36 people infected across California. A commercial poultry worker in northwest Iowa is now the first confirmed human case of HPAI in the Hawkeye State, according to the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (Iowa HHS). An estimated 6.7 million birds have been affected in more than a dozen counties across Iowa, according to USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS). The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) announced that more than 13.9 million birds have been impacted by HPAI in the most recent tally of the spread of H5N1 infections across nine provinces. British Columbia is reporting the highest number of HPAI cases among 8.3 million birds. New Brunswick has the lowest number of birds affected by avian influenza with fewer than 100 birds at two locations being confirmed with the virus. Beef Processor Fined For Odor Violations The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) fined STX Beef Company $200,000 for violations linked to foul odors coming from its Corpus Christi facility, according to a local report. The penalty follows years of complaints about smells traced to cattle processing and wastewater management issues. TCEQ also cited equipment failures, inadequate scrubber systems and poor recordkeeping. Of the fine, $2,000 is already paid, with $40,000 due soon. Over $80,000 will support Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi’s AutoCheck program, addressing regional vehicle emissions. The company has 30 days to submit an odor control plan, including equipment repairs and new systems, and must comply with air quality rules for five years. Corporate Transparency Act Reporting Requirement Will Return Due to Court Ruling Producers pay attention now.  The Corporate Transparency Act filing requirements are back in effect following a court decision that reverses the injunction that previously halted this mandate.  NCBA Executive Director of Government Affairs Kent Bacus said that The Corporate Transparency Act requires millions of family farmers and ranchers to file complex paperwork and disclose beneficial ownership information with the federal government under penalty of severe fines and jail time. Earlier last week, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals lifted a nationwide preliminary injunction on the enforcement of the Corporate Transparency Act, holding that the government is likely to prevail in a constitutional challenge. EPISODE 216 DETAILS Prevent Scours This Upcoming Calving Season Plus Cattle Industry News How To Prevent Calf Scours: Feed Farmatan Feed Farmatan To Prevent Scours This Calving Season Calving season is getting ready to start for many producers and for some others it is still a ways away yet.  Regardless, we need to get a jump on scours and make sure each and every calf that hits the ground has the best chance of survival.  A simple solution… FARMATAN from Imogene Ingredients.   WHAT CAUSES SCOURS IN BEEF CATTLE/CALVES Clostridia-Enterotoxemia The most common form of Clostridium in cattle is caused by Clostridia perfringens. The gram-positive bacteria are a challenge due to its ability to form spores and lay dormant for long-periods of time. The bacteria reproduce by releasing spores into its environment (soil, feed, manure). The spores can even lay dormant in the animal’s intestine until opportunity presents itself. Infection takes place either through ingestion of spores or through an open wound. The most severe cases happen within the first month of a calf’s life, and can result in sudden death. Clinical Signs Diarrhea - Bloody, Mucus Present, Bubbly Dehydrated Bloat Blindness Prevention/Treatment: Prevention can be difficult due to the Clostridia spores being extremely durable and present almost everywhere. Complete cleanout and disinfection between calves is helpful, but not always effective. A good vaccination program will reduce clinical disease. The best method is to develop good gut health and the immune system of the calf. Farmatan has been shown to strengthen the intestinal wall, helping to prevent infection from taking hold. Coccidiosis Cattle are host to numerous species of Coccidia, a single-celled protozoal parasite. Infection and clinical symptoms can happen any time during a calf’s life, with the most severe reaction usually occurring between 3-6 weeks of age. The life-cycle of coccidia requires time to infect the intestine causing destruction of the mucosal and epithelial lining. The oocytes mature outside the host in warm, moist environments before being consumed, causing infection of a new host. Clinical Signs Diarrhea - Watery, Bloody Depression Weight Loss Prevention/Treatment: Prevention of Coccidiosis is possible by keeping young calves separate from older animals, providing clean water and feed, and dry conditions. Isolation of infected animals is key to preventing transmission. Keeping the pen dry is the most important step a farmer/rancher can take in preventing Coccidiosis. Treatment can have a good impact on reducing secondary disease, and speeding up recovery time. Farmatan has been shown to disrupt the reproductive cycle of Coccidia; and may help strengthen the intestinal wall to prevent infection, in both the cow and calf. Coronavirus Bovine Coronavirus is a ubiquitous, envelope-viral disease, causing respiratory and enteric infection. There are many serotypes for this virus, making it difficult to test for, and create a vaccine. Coronavirus can present as either diarrhea and/or respiratory illness; transmitted through nasal discharge and/or feces. Animal reservoirs continue to spread the disease, and make eradication almost impossible. Clinical disease will likely occur between days 10-14, and present for up to 4 days. Clinical Signs Diarrhea - Watery Nasal Discharge Coughing Prevention/Treatment: Prevention is difficult due to wild animals transmitting the disease. Keeping wild animals out of animal enclosures is essential. Isolation of infected animals is critical to preventing the spread of Coronavirus. Adequate colostrum intake, along with a good vaccination program will help prevent clinical disease. Learn more about the positive effects of Farmtan’s active ingredient on Coronavirus HERE. Cryptosporidium Cryptosporidium Parvum is a single-celled parasite responsible for causing infection in young calves. The infection takes place within the first four weeks of a calves’ life, afterwards immunity has developed within the calf. The parasite is either passed from the cow or spread through infected water sources. Clinical Signs Diarrhea - Watery, Bloody, Mucus present Colic Depression Prevention/Treatment: Good sanitary conditions, especially clean water is essential in preventing transmission of cryptosporidium. Isolation of sick calves will help reduce the effect on the overall herd. There is some good effect of calves given adequate colostrum, however this is likely helping by reducing other pathogenic loads rather than a direct effect on Cryptosporidium, itself. Farmatan fed prior to calving has been shown to disrupt the life-cycle and reduce transmission from the cow. The direct action of Farmatan on the parasite makes it an excellent choice for treating calves. Learn more about the positive effect of Farmatan’s active ingredient HERE.   E Coli Escherichia Coli is a bacterial infection that affects calves within the first week of their life. The bacteria colonize in the lower intestine and produce a toxin. The toxin causes excessive secretion of fluids. The zoonotic disease has special importance in food safety and human health. Colostrum and natural immunity are often not sufficient in preventing infection in cases of high bacterial concentrations. Clinical Signs Diarrhea - Creamy, Yellow Abdominal Pains Fever Vomiting Prevention/Treatment: The best prevention methods for E. Coli include: clean water, dry bedding/environment, isolation of infected animals, and vaccination. Treatment with antibiotics and oral fluids have great benefits in reducing clinical symptoms of the disease. Farmatan has been shown to reduce bacterial load and help prevent infection. Learn more about the positive effects of Farmatan’s active ingredient HERE. Rotavirus Rotavirus in calves is caused by a virus belonging to the Reoviridae family, as a non-envelope RNA virus. Rotavirus is thought to be the most common cause of neonatal diarrhea in calves. The virus tends to affect calves between the age of 1-day-old up to a month, with most cases presenting within the first week of life. Shedding and reinfection can happen in older calves and cows. Clinical symptoms are rarely present after the first month of life; older animals tend to either be carriers or asymptomatic. The majority of herds have some level present, with transmission likely happening during or shortly after birth. Clinical Signs Diarrhea - Pale Yellow, Bloody Dehydrated Dull calves Reluctant to drink Prevention/Treatment: The ideal scenario is to prevent infection through, sanitary facilities (calving barn), outdoor calf housing, and a good vaccination program. Colostrum will provide much needed antibodies, protecting the calf before their immune system is fully developed to combat the disease. Farmatan fed prior to calving can help reduce the pathogen load of the cow, reducing the likelihood of transmission. Farmatan supplemented in the milk has been shown to decrease the virus’ ability to cause infection and clinical disease. The best treatment for calves already presenting clinical disease is to administer oral fluids/electrolytes to rehydrate the calf. Earlier this month, APHIS restricted all Mexican animal commodity imports following the detection of New World screwworm (NWS) in a cow in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas. Mexico’s chief veterinary officer alerted USDA in late November. Dr. Rosemary Sifford, the agency’s chief veterinary officers, stated to media that APHIS’s restrictions will “likely” remain in place through the holidays, with “full resumption of live animal movements” after incremental changes in early 2025. She went on to say that while the U.S. continues to work very closely with Mexico and has agreed to protocols, it will take some time to implement these due to multiple steps needed to resume trade. Additionally, USDA announced $165 million in emergency funding to protect U.S. livestock from NWS, which are fly larvae that infest living tissue and cause infection. Cattle Industry News NCBA Endorsed Disaster Tax Relief Bill, Passes Senate The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) thanked the U.S. Senate for passing the Federal Disaster Tax Relief Act. In addition to providing much needed relief to victims of hurricanes, this legislation would provide tax relief for cattle producers who received payments due to wildfires. Previously, these payments counted as taxable income, meaning producers who already suffered from disasters were hurt again by having their relief payments taxed. The Federal Disaster Tax Relief Act addresses limitations in casualty losses and allows producers to take greater deductions for disaster related losses. Additionally, the bill excludes any payments received due to a “qualified wildfire disaster” from being counted as income for federal tax purposes. The bill also retroactively applies to any wildfire payments received in tax years 2020 through 2025. Producers will have the opportunity to file with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) for relief payments received in these previous years.  The complete bill can be reviewed HERE. Cattlemen Relieved By Court Decision To Halt Corporate Transparency Act Many producers hailed the issuance of a nationwide preliminary injunction blocking the Corporate Transparency Act from being enforced on January 1, 2025. This ruling from the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas protects millions of family farmers and ranchers from onerous reporting requirements imposed by the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN), a division of the U.S. Department of the Treasury. We’ve talked about The Corporate Transparency Act in great detail a few episodes back and remember that every producers’ situation is different, and this information should not be construed as professional advice. EPISODE 214 DETAILS Cattle Industry Top News Headlines, Christmas Gift Ideas, Market Outlooks Top Cattle Industry Headlines U.S. Tightens Import Restrictions After Screwworm Detection The USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has restricted animal imports from Mexico after detecting New World screwworm (NWS) in a cow in Chiapas, Mexico. NWS larvae infest living tissue in warm-blooded animals, causing severe infections. Producers along the U.S.-Mexico border should monitor livestock and pets for signs such as draining wounds or discomfort and report any suspected cases to a veterinarian immediately. To combat the pest's spread, APHIS is deploying sterile flies and intensifying efforts in Central America. "With this detection, we will intensify measures to protect American agriculture," said Dr. Rosemary Sifford, U.S. Chief Veterinary Officer. NWS has recently spread northward due to increased cattle movement, disrupting biological barriers in the region. The USDA continues collaborating with Central American partners to contain and eradicate this threat. Mexico Threatens Trade war If Trump Implements Tariffs Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has criticized President-elect Donald Trump's proposed 25% tariff on Mexican imports, warning it could spark inflation, harm cross-border businesses, and lead to a trade war. Trump announced the tariffs as part of his immigration and drug enforcement policies, citing record illegal crossings. Sheinbaum, in office for just seven weeks, highlighted the risks in a letter to Trump, emphasizing the potential impact on industries like automotive and U.S. meat exports. According to the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF), duty-free trade with Mexico has been crucial for export growth, with U.S. beef exports up 13% and pork exports up 7% year-over-year through September. Sheinbaum urged a meeting with Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to address trade and migration concerns. Meanwhile, Trump defended the tariffs, linking them to stricter immigration and drug policies. New Tariffs May Provide Financial Boost for U.S. Food Producers The Trump administration’s plan to impose a 25% tariff on imports from North American neighbors and China could yield unexpected benefits for U.S. food producers, according to J.P. Morgan analyst Ken Goldman. While tariffs are expected to raise inflation and food prices, retaliatory measures could reduce global demand for U.S. crops like corn, soybeans, and wheat. This decline may lower domestic crop prices, offering cost savings to U.S. producers and potentially boosting profit margins. Goldman noted that U.S. manufacturers, less reliant on imported crops, could see these savings offset the negative impacts of tariffs on other goods. Tyson To Close Beef/Pork Facility In Kansas Tyson Foods announced the closure of its beef and pork non-harvest processing facility in Emporia, Kansas, impacting 809 employees. The plant is set to shut down by February 14, as part of Tyson’s strategy to consolidate operations and boost efficiency. Operations will shift to Tyson’s Holcomb plant near Garden City, according to company officials. Tyson stated it is working with state and local agencies to support affected employees. Despite the closure, Tyson continues to employ over 5,000 team members at its other Kansas facilities. 2025 Hot Culinary Trends Revealed The National Restaurant Association’s 2025 Culinary Forecast highlights East Asian flavors as a major trend. Korean, Vietnamese, and Filipino cuisines ranked highest in the survey of nearly 300 U.S. food industry professionals. These cuisines also dominated the ingredients, flavors, and condiments categories.  “With diners seeking sustainable choices and bold global flavors, restaurants are offering locally sourced ingredients and creative menu options,” said Chad Moutray, Vice President of the Association. By January 1, 2025, thousands of farms must file Beneficial Ownership Information (BOI) with the U.S. Department of Treasury’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) or face severe consequences, including hefty fines and possible jail time. Who Needs to File? Under the Corporate Transparency Act of 2021, businesses must register any “beneficial owner” to help combat money laundering. This law applies to farms structured as: C-corporations S-corporations Limited Liability Companies (LLCs) Specifically, farms with fewer than 20 employees or generating less than $5 million in cash receipts must comply. This requirement impacts the majority of farms, with one report estimating over 230,000 farms are affected. However, government data reveals less than 11% of eligible businesses have filed so far. The Consequences of Non-Compliance Failing to file BOI or neglecting to update records can lead to: Criminal fines up to $10,000 Civil penalties of up to $591 per day Potential felony charges with prison sentences of up to two years The financial and legal risks make it essential for farmers to act promptly. What Should Farmers Do? Farmers uncertain about their filing obligations should immediately consult with a qualified accountant or attorney. These professionals can assess your business structure and ensure compliance with BOI requirements. Don’t Wait Until It’s Too Late The clock is ticking. Take action now to file your BOI by the January 1, 2025, deadline.   Click HERE for Additional Information Top Cattle Industry News Brooke Rollins Tapped To Lead USDA Under President-Elect Trump President-elect Donald Trump has chosen Brooke Rollins, former White House domestic policy adviser and current CEO of the America First Policy Institute, to lead the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). Rollins, a Texas native with strong ties to agriculture and conservative advocacy, previously led the Texas Public Policy Foundation, championing causes like school choice and fossil fuels. If confirmed, she will become the second woman to head the USDA, following Ann Veneman under President George W. Bush. With a $200 billion budget and nearly 100,000 employees, the USDA oversees programs like SNAP, WIC, and school meals. Rollins may also tackle the reauthorization of the massive farm bill, which funds farmer safety nets, rural development, and nutrition programs. Her leadership could drive Trump’s agenda to streamline federal bureaucracy, enforce tariffs, and shape U.S. agricultural policy amid challenges like trade disputes and global competition. October Proves A Monster Month For Retail Meat Sales The average price per pound in the meat department across all cuts and kinds, both fixed and random weight, stood at $4.67 in October 2024, up 1.9% year-on-year. Processed meat prices rose the least in October, at a mere +0.1%. October brought a mix of price movements. Beef and hot dogs increased further, but it was fresh exotic (which includes bison) that had the highest price increase in October, at +6.8% over last year’s October. Several proteins experienced price decreases, including lamb, bacon and processed chicken. Meat department sales were on a roll in October, with fresh meat sales driving 8.0% gains to lead the department to an overall 5.4% increase over October 2023. The five October weeks generated $10.0 billion, with $7.1 billion for fresh meat. While inflation played a role, pound sales increased by 3.4%, also driven by strong gains in fresh meat.   USDA WASDE Report Highlights 2024 Beef Market Trends The USDA’s latest World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) report offers insights into the evolving beef market, signaling continued growth and strong demand. Beef Production Outlook: Higher dressed weights, increased cow slaughter, and unexpected cattle placements in late 2024 have raised beef production projections. These factors, according to the report, "more than offset lower expected steer and heifer slaughter." Cattle Prices Rising: WASDE projects 2024 average cattle prices to reach $186.68/cwt, reflecting strong demand and recent market trends. Prices are expected to remain above $186/cwt through the third quarter of 2025, a notable increase from 2023's average of $175.54. Beef Imports Surge: With strong domestic demand and ongoing cattle herd liquidation, U.S. beef imports are projected to stay robust. After reaching 3.725 billion pounds in 2023, imports are estimated to climb to 4.508 billion pounds in 2024. Shipments from Oceania and South America have exceeded expectations. These trends emphasize the strength of the beef industry despite challenges like herd contraction, showcasing opportunities for producers and exporters alike. Among the most discussed issues are Trump's proposed tariffs, which range from 10% to 20% on all U.S. imports and up to 60% on Chinese imports. These tariffs could have significant consequences for U.S. consumers and meat exporters like Australia and New Zealand, who have capitalized on increased demand following U.S. herd liquidations. Trump's Proposed Tariffs on U.S. Imports Trump’s proposed tariffs could raise prices on imported meat, directly impacting U.S. consumers. Australia and New Zealand, which have become key suppliers of beef to the U.S., would be particularly affected by these policies. Any increase in tariffs could result in reduced competitiveness for these exporters, potentially reducing meat supply in the U.S. market and driving prices higher for consumers.   Industry Reactions and Concerns Nathan Guy, independent chair of the Meat Industry Association of New Zealand, expressed concern in a recent interview. He stated that the industry would need to "breathe through it" over the coming months and adapt as the situation unfolds. Guy warned that new tariffs on New Zealand beef could ultimately "hurt the U.S. consumer even harder because they're going to have to pay more for the [beef] we produce." Similarly, Stefan Vogel, general manager of RaboResearch Australia and New Zealand, highlighted in an interview with Weekly Times Now the potential strain these tariffs could place on meat industry players globally. The ripple effects could extend beyond beef to include lamb and other meats, affecting prices and availability for consumers across various markets.
