Out of the blue, a special episode featuring an interview with writer-director Mike Mills about his new film, C'mon C'mon.
Dan and Kailey are back at Rancho Notorious for a special episode looking ahead to the 2019 New Zealand International Film Festival. This show also includes the complete version of Dan's interview with Incredibly Strange programmer (and first-time feature director) Ant Timpson from this week's episode of At the Movies.
After a long hiatus, Dan and Kailey are back at Rancho Notorious for special episode looking ahead to the 2018 New Zealand International Film Festival.
Dan and Kailey gather at Rancho Notorious for an ad hoc Anzac Day recording. On the agenda is gruesome French body-horror Raw, Jude Law in Paolo Sorrentino's HBO series The Young Pope, an update on the continuing efforts to watch 52 films by women in a calendar year and Dan explains why this will be the last episode for the foreseeable future.
Dan and Kailey are joined by Hayden Frost from the Never Repeats podcast (who are watching every single NZ film from 1977 to the present day) to discuss the new remake of Goodbye Pork Pie and RNZ Checkpoint host John Campbell calls in to talk about his favourite film of recent times, Oscar-nominee Moonlight.
Dan and Kailey debate the new sci-fi blockbuster Passengers (starring Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt) and provide the hottest of hot takes on the just announced Golden Globes. The summer box office winners and losers are also discussed.
Recorded live around the dining table at Rancho Notorious in Silverstream, a collection of the best and brightest gather to break bread and sum up the year in movies. Kailey and Dan are joined by Nine to Noon reviewer Sarah McMullan, actor John Leigh and curator of natural history at Whanganui Regional Museum, Dr Mike Dickison. Host of ABC Radio National's film show, The Final Cut, Jason Di Rosso also calls in to tell us what the Australian year in film has been like.
Kailey is back from her North American trip (and staying on the ranch) so we thought we would squeeze one more episode into season four. Kailey and Dan discuss two new films starring Amy Adams, Arrival and Nocturnal Animals, and Dan interviews the director of Hell or High Water, David Mackenzie, about the making of the modern day Western and working with the great Jeff Bridges. We also have double passes to the new Pedro Almodóvar film Julieta to give away.
Kailey has made it to Vancouver for the final days of this year's Vancouver International Film Festival and joins us live to report on her epic trip around North America. Dan is joined in the studio by Rajeev Mishra from the N to Z of Film to talk about it and other top Kiwi movie podcasts and we have ten double passes to I, Daniel Blake to give away.
Kailey is in Vancouver on the first leg of this year's big trip and she's seen the new film A Light Between Oceans which has only just premiered in Venice. The film stars Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander and was partly shot in New Zealand last year. Dan talks to huge film fan and regular two-word review tweeter Simon Bunckenburg about going to the movies in London.
Kailey is in Canada for the final week of the Toronto International Film Festival where she saw ten films in three days. Meanwhile Dan is joined in Silverstream by Phil Smith to review Pete's Dragon and Steve Newall Skypes in to talk about their survey of the best films of 2016 (so far).
Kailey's contract at NZIFF has finished so she can start reviewing again - so she starts by catching up with the new Ghostbusters. Dan gets back in to the commercial release scene with Laika's Kubo and the Two Strings. And the pair wrap-up this year's NZIFF highlights.
NZIFF director Bill Gosden visits Rancho Notorious for freshly baked muffins and freshly brewed coffee and to chat about this year's event which opens in Auckland on Thursday. Dan also talks to the Incredibly Strange strand programmer Ant Timpson over Skype and interviews Canadian director Atom Egoyan about his new feature Remember which stars Christopher Plummer and Martin Landau.
Newstalk ZB's Darren Bevan bravely steps in to Kailey's role for a week while she works hard to launch the 2016 NZIFF programme. On that exciting subject, Darren, Dan and Doug Dillaman discuss Monday's announcement in detail including trends, highlights and hidden gems. Also, Dan talks to German director Giulio Ricciarelli whose debut feature Labyrinth of Lies was Germany's selection for the Best Foreign Language Oscar this year and arrives in New Zealand this weekend.
Kailey and Dan are back and, in what might be the most self-indulgent episode ever recorded, they try and summarise five weeks of moviegoing in less than an hour, with only essential diversions into topics like doughnuts, volunteer fire-fighting and Hutt Valley real estate.
While Dan moves house and the Ranch is all in boxes, we have a special interim edition of the podcast - the full interview with DocEdge co-director Dan Shanan that was recorded last week for At the Movies.
Kailey and Dan are in the Newtown studio for the last time to review Jon Favreau's new version of Disney's The Jungle Book, along with other recent releases, and Dan chats to Orphans & Kingdoms writer-director Paolo Rotondo about the film which is playing in cinemas now.
In lieu of a standard episode we present a special preview of the 2016 NZIFF Autumn Events programme which starts in Auckland this week. Dan spoke to director Bill Gosden about every film in the programme. You can see video highlights from the interview along with clips from some of the films at rnz.co.nz/widescreen .
Kailey and Dan are joined via a Skype link from the Cayman Islands by our comic book cinematic unvierse expert Andy James. The three of us pick apart the new Batman v Superman film (spoilers!) and try to predict where this story is going in future films. Dan interviews Toni Bestard, co-director of the documentary I Am Your Father, about David Prowse, the actor who played Darth Vader.
Kailey and Dan are joined by Chris Hormann, President of the Wellington Film Society, to talk about this year's programme and the health of the film society movement across New Zealand. Dan interviews Temuera Morrison and Akuhata Keefe about their roles in the new film Mahana, and Kailey reviews The Lady in the Van and Three Wise Cousins.
