This podcast features a live set by local improviser and concert organizer Michael Rosenstein. This is a rare solo set by Michael, who often performs in ensembles, regularly collaborating with musicians such as Howard Martin and Jesse Kenas Collins. In this set, Michael works with an assortment of homemade instruments, using everyday objects, contact mics, springs, a banjo, and amplified surfaces, as well as field recordings. Born in Argentina and classically trained as a pianist, Andrea is one of the most extraordinary figures in the New England noise and experimental music scenes. Her performances are intense, ferocious, and extraordinary. She runs a fantastic experimental music series in Salem, MA called Sonorium. She plays two sets here an intense “noise piano” piece and a more traditional (for her) set. There is a few seconds of silence separating the two pieces. . When the Italian duo Tumble (percussionist Andrea Belfi and electronic musician Attila Faravelli) came to Boston in March 2011, the plan was for them to do a special live set on Rare Frequency in addition to their concert at the Spectacle loft. Due to a scheduling error, however, the radio set never materialized; however, the Andrea and Attila kindly provided a live recording of their performance at Spectacle. This is that recording. Enjoy!
