What do you do on the days when you look in the mirror and not only don't like your body, but you loathe it…and you're triggered to want to "do something" about it like cut out carbs, skip breakfast, or download the Weight Watchers app for the 11th time. If there's one thing I know for sure it's this: Hating and berating your body isn't a pathway to making peace with it. On the other hand, you don't need to force yourself to "love your body" either. You do need to choose to respond to these bad body image days differently though. And it starts with choosing to RESPECT your body. In this episode, I'm breaking down what body respect looks like when your body image sucks, you're desperate to lose weight, terrified of gaining weight, or you're tempted to throw away all the sugar and processed food in our house and go back to "clean" eating. Improving your body image doesn't mean waking up every morning obsessed with how gorgeous you look. It's much less glamorous: feeding your body, wearing clothes that fit, going to the doctor, moving in ways that feel supportive, and refusing to bully yourself. If you're working on intuitive eating, body acceptance, healing your relationship with food, letting go of diet culture, or making peace with your body, this episode will give you concrete actions you can do (and things NOT to do) on bad body image days. Episode Highlights How quickly body image can send you right back into old diet-y behaviors that make things worse. What NOT to do when you're having a bad body image day, you feel desperate to lose weight, and you feel super uncomfortable in your own skin. The difference between body positivity, body neutrality, and body respect. (Hint: body positivity isn't the answer here - and I'll explain why.) Practical ways to care for your body even when you don't feel confident in it. What it looks like to pursue nutrition, movement, sleep, medical care, and other health behaviors from a place of self-care instead of self-punishment Today's Wellness Woo is acupressure insoles for weight loss. We're talking about the moves you can make NOW that support your health while also helping you build more trust with food and your body. What does it actually mean to have a healthy relationship with food and your body? Is it eating nutritious foods most of the time? Never overeating? Loving your body? Not caring about your weight? And how do you know when your attempts to be "healthy" are actually starting to work against you? In this episode, I'm joined by Donna Friedman, a licensed professional counselor and eating disorder specialist who brings a unique perspective through her clinical expertise, her own lived experience with an eating disorder, and her experience as a parent. We talk about what a genuinely healthy relationship with food and body looks like, where the line falls between dieting, disordered eating, and an eating disorder, and some of the behaviors around food, weight, and exercise that our culture considers completely "normal" but may actually be cause for concern. Donna also shares why letting go of intentional weight loss can feel so threatening, what people misunderstand about body image, why changing your body doesn't necessarily change how you feel about it, and the less obvious signs that your pursuit of health may be costing you more than you realize. If you've ever wondered, "Okay, but what am I actually trying to get TO with intuitive eating and body image work?" this conversation will help you see what a healthier, more peaceful relationship with food and your body can actually look like in real life. Episode Highlights: -What a genuinely healthy relationship with food and your body actually looks like and how to know what you're working toward beyond simply "not dieting." -Where the line falls between dieting, disordered eating, and an eating disorder, including behaviors our culture praises as "healthy" that may actually be concerning. -Why changing your body doesn't necessarily improve body image, and why letting go of intentional weight loss can feel so threatening even when you know dieting isn't working. We live in a world that is completely obsessed with weight loss, thinness, health and wellness…but we've completely lost the plot. From the glorification of extreme thinness that we are seeing everywhere right now, to the repeated message we've received that weight loss is good and weight gain is bad - it's so hard to embrace and accept our bodies as they are meant to be. And on the back end of all of this we are seeing a crisis: eating disorders. People are literally dying in their pursuit of thinness. Others are suffering from years or decades of a battle with an eating disorder that tells them they're never good enough. My guest today, Morgan DiPrimo, is on a mission to change this. A filmmaker, speaker, and eating disorder advocate, Morgan has conducted more than 400 interviews across six continents with leading clinicians, researchers, policymakers, educators, nonprofit leaders, families, and individuals with lived experience. Her work explores the intersection of mental health, media, technology, healthcare, and culture, with a focus on identifying systemic gaps and creating solutions. Morgan is currently producing Mind Over Mirror, a feature-length documentary examining the growing eating disorder crisis, the impact of social media and emerging technologies, treatment barriers, physician education gaps, and the future of prevention. Through the documentary and a planned national summit, she aims to bring together leaders from medicine, research, policy, education, media, and lived experience to drive meaningful change. Whether you personally have an eating disorder or not, this is an incredibly important conversation that you NEED to tune into (and share with others). Episode Highlights: -What Morgan learned from interviewing over 400 experts and people with lived experience regarding eating disorders and our relationship with food and our bodies. -How social media impacts our perception of our bodies and influences our behaviors. -Wellness that seem helpful on the surface, but are actually dangerous. Your intuitive eating journey is going to be a LOT harder if you're constantly battling the urge and temptation to go back on another diet. And look, I get it…healing your relationship with food is HARD and diet culture can be so convincing. In this episode, I'm breaking down the 4 steps that I use every single week with my clients to help them move past wanting to go back to dieting - so that they can keep their momentum moving forward towards becoming an intuitive eater. I'll be breaking down a case study of a client who went from bingeing multiple times every week for decades of her life…to not being able to remember the last time she binged because it had been so long - and how she got there. Episode Highlights -The 4 steps that my clients take that allows them to walk past the bathroom scale without feeling the desire to get on it "just to check" after they eat out at a restaurant the night before. -Specific examples and ideas for what YOU can do immediately to apply each of these 4 core steps we're discussing. -How to get out of the "messy middle" and "no man's land" in between dieting vs intuitive eating where you feel like you're not successfully doing anything well with food or your health. Today's Wellness Woo is "sugar feeds cancer." Resources Mentioned: - Jump inside Stepping Off The Dieting Rollercoaster! Read the full episode show notes here.
