Reclaiming Jane

If you’ve ever felt like you’re not “allowed” to like Jane Austen – whether because her work is too white, too academic, or too straight – we’ve been there. And this podcast is for you. Each episode, we tackle a new piece of the Austen canon to give you the historical context of each work, draw connections to pop culture, and discover new ways of interpreting old texts. There’s something in Jane Austen’s novels for everyone. Whether you’re a long-time Austen devotee or have never read a word of her writing, we hope you'll join us in Reclaiming Jane.

Evelyn: "The Audacity"

Jack & Alice: "Heartbreak is One Thing..."

Our next entry into Austen’s Juvenilia takes us a few years down the road into her teenagehood with “Jack and Alice,” a wild tale of neighborly debauchery, light stalking, and eventual murder (many such cases). We’ll also be talking colonialism and drag, because we have a brand and we intend to stick to it. I think for the rankings of love-interests, you need subcategories: self-proclaimed suitors (e.g. John Thorpe, Mr. Collins), characters that seem at first like real suitors but aren't (e.g. Willoughby, Wickham, Frank Churchill), and the ones the heroines end up marrying. I think Crawford is objectively awful (his goal, remember, is to make Fanny fall in love with him so he can break her heart), but can seem less awful because in the other choice is Edmund Bertram.

When I reread Northanger Abbey a few years ago I was struck by just how familiar John Thorpe was. We have all met his modern incarnation: the self-centered dude who doesn't hear the word "no" and doesn't understand how a woman could reject such a nice guy as himself.

FWIW, "Benwick" is pronounced "Bennick." The English do that kind of thing a lot with names: there's a pronunciation that you just have to know. My favorite is "Featherstonhaugh," which is pronounced (wait for it...) "Fanshaw."

I've now read a large chunk of the P&P/Parent Trap fanfic, and it's quite good! The author seems to really know the source material and adapts it well to a modern setting. She does seem to hew closer to "Lottie and Lisa" (the book on which Parent Trap was based) than to the movies.

Six degrees of Benedict Cumberbatch: he and Jon Lee Miller starred in a London stage play of Frankenstein (they played the parts Frankenstein and the monster, switching parts from show to show). Miller has played both Mr. Knightly (in the 2009 BBC adaptation of Emma) and Edmund Bertram (in the 1999 Mansfield Park). He also apparently played one of Fanny Price's little brothers (not William) in a 1983 adaptation of MP.
