Description
Recovery Advocate Network (RAN) was founded to address the staggering and alarming disparity in resource availability for individuals suffering from mental health disorders, processing disorders, substance abuse, trauma healing, and sexual identity challenges. RAN strives to "Break the Stigma" by educating the community about mental health challenges and wellness.

RAN's Vision: RAN envisions a world where individuals with mental health challenges receive comprehensive and effective treatment without worrying about financial burdens to themselves, or their families, all without the stigmas often present in society.
Until that vision becomes a reality, RAN will continue to work to identify financial alternatives for treatment and continuously educate families, community members, and employers regarding the emotional, functional, and natural needs and abilities of people with mental health challenges.
Recovery Advocate Network is excited to join the podcast community. I am your host, Ange, and I am grateful for your support of our mission. I welcome you to join us in building a world where individuals with mental health challenges receive comprehensive and effective treatment without worrying about financial burdens to themselves or their families or the stigma often associated with it.
Until that vision becomes a reality, together, we will work to identify financial alternatives for treatment and continuously educate families, community members, and employers regarding the emotional, functional, and natural needs and abilities of people with mental health challenges.
We encourage you to join the fight today.

Welcome back to Coffee and Conversation's "Between the Lines" Blog Club Series. My name is Joshua Young, and this is episode #99, an exciting moment for us, as next week we will hit a major milestone with our 100th episode. To celebrate, we have a special treat in store for our audience! Several members of the RAN team will join us to share their experiences volunteering at RAN, and we'll take some time to reflect on the journey and the future of Coffee and Conversation. For today's episode, my dear friend Patricia Rae will read a blog post written by me from an anonymous perspective, entitled "Grieving What Never Was: The Complex Loss of an Abusive Parent." Patricia is probably best known as an actor and producer, but she wears many hats; activist, artist, healer, painter, podcaster, and humanitarian. She has been a recurring reader for us here at RAN, and her contributions are invaluable. Some of you may recognize Patricia from her impressive body of work. Her first feature film role was in the cult classic Swimfan, and she earned critical acclaim for her performance in the Oscar-nominated film Maria Full of Grace. She's also appeared in The Big Wedding, sharing the screen with legends like Robert De Niro and Diane Keaton. Her television credits are just as noteworthy, including appearances in NCIS: Los Angeles, Blue Bloods, Law & Order, The Mentalist, and many more. Her first long recurring role was as Judge Abigail Delgado on the CBS TV series All Rise. In addition to her work in film and TV, Patricia hosts her own podcast, Believe This, where she and her co-host debate hot-topic issues from their differing perspectives. You can listen to Believe This on any major podcast platform. We want to take a moment to express our gratitude to Patricia for her passionate, genuine, and dramatic delivery in her volunteer work here at RAN. Patricia, thank you—your dedication is truly inspiring. We are honored to have you with us for this journey. She believes understanding brain chemistry and individual differences is key to guiding children to become their best selves. Nellie's mission is to help parents raise the next generation of confident and empowered women. In this conversation, Nellie Hardin discusses the importance of understanding and knowing one's worth, especially for adolescents and adults. Welcome back to Coffee and Conversation with Recovery Advocate Network.  I am your host, Ange, and I welcome you to Episode number 83. Today's guest is Steve Wolfson, a writer, filmmaker, health consultant, and dentist. While Steve was in dental school, he discovered his favorite patients were children and loved to tell young patients stories to help relax them during their dental visits. However, during dental school, Steve became disappointed with the dental profession, mainly concerned with people who could afford treatment. That's when he discovered a small group of public health dentists interested in providing dental health care available to everyone. Eventually, Steve accepted a job in Canada at Saskatchewan Dental Plan, a program providing no-fee dental care to all children in school dental clinics. This program was recognized as the best children's dental program in the world and received numerous visits from people from many countries. Unfortunately, when a new government was elected, the dental profession convinced them to shut down this program and once again only provided care to those who could afford it. Steve decided to set off in a new direction, parting ways with dentistry, as Steve's wife coined the term "recovery dentist" to describe Steve's journey after dentistry. Steve began a freelance career in writing children's books, making documentary films, health consulting, and teaching. He developed programs for and taught at the First Nations University of Canada and eventually became the Dean for three years. He also wrote and published his first book, "Monster Cheese," which made its way into hundreds of classrooms to be read to young children. Not only was he creating books, but he was also busy being a filmmaker. Many of the films he developed focused on the challenges of providing health care in rural, low socioeconomic countries. Unfortunately, once again, the same government that shut down the Saskatchewan Dental Plan returned to power and wiped out the film industry of Saskatchewan. So, Steve continued to publish three more children's books. He is now focusing on and learning how hypnosis and mindfulness can help people strengthen their rehabilitation efforts and maintain a healthy lifestyle. In this episode, Steve discusses his passion for storytelling through filmmaking and writing children's books. He shares how his interest in dentistry and filmmaking led him to work on dental projects in Mozambique and create documentaries about the country's healthcare system. He also talks about his journey as a children's book author, starting with his book 'Monster Cheese' and his latest book 'Auntie Jane Knits Up a Storm,' which explores the themes of grief and healing. Our conversation highlights the importance of storytelling and cross-cultural experiences in understanding the world more deeply. Steve discusses distilling complex emotions into concise words for children's books. He shares the stories behind his books 'Filbert, the Lonely Flamingo' and 'Auntie Jane Knits Up A Storm'. He emphasizes the importance of reading children's books with adults to foster bonding and understanding of emotions. He also explores the potential for older adults to find comfort and connection in children's stories. The conversation touches on the healing power of art, the need for accessible mental health care, and the history of mental institutions.
