Okay. This one’s a doozy.
It’s as if they took the incoherent rambling of Eddie Vedder and forced a first-year film school student (at DeVry) to make a movie with his roommate he just met. This film is part Idiocracy, part Sex Drive and part 30 Minutes or Less. It’s so not good, that the Internet cannot even decide if it was released in 1996 or 1997. Look at the strings keeping everyone up in the air!

We go back in time, to a time before marriage. Brendan & Alex wax philosophical on the historic, lost tapes 2.0 episode. We discuss happenings-of-life, a ice-bathtub and awful reviews.

It’s Good Friday 2024! Do you know where your children are? If not, who cares? Drown your sorrows by listening to this episode of Refined 90’s Cinema. This week, the boys are back for a slapstick late-nineties classic Mousehunt. The mouse was a metaphor for life in the post-economic collapse world. Go listen to Watch Out! by Alexisonfire. Good stuff.

We did a whole trilogy. Three whole episodes. And, because of Brendan’s disorganization and moving-related chaos, we’ve lost the files. This was part of our summer trilogy with horror movies. We also had a Jim Carry trilogy recorded, but we did not clap to start recording and Brendan cannot seem to find the right files and sync things-up properly. But, we have this new episode to tide us over until we go to a soft-relaunch for the second part of 2024. We rip on this masterpiece of post-comedy-horror. All the while, Syrone, Sirrone? Oh! Dubs, LO-J and the Talkin’ join us on our journey of self-discovery. Plot twist, the power was inside of each of us all along. This episode is full of adult language. Terrible. Somebody get this man a toothpick! Do they look alike?. And another thing, Adobe Audition takes a while to export when you have a lot of rack effects. Please let us know how we can off-load this processing and mix down the shows faster at the email address below. Email? Ever heard of it? It is an Internet technology where words and phrases can be sent in text form to another person’s computer instantly. Too much snark on this episode of Refined 90’s Cinema.

Listeners be advised: this movie is ridiculous and explicit.
Welcome to Canada. We dish about Niagara Falls, the end of the summer and whether BDubs is real food. This low-budget slasher flick has it all: sex, drugs and rock and roll. The pacing is slow, but the weird sex scene keeps us interested until the dystopian-trash-helmet activates and we see the man behind the helmet is actually a middle-aged male voyeur who is wearing masks and having a grand ’ol time™. We turn into Howard Stern and make sexual jokes. All the while, the robot guy is having his sad sex-life a cameraman creeps in the distance and Shades is meditating and doing ecstasy. Then, the creepy-guy comes back a few times and then dies. Then some other useless shit happens. Is this thing on? I hope not. Check this out,

Alex and Brendan get into a steaming pile of a film. 1994’s Mixed Nuts was both hated by critics and forgotten by the public and our collective unconscious. It’s definitely not a Christmas classic. It’s a badly written theatre play with a jumbled mess of a plot. Brendan references the L. Ron Hubbard series of Last Podcast on the Left episodes.Alex sings the praises of Xbox Games Pass for the offspring of the IBM personal computer. The first 20 minutes of the movie were funny with the rapping elevator woman.
And then it got terrible. We voted it the worst movie ever. We sound like a couple of Valley Girls on this episode of Refined 90’s Cinema.

It’s time to morph into a podcast listener and get those headphones powered up!
Alex is the Power Rangers™ fountain of knowledge. He gives us the inside-scoop on all the colours (even the white/green one). Then we comment on the special effects, the goo, the toxic ooze and the mat paintings.
It was a voyage like Laserhawk (1993) with tons of bad SFX. Join us, as Alex goes back in-time to relive a childhood memory. We totally forgot about reviews on this episode of Refined 90’s Cinema.

A very quick, quick hits. We watch an episode of 1994’s Dinosaurs. A sitcom family with very questionable morals. We try to figure it out, using our present-day knowledge.

An instant classic Refined 90’s episode in the making.
We’ve got fissures, Elden Ring, a Pokemon corner, Chianti, stupid cereal boxes, and (oh yeah) also a movie podcast. Alex sees a magical chest that resembles one he already has in his office. The discussion then devolved into a confusing mess of confusion. We get our Clinton’s mixed up. Then, the plot fixes itself.

The boys watch the psychological-crime-thriller Seven (1995). It’s dark to start and basically stays exactly that way throughout. The detective duo of not-Denzel and not-Pacino go through the fictional city of not-NY and do some detective stuff. Alex sings a few songs. For all of this movie’s thrills, it really did not leave much to be discussed.

After another hiatus, we are back! We couldn’t be cops and we definitely couldn’t be negotiators or people with guns. Samuel has one chance, one opportunity to not go to prison for killing his partner (we think). He’s gotta make a deal with only twenty-four herrrrssszzzz.
He wants answers and the only way to get them is with gratuitous focus pulls and Paul Giamatti. The swat whatever team is doing everything they can to keep the FBI out and keep the boat afloat. Turns out all the dirty cops were in on it the whole time: pension funds, internal affairs, crooked cops, fishing trawlers and the hidden identity of Ebaum, this movie has it all. Listen to us explain-away the plot.
A+ for intensity on this fast paced episode of Refined 90’s Cinema.

It was a simpler time, it was a better time. When we roamed free, we had five television channels. Brendan and Alex misremember how terrible Detroit-area law commercials really were in the 90s. Then, we rediscover a past love, The Guillory Family by re-enacting their famous Slap the Rice Bag: A Venom Fan Fiction video, poorly.

We begin this Christmas special by eating Sweet Chili Heat Doritos®. As all podcasters should annoy their audiences by eating crunchy foods whilst recording.
We are back in the studio for one final episode of 2021. Shot in Oakville, a suburb of Toronto, Ontario, this suburban comedy takes us back to the era of Mercury Topaz’s and Denny’s.
Apparently, Timothy is a great actor with which to work. Did he gain weight for the film? We don’t know. The movie flashes us by, like our youth. Alex hates Neal’s overbearing personality. Neal gets coal for Xmas because he hates him!
Happy Holidays everyone from all of us here at Refined 90’s Cinema.

We continue our big conversation into Big Tech™ about how Google will enslave us all! Brendan recommends KeepassXC (for Linux or OSX) or Keepass (for Windows) to save all of your passwords with a master password. You can even sync them across devices like your phone or laptop. And another thing is to use two factor–2FA (or multi-factor) authentication.
Dale then pivots to the Jenna Marbles story-time time and we lament jerks being toxic on the Internet. Alex asks, “Have the times changed?” “Can you have a friend online?” “Will they still be his friend?” “Can we quench that need to be right online?” Dale delivers some wisdom.
Alex talks some more about anime and tries to convince Brendan to like anime. Then Dale and Alex try and define the history of anime and manga. Dale talks One-Punch-Man who is obviously a man who only punches once before falling over and dying.
Dale’s theories include :
(1) There is a Metallica song for everyone,
(2) There is an anime for everyone to love,
(3) Farts are always funny.
Dale’s 90’s favourite production is King of the Hill. Dale and Brendan love Seinfeld and Alex is a Friends person. Which primetime 90’s production defined your personality? For movies, Dale recommends Fear (1996) with Marky Mark and Heat (1995) and finally, The Negotiator.
Alex and Dale then gush about The Thing (1982) and then many more wonderful movies. Dale soliloquies his reasoning for loving The Lighthouse by simply asking yourself, “What are the strengths of this film?” Then, Brendan talks about something stupid and we move on. MOVE ON !
We have a Part 3 coming up next time on Refined 90’s Cinema!

We have a very special guest in the studio. This episode, our graphic designer and CAD aficionado friend Dale joins us for many hours of rambunctious ramblings. We talk about anime, cool but sad webcomics, domain names (Hover shout-out) and many other things on this first of a multi-part series.
It’s a slice of life on this part 1 (of 2 or 3) sub-podcast. Our regularly scheduled programming will be back soon.
