Description

Season 3 - Welcome to the ultimate rediscovery of Van Halen’s most controversial album.
At the outset, we represent a good spectrum of views: Wolfie is 100% no opinion on the album; Scott leans more positive but is in the middle and has some dislikes; and Chaz is … appreciative as a student of Edward Van Halen, and empathetic to his artistic cause, but not a big fan of the final output overall. To put it mildly. How Many Say Why is all they could be heard muttering to themselves, in a sea-shanty sort of sway. How Many Say Why? How Many Say Why?

Episode 6. Dirty Water Dog featuring the founding editor of UltimateClassicRock.com, Matthew Wilkening. Join Scotzo, Wolfie and Chaz as they take in all of Matthew's stories of Van Helen interviews and insider status during the time the album was being made. Having spoken directly with the band on several occasions, he has a lot to share. Matthew is also a fan and his appreciation of Van Halen shows he's a fan of all iterations of the band, and someone who can appreciate an artists more challenging works. We talk at length about the article and interview he wrote and published at the time, which you can read here. We also get some insider stories of being at the record label for the "preview parties", and how you tell a label exec that something "isn't quite" what you'd expected to hear from Van Halen? So we listen to the studio version of Dirty Water Dog, then Scotzo has us endure the live version to make a Monrovian point...you can see that video here. Ultimately, Matthew's wide-ranging musical background with UltimateClassicRock.com lead us on some pretty cool digressions. And we also get a taste of some of Greg "Wolfie" Wolfe's live shows in addition to his "never-heard-this-before" impression of the track, and the Van Halen III Redux version. Remember, Van Halen III Redux is the work of Seaside Pod Review, Tom Petty Project, and Ultimate Catalog Clash podcast host Kevin Brown and producer Scott D. S3. Episode 5. From Afar

Episode 5. From Afar featuring Gary Cherone Superfan Alyssa, creator and curator of the Extreme Fan Page ExtremeTakeUsAlive on Twitter. Join Scotzo, Wolfie and Chaz as they take Alyssa along on their journey through this next track off Van Halen III. Alyssa's passion for Gary's artistry, and her Extreme knowledge and appreciation of Van Halen take the guys to a place no one expected Chaz to end up. Is that a good thing or bad? We get a lot of inside scoop on Gary's side projects, like his Who cover band, and his work with his brother, and what it's like to be in the same room with him and his energy. Alyssa's adoration of Gary is endearing, and it soften's some of the sharper edges in what's always a "trash Gary" party! (Apologies to no one.) And this is the stage in the show's evolution where we think people may be listening, so we invoke our right to make statements and issue our new call "C'mon Wolfie!" and we're not talkin' our Wolfie. As always, the most important constituent - what did Wolfie think of the track and the Van Halen III Redux version? Remember, Van Halen III Redux is the work of Seaside Pod Review, Tom Petty Project, and Ultimate Catalog Clash podcast host Kevin Brown and producer Scott D. Episode 4. One I Want featuring CJ Chilvers, author of The Van Halen Encyclopedia I, II and coming soon...III! Saddle up with Scotzo, Wolfie and Chaz as they take CJ along on their journey through this next track off Van Halen III. CJ's knowledge and insider status are beyond most mere mortal Van Halen fans. Our hosts go deep with CJ, uncovering factoids and tid-bits that will have you shaking your damn head. What was the chatter on the Van Halen list serve at the time VHIII was coming into being? What happened to the music video for One I Want? What happened between Eddie Van Halen and Geddy Lee, does anyone really know? We get to the bottom of what was going on in the Van Halen camp at the time and dig into what was described as "just a bunch of verses” and a "convoluted" song, their words, not ours. Most importantly - what did Wolfie think of the track and did the Van Halen III Redux version change any hearts and minds on One I Want? Episode 3. Without You featuring Corey Morrissette and Mark Camire from And The Podcast Will Rock. Join Scotzo, Wolfie and Chaz as they take Mark & Corey through the paces with the first divisive track off Van Halen III, the first single from the album, Without You. Most commonly known as the "most Van Halen" track on the album in that it was recorded by Eddie as a demo when they first hooked up with Gary, and we know for historical fact that all of the members of the band contributed to the final recorded work. Does it live up to the Can Halen legacy? Are there parts of this song that could be considered "all-time great" or "classic" Van Halen? Only your ears will tell. And did Scott and Kev do a job making this song more of a "banger", we find out as our co-hosts take the first spin through the Van Halen III Redux version after listening to the original. Did they make a new nugget for Van Halen fans to slap some sauce on, or did we just toss another order of boneless wings in the trash? You be the judge - as it should be. Van Halen III Redux is the work of Seaside Pod Review, Tom Petty Project, and Ultimate Catalog Clash podcast host Kevin Brown and producer Scott D. Monroe, our own Scotzo. S3. Episode 2. Neworld

2024-07-0902:04:57

Episode 2. Neworld: from the official show notes of show creative Scott D. Monroe...is essentially our "intro" episode with just the three hosts, heavy on historical context, each hosts’ memories of the VH3 album and the tour; and overall opening thoughts on the album/era, and whether each host is open to changing their mind by the end of the podcast... Who the fuck knows if that's going to happen. With clowns to the left, and jokers to the right, and diversions and digressions galore, How Many Say Why? Listeners of And The Podcast Will Rock will come to hear this as a continuation of a discussion started on that podcast's live show recap of Van Halen III, which doubled as Episode 1. of RVH3. In fact, it established an opinion baseline (not bass line Wolfie!) for Scotzo and Chaz to match or amend over time with this deeper-dive extension of what's begun on ATPWR. We're listening even deeper to this record so that you don't have to. On this, the "bastard's maiden voyage" away from the CMPU mothership and the ATPWR broadcast stream, we revisit prior Regarding...Series themes: Redux. Seaside Pod Review, Tom Petty Project, and Ultimate Catalog Clash podcast host Kevin Brown graces us with a Redux version of VHIII that's lighter, leaner, and in some circles a means to salvaging the disc a producer in a different circumstance might have produced. Ahem. Season 3. of the Regarding...Series goes where no Fonzarelli has gone before, jumping the pod and crossing streams into the depths of the CMPU with Mark Camire and the genuine article himself, the real Corey Morrissette. Join us as Scotzo and Chaz help the boys at And The Podcast Will Rock put Van Halen III to the final discussion on their venerated podcast. (Wolfie is nothing if not integrus, staying home to maintain his VHIII virginity.) The backstory - as Corey and Mark wind down their listen through the 128-song Van Halen catalog, Van Halen III was a hold-out album, with the final cut, Josephina, being spun off the random spinning wheel of tracks with just 5 tracks left to spin. Their show wrap-up and ranking of the overall album is the Regarding...VHIII jumping-off point, with this historic episode establishing the baseline for where Chaz and Scotzo came into the season, fresh off a track-by-track listen with the ATPWR crew and their live audience. A few twists and turns reveal one of the wildest scoring and ranking cluster-of-phuchs, the likes of which you've only ever heard in the utterances of idiots and loons obsessed with a record that was released 26 years ago. "How many say why?", as Mr. Paltrowitz asked. We endeavor to answer that from here... This is where the season starts, before we fall back off our jet skis and get below the waves into our deep-dive, track-by-track exploration of our very own Van Halen III Redux, masterminded by Scotzo and engineered by Kevin Brown. We'll listen to that, along with the original album cut, over the next season, with another panel discussion at the end. Where will Wolfie come out on all this? Will Scotzo and Chaz change their minds from what you hear tonight? Only time, and our listening to Van Halen III so you, fair listener, don't have to, will tell. Season three, Regarding...Van Halen III, is going to be a twister in your ear and rubber hose up the nose of preconceived notions...and bass lines, Wolfie... S2. Episode 10. Eclipse

S2. Episode 10. Eclipse

2024-04-2101:25:48

The madness comes in for a landing with this, the tenth episode of Regarding Roger. Masters of Digression Chaz and Wolfie go all out in this drain-bamaged diversionary listen-through of the epic classic rock radio track Eclipse, the last track on Dark Side of the Moon. Redux follows suit, and thus we conclude the heavy lifting of season two, listening to Dark Side of The Moon Redux for the listener, so the listener doesn’t have to. Join our hosts as they meander through Spotify rankings of Pink Floyd versus so many other artists we forget how many are covered. Chaz raves on and on about Live From Daryl’s House, the internet show of Daryl Hall, and convinces Wolfie to get hooked in with Daryl and his friends like Smokey Robinson, Sammy Hagar, Allen Stone, Fitz and the Tantrums, Tommy Shaw, Rick Nielson, Kenny Loggins, CeeLo Greene, Darius Rucker, Train, Rob Thomas, Joe Walsh, Howard Jones, Chromeo, KT Tunstall, Ben Folds, Grace Potter, The Blind Boys of Alabama, Toots and the Maytals, Nick Lowe, the Bacon Brothers…and so many more. Wax nostalgic with Chaz about having Kyra Sedgwick walk across his blanket at a Bacon Brothers concert. Ah, the memories.  And yes, we get back to listening to the redux version of Eclipse. We wrap up this listen season with comparisons to season one, what Lulu had going for it that Dark Side of the Moon Redux did not. If there had been more coverage, better press, more content, and greater context shared by the artist would it have been better received? If Roger hadn’t tried to sing, if he hadn’t added poetry and voiceovers, would it still be something you can listen to? The main question persists…why Roger, why? When the hosts start pining for the improvisational stylings of Metallica and Lou Reed, you know it’s about time to wrap it up. Rather, the guys draw it out, going further out on a Rocket to Uranus than they ever have before. New heights in digressionary diversion and pointless nonsense, this episode really captures the essence of our final adjudication of Dark Side of the Moon Redux. Hearing Eclipse delivered with a James Hetfield staccato is worth the price of admission alone. We wrap it up with a bow – here’s the message: life ain’t all dark. That’s the big epiphany of this album – that and we’ve determined that the answer to life, the universe and everything really is 42. Thanks, Roger, here’s your towel. Now…what would Daryl do? Roger – listen to Daryl, he is the king of Redux. Find out for yourself – tune in at Live From Daryl’s House. 🎸As always, Chaz & Wolfie listen so you don't have to. S2. Episode 9. Brain Damage

2024-04-0901:25:31

In this break-one-off episode, hosts Chaz and Wolfie find some satisfaction and forego the courtesy flush while listening to the track Brain Damage from both the original and the Redux version of Pink Floyd's iconic "Dark Side of the Moon."  What a relief as the Digressionary Duo bust off some pent-up cheek-sneaks and bask in the after-glow of a number that ain't such a stinker after all. There's only one nasal cavity like Roger's, and he proves it's still his main instrument on this one. A tasty little track, but is it good enough to finally answer the question - Why Roger, why? - that's too easy and bollocks if our hosts know... 🎸As always, Chaz & Wolfie listen so you don't have to. In this thought-provoking, WTF episode of Regarding...Roger, hosts Chaz Charles and Greg "Wolfie" Wolfe dive deep into the track Any Colour You Like from both the original and the Redux version of Pink Floyd's iconic "Dark Side of the Moon." The digressionary duo embarks on a lively and detailed analysis of the new interpretations and additions Roger Waters has made to the classic instrumental piece, making time to analyze the lyrics as well...as they should. They explore Waters' commentary on themes such as nationality, sexuality, and the symbolism behind flags, tying these to the current societal context with references to Ukraine and the rainbow flag, and all that implies. The episode is enriched with high-brow, speculative humor about Waters' intentions, playfully questioning the necessity and execution of this Redux project. In other words - Why Roger, why? As Chaz and Wolfie trip over themselves navigating this album they maintain a balance of reverence for the original work and a critical eye on the new layers added by Waters. They deserve your patronage and acclaim for having gotten this far in the challenge of interpreting the always cryptic newly added lyrics...this time pondering the potential meanings behind references to modern technology like CAT scans and electron microscopes. The episode not only serves as an entertainingly excruciating exploration of Waters' latest artistic endeavor but also serves as a glaring reminder that still, we ask...Why Roger, why? The WTF Episode. It was inevitable it would come to this. Chaz and Wolfie have endured quite a lot in the making of this podcast, and at a point, it becomes necessary to...go on a digression. Oh, and that's gonna be late... 🎸As always, Chaz & Wolfie are on the case digging into the what of this why...wtf?? Always offering their unique, boneless insights, as only they can. Another heroic and historic episode of the podcast that listens so you don't have to...with a magical and golden crossing of the podcast streams complete with Alan "Schatz" Schatzberg from RushRash, and our hosts crashing Schatz' gig before teleporting his azz back into this show. The streaming circle is complete with this wiz-bang mash up unlike any episode of the Regarding...Series before it. Then listen as they listen to the train wreck that is the redux version. Mercifully, a little shorter than the original...but that's because there was not much to add to such a brilliant composition and collaboration with Richard Wright. St. Richard, perhaps. S2. Episode 6. Money

Roger! Get back, I’m alright Jack, keep your hands off my Dark Side of the Moon! Fakk, Chaz and Wolfie get beat over the head with some heavyweight add-on to the song Money…where the saxophone solo and the guitar solos go…and more than ever we ask…why Roger, why? Join our cohosts as they dig on listening to the entirely unchanged original epic track, on headphones, with plenty of mints on hand…cool baby, and waxing nostalgic for Gordon Gecco and a message the guys don’t think they missed the first time, and a new message that leaves us wondering, even more, let us say that again, not to be rundant, but to be perfectly clear, we'd still really like to know, “why Roger, why?” We digress and go on...we discover the origins of the lyrics Roger stole from the London Underground, and listen to him blather on about how he has a demo of the music he wrote for Money, in addition to those lyrics that, you know, he wrote. He makes that clear again, and leaves us a little torn when it comes to the music. If you were at a cocktail party, and you heard the music come on, without the vocal, you might pause, recognize it as Money, and go on with you conversation, enjoying the reminessing sounds in the background, but fakk, he does his best Tom Waites, and...well...it's "why Roger, why?" But...it’s the COVID for episode, and there are plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing, what the hell is in those mints… Grab your caviar and kick back for another fat-cat tongue-lashing and stern warning to choose more noble motives to guide your choice of vocation…cause they still ain’t givin’ none away. 🎸As always, Chaz & Wolfie are on the case digging into the what of this why...wtf?? Enquiring minds want to know...what do you get when you take the "Happiest Accident on the Album" (The Great Gig in the Sky) and mash it up with stories about Roger Waters' dead "friends"?? You get The Great Gig in the Sky Redux, the fifth mortally questionable track from Roger Waters' Dark Side of the Moon Redux... We're in middle-row purgatory, wedged between 4 songs that left us scratching our heads, and 5 more we're scared to ask to move so we can get up and use the lav. Why are the new versions always longer?? Chaz & Wolfie take a different listening approach on this one, given the absolute perfection and magnificence of the original track. Is it a better listening experience - who the fuk knows?? We're just glad we made it through another one without major gastrointestinal incident. It was close...butt we made it. Grab your banana and kick back for another ear-lashing, as we're joined by the late, great, Eddie "Phat Fingers" Perez, for a very Ouiga edition of Regarding Roger. S2. Episode 4. Time

S2. Episode 4. Time

2023-12-0301:36:30

Ticking away the moments that make up the dull new track...whoops...spoiler...Chaz & Wolfie get woke as a joke to the sounds of the new Time, versus the sublime subtleties and boneless silky guitar mastery of the original track. (Even that bass player turns in an iconic performance...) Seriously...four tracks in on Roger's Redux Moon and the guys finally find some music. They manage to keep it zipped for most of it and just listen, okay, that's not true, and there are disturbing tales of rest-stop ketchup & coke, a moving tribute to the man who told someone to take what became an iconic picture of Earth from the dark side of the moon, and a new resentment over allegations of broken Rogacratic Oath that leaves Wolfie wanting more. Of course, there are enough colorful expressions of fuckary and in such obscene context as to render the rating "explicit" on this episode for good cause, Mrs. Gore. Chaz needs a bar of lifeboy and a seat on the thunder-bucket to think through his attachment to the original work and be more open to geriatric artistic expression. Chaz & Wolfie are back to listening to sound effects with the third track off 1973's Dark Side of the Moon - the *light your rockship joints* auditory journey through the TSA feel up, pat down, cavity search and run through the concourse of your mind that is the frantic On the Run. Roger really does something different with the redux version, and our co-hosts end up further down the rabbit hole of philosophical contemplation and confusion. While several moments of clarity are achieved...wait...were they? Maybe it was all a dream? Why Roger, why?
