Description
Hi! Our names are Joseph Merced and Lance Hinagpis. We are students, researchers, and "big-brain" thinkers. This channel was set up to show others what it means to live intentionally, presently, and foolishly.
The goal of our channel is to express our own personal thoughts and opinions on different topics in our society and we hope to achieve this by creating meaningful content that showcases our creativity, as well as our constant desire to learn. Along the way we are hoping to learn something new, whether it be a new life philosophy, something incredibly pointless, or something in between.

Who knows best about what makes you happy? In the first episode of Relatable Research, we talk about Stephanie Hare and Nicole Vincent's paper "Happiness, Cerebroscopes and Incorrigibility: Prospects for Neuroeudaimonia." This paper tied together a few different research fields like Psychology, Neuroscience, and Philosophy and discussed how scientists and empirical research can potentially help us live happier lives. They also argued that, although science can help predict what is likely to make us happy, ultimately, only we can determine whether we feel happy or not.
For this episode, we talk about how pursuing happiness doesn't have to be rushed - it can be a spontaneous feeling. We also break down the different sections of this paper and share the meaningful parts that we found worth noting. Finally, we try and discuss why it's important to value our own personal pursuit of happiness.
Hey everyone! This will be the last episode of the Coffee Mates Podcast and we want to thank everyone for spending time with us and for listening to two 22-year old normies. Though this may be the end of the Coffee Mates podcast, we would like to share a big announcement with you all!
We are starting a *NEW* podcast that we hope will be more relatable for our audience and will hopefully incorporate more things that we like to do research on! The goal will still be to engage in meaningful conversation with others and to ask "big-brain" questions - we still want to keep wrinkling our brains. However, moving forward, we want to create a fun way to engage in conversations about everyday topics through the lens of researchers; we want to take what we’ve both learned (and eventually will learn) and share that with you. You won’t have to do the research because we’ll do it for you and make it relatable :D
Take a listen to this episode to find out our *NEW* podcast name and thanks for sticking with us! We really appreciate it and we'll see you next in the first episode of our *NEW* podcast!
"If everybody is great, there would be no such thing as great" - Just Derick.
Who's "Just Derick"? It's Derick Gonzales you silly goose. And actually, it should be THE Derick. That guy who can walk into a room and instantly brighten everyone's mood with his presents. His presence too.
In this episode we talk with our good friend Derick on his experience of building up his recent business, "Journey Basketball", a youth basketball camp that recognizes “The destination can’t be reached without a journey.” Apart from that, tune in to hear about the fun high school adventures we had and more.
Check out Journey Basketball here.
Lance and Joseph (in the moooorning) back on their reflection BS to start off 2021. Despite a vast and rich variety of topics under our belt to explore (this is a lie), we instead play a highly requested game. However once we realized we sucked at said game, League of Legends, we play another game we recently discovered: "We're Not Really Strangers". Also where's the dedicated coffee episode? Aren't you guys called Coffee Mates?
In this episode we tackle WNRS, "a purpose driven card game and movement all about empowering meaningful connections." As we take turns pulling cards from the game, listen to our fun, dumb, and deep experiences of being bIg BraIn ThiNkerS.
In this episode, we are talking with our really good friend, Kelvin Peligro, about the keys to approaching self-development and the ways in which we have been introduced to the self-help industry. This is a great podcast episode for people who are looking for practical ways to approach self-development. We lay out the pros and cons of investing our time and energy in various self-development resources and we also lay out our own personal experiences with trying to grow individually. Also, please check out Kelvin's new podcast, "Learning to Be Better" where he "explores a variety of topics aimed at those in the pursuit of self-betterment." Thanks for checking us out and we hope you enjoy!
Listen to us reflect and expose ourselves during our undergrad experiences!!!!!!!!
We asked some friends on our Instagram accounts to send us questions based on our undergrad, and so we delve into our advice, regrets, juicy stories, laughing, sleeping habits, and more.
Here's the article we mentioned: Woman shares her therapist's surprisingly helpful mental health tip: 'Run the dishwasher twice' - Upworthy
"Among Us an Imposter there is." - Yoda (probably)
Have you ever felt like you don't belong? Had any feelings of not fitting in the crowd and that your accomplishments and goals are minuscule in comparison to other people's achievements and goals?
In this episode, we talk about what Imposter Syndrome is, our own experiences with feeling like an imposter, and ways in which we hope to combat these feelings in the future! We also lay out some tips at the end to help on how to deal with Imposter Syndrome. We hope you enjoy this one!

Joseph and Lance bring on their first guest: Kathleen Zaragosa!!!!
Link to her research: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1PPbva9HmiQt7KWRGxddB1ndWaJe8KNGw/view?usp=sharing
The three of us discuss Kathleen's recent research project: "Heritage Language Usage in Filipinx-Canadian Children of Immigrants". Namely, we talk about the term "Filipinx" and when it is appropriate to use such a term, the importance of learning one's heritage language, and the different ways we can invite others to be more educated in our culture. Shoutout to Kathleen for being such a great guest!
In our very first full episode, we talk about Netflix's new documentary, "The Social Dilemma," and how social media platforms are made to be addicting.
Technology is embedded into the very fabric of our lives. From smart homes to social media, technology has been able to adapt and evolve into something that we as a society have been complacent and comfortable with. The documentary, "The Social Dilemma" is a documentary/short film that tries to explain why tech companies play an even bigger role in our lives than we think and how these companies actually monetize addiction.
We hope you enjoy! We're watching you Big Brother.
Trying out these podcast shenanigans.
Listen to us talk with Josh Abando, one of Lance's closest friends, about 2020! All three of us are going to be sharing some aspects we feel like we've grown in this past year and we'll also be sharing some things that we truly missed this year; namely hanging out with you, our friends! We are also going to share some things that we'll be looking forward to in 2021! Although this year was very challenging, we're looking forward to the opportunities that are coming our way in 2021 and we hope to continue and grow as individuals during this really tough time.
This'll be our last episode of 2020 and we're hoping to give you guys more content for the next year! Thanks for sticking with us and let us know what other topics we should talk about in the coming year!
