Description

Whether it was a reaction to the politics of the time or the rapidly approaching end date of the Mayan calendar, the pop-cultural landscape of the early 2010s can be best remembered for one thing: dystopian literature. Join plucky young heroines and podcast hosts Daphne and Kellie as they dive into all of your favorite young adult novels and series from this era as we reread the revolution. We lived through it once and are back to recap, review, and discuss all the best and worst that the world-shifting genre of YA fiction has to offer–the sci-fi, the fantasy, and the supernatural–at least until our society crumbles and we have to survive a brave new world.

UNLOCK THE FULL EPISODE BY SUBSCRIBING TO OUR PATREON AT PATREON.COM/REREADINGTHEREVOLUTION"The Bear took this blueprint and ran with it."Clearly our patrons wanted more vampire content for Halloween, because our bonus episode this month is on the 2014 Vampire Academy movie! We discuss the movie's tonal confusion, the cast of (mostly) YA heavy-hitters, changes from the book to the film script, and where the series went from here.Follow us on social media @rereadingtherevolution for updates and bonus content! "That face card has never declined once in his life.”As promised, Catherine Hardwicke's stunning 2009 adaptation of Twilight is on our screens this week. We're joined by longtime friend and Twilight superfan Sam, and the hater police are in for a treat because it's our least critical episode of all time (and if we're being realistic, probably for all time). I'd say to take a sip every time we say the word "iconic" or talk about what a life-changing piece of cinema this is, but you would probably die.Don't worry, we still did our homework and bring in tons of behind-the-scenes details about the cast and crew, filming locations, wardrobe and makeup, and how this film made it from page to screen, but the episode more or less devolves into a quote-off by the end. The girls that get it, get it. Hold on tight, spider monkey.Follow us on social media @rereadingtherevolution for updates and bonus content! Hosted on Acast. Surprise! We recorded another special episode, this time on our thoughts about The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3. Kellie and Daphne discuss where we landed opinions-wise on the characters, picking teams, the grand Parisian finale, and that big movie announcement. Follow us on social media @rereadingtherevolution for updates and behind-the-scenes details! "He has been the entire male loneliness epidemic on his own."It's hoa hoa season! To celebrate, we are finally beginning one of our most anxiously-awaited series, Twilight by Stephenie Meyer (2005). We're joined by OG Twihard Hannah Lisa Lohr for a deep dive into the real and fictional worlds of Forks, transcending the good/bad spectrum, the book's heavy religious influences, and teen girl culture, exchanging lots of long, yearning looks along the way.Videos/Articles MentionedAlyssa Grenfell, Signs Twilight was Written by a Mormon: https://youtu.be/JwGC4ewe1_w?si=Fl7HZlmSJ5XXbku1Babbity Kate, Bella Swan's Khaki Skirt: https://youtu.be/nT0XL1dNUh0?si=yLiOx1ODX4wJpW3uForks Tourism: https://www.thetimes.com/world/us-world/article/where-twilight-set-forks-washington-visit-airbnb-9qms7v0p7Carlisle's Net Worth: https://www.forbes.com/2010/04/13/twilight-carlisle-cullen-opinions-fictional-15-10-vampire.htmlStephenie Meyer Blog PostsThe Story Behind Twilight: https://web.archive.org/web/20080730025156/http://www.stepheniemeyer.com/twilight.htmlHow Twilight Got Published: https://stepheniemeyer.com/the-story-of-twilight-getting-published/Cullen Cars: https://stepheniemeyer.com/the-books/twilight/twilight-cullen-cars/Quileute ResourcesQuileute Nation official website: https://quileutenation.org/Learn about and donate to the Move to Higher Ground Project: https://mthg.org/get-involved/Smithsonian Magazine interview with Quileute tribe chairwoman, Bonita Cleveland, about Twilight’s impact on the tribe: https://www.smithsonianmag.com/arts-culture/behind-the-scenes-of-twilight-101387794/Follow Hannah!Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hannahlisalohr/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@hannahlisalohrYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@HannahLisaLohrFollow us on social media @rereadingtherevolution for updates and bonus content! UNLOCK THE FULL EPISODE BY SUBSCRIBING TO OUR PATREON AT PATREON.COM/REREADINGTHEREVOLUTION"Let us read good books!"We just covered Shatter Me on the main feed, and our patrons wanted to keep the good times rolling with the first of Tahereh Mafi's many, many sequels, Unravel Me (2013). In this episode, we discuss the series' insane chronology, Juliette's big feelings, the foregone conclusion of the love triangle, and a few genuinely shocking twists and turns along the way.Follow us on social media @rereadingtherevolution for updates and bonus content! "This is not an anti-smoking book."We asked our Patrons which John Green book we should take on next, and the consensus was in resounding favor of Looking for Alaska (2005). Kellie and Daphne revisit the novel for the first time in over a decade, mourn the loss of the Hulu adaptation, quote the endlessly-reblogged lines, and reflect on how it's all aged as we try to find our way out of the labyrinth and seek our Great Perhaps.Follow us on social media @rereadingtherevolution for updates and bonus content! "Is it magic? I guess!"Stay with us here--it's back to school season, so we're revisiting a true children's and young adult classic: Lois Lowry's The Giver (1993). This book may have been required reading in middle school, but it's more interesting than you might remember. In this episode, we discuss how Jonas' story echoes through the 2000s and 2010s dystopian books we usually cover on the show, its legacy of changing lives, and some of the more puzzling plot points.School Library Journal's Top 100 Children's Novels: https://www.wssd.k12.pa.us/Downloads/top%20100%20childrens%20novels.pdfFollow us on social media @rereadingtherevolution for updates and bonus content! "This is cartoon villain-level behavior."We're headed back to Beechwood! In this episode, we're discussing the new Amazon Prime adaptation of E. Lockhart's 2014 novel, We Were Liars, and we have a lot to say about it. Kellie reports exclusive behind-the-scenes details from the show's panels at ATX TV Festival featuring Julie Plec, Carina Adly Mackenzie, and E. Lockhart herself, and she and Daphne spill all the differences between the book and show and our thoughts on them. “The tilt a whirl…the most romantic ride at the carnival.”Happy Pride! We’re celebrating by reading one of the most popular coming-out stories not only of the 2010s, but maybe ever? It’s Becky Albertalli’s 2015 debut novel, Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda. If that title’s not ringing any bells for you, this is the book that would go on to become the 2018 film Love, Simon. Daphne and Kellie talk all things teen romance, theater kid culture, and our own high school experiences as we dive into Simon’s sweet and salty love story.Becky Albertalli’s Medium post: https://medium.com/@rebecca.albertalli/i-know-im-late-9b31de339c62Follow us on social media @rereadingtherevolution for updates and behind-the-scenes details! "Actually, while you’re here, I’m gonna make you think.”In honor of the upcoming Amazon Prime adaptation, we read E. Lockhart's summer mystery thriller, We Were Liars (2014)! We can’t say much about the plot, so instead I’ll share that some of my rejected title ideas included “Real Eyes Realize Real Lies” and “My Own Private Island.” If anyone asks you about this episode, just lie about it 🤫Follow us on social media @rereadingtherevolution for updates and behind-the-scenes details! I don't even have a quote for this one. We're just really excited. This was supposed to be a Patreon-exclusive mini bonus, but there's already so much news surrounding the Sunrise on the Reaping movie that we had to make it a full-length episode--and they haven't even started filming yet. We're covering the cast in depth, as well as what we know about the film so far and the fan casting contest. "Their calling is to go work in the Cheeto factory."We're back with our second episode on The Host by Stephenie Meyer (2008)! Kellie and Daphne pick up from that dramatic Walter cliffhanger to take on the love square, body swaps, and low-stakes heists of the back half of the book, and I accidentally say "conclave" instead of "enclave" because we recorded this during new pope week! The Host playlist (not annotated): https://stepheniemeyer.com/the-books/the-host/the-host-playlist/The Host bonus chapter is very hard to find. "I guess there’s really not that many different alien storylines."Stephenie Meyer's 2008 book The Host is a behemoth. Kellie and Daphne take on the first half of the alien invasion story in part one of our first two-episode special.
