As respiratory students and actively working therapists we have a tendency to focus primarily on developing our technical skills. Wether that is enhancing our understanding of ventilator management or improving our knowledge of respiratory pathology, we are constantly striving to know more. But, what if we are missing something very important by focusing only on technical development. In fact, what if we focus so much on our technical skills that we forget the importance of developing our soft skills. Soft skills are those skills that your teachers in school and potential employers are focussing on more than ever today. They include your ability to get along with your fellow students and coworkers. In the following episode Chuck Mulholland, an active assistant professor of respiratory therapy, breaks down exactly what soft skills teachers and employers are looking for and how to personally assess where you stand in terms of your own soft skill development.
