As a teacher (pants optional during this current work landscape), it was a
pleasure to discuss Alexander Payne’s 1999 film Election with Ian Simmons
on his Kicking the Seat YouTube channel. It was my second spin for his
“Reelpolitik” series after a previous appearance discussing All the
President’s Men. The setting and scope is far different and far more
fictional here. Election is as much a teacher movie as it was a political
one. Enjoy our video conversation on the movie and be sure to follow Ian
Simmons on his YouTube channel this week!
COVID-19’s loss is our VOD gain with the new Scoob! from Warner Bros. I
can’t say I was a huge Scooby Doo nut as a kid, but I have seen more enough
in my years to know what is the essence of that lovable franchise. That
gave me a little fandom leg up on Ian Simmons of the Kicking the Seat
podcast, a guy who spent more time in Eternia with He-Man an on Cybertron
with the Transformers than hanging out with snacks in the back of the
Mystery Machine. We both weigh in on what worked and what didn’t while
fighting the urge to say zoinks far more than necessary.
As I hope you have been following through this extended theater closure,
Kicking the Seat’s Ian Simmons and I have found our share of streaming
offerings to talk about. We move from his YouTube channel to his regular
podcast platform to talk about the displace SXSW redneck crime entry
Arkansas, the directorial debut of actor Clark Duke. Listen to us wax on
about Vince Vaughn and The Flaming Lips for this indie available now on VOD
platforms everywhere. Enjoy his show!
Boy, I tell you. You get right three men together with the right movie and
hearts overflow. That was Ian Simmons of the Kicking the Seat podcast,
David Fowlie of Keeping It Reel, and myself sharing our experiences with
Pixar’s Onward. All three of us are dads. All three of us are brothers in
our families. The movie’s hearty feels won each of us over and it was a
blast, as always, to talk about it on Ian’s recorded airwaves. Enjoy a good
film-loving session!
As a special for Black History Month, I was honored to join Aaron White and
Patrick Hicks of the Feelin' Film Podcast for an opportunity to love all
over my #1 film of 2018, If Beale Street Could Talk from Moonlight Oscar
winner Barry Jenkins. Joining me as another guest and bringing the dais to
four was Kolby Mac, the new host of FF’s “Black Label” podcast. This was
such a wonderful episode! Listeners are in for a treat! Take a listen to
the episode here or below:
One thing that doesn’t need a title change is Ian Simmons’ Kicking the Seat
podcast. The same cannot be said of Birds of Prey (and the Emancipation of
One Harley Quinn. That movie was the discussion subject of the recent 499th
episode of Ian’s program. He, David Fowlie of Keeping It Reel, Emmanuel
Noisette of E-Man’s Movie Reviews, and I passed around the hair tie to talk
about the colorful and not-to-soft Suicide Squid sequel and spin off. Enjoy
us comic fans putting forth some insight and regret!
Aaron White and Patrick Hicks of the Feelin' Film Podcast were offered the
chance to review Sgt. Stubby: An American Hero from animator and voice
actor Jordan Beck. With its educational aims, the two brought me in to be
the third man and the teacher voice in their interview with Mr. Beck. The
three of us loved the film, its values, and its themes. It was a please to
speak with Jordan, who couldn’t have been more gracious and accomodating!

If the two of us were paid for doing this stuff, Ian Simmons of Kicking the
Seat and I would be following the money for All the President’s Men. For a
little something different than our usual big roundtables for new movies,
Ian and I put the recorders on to mix politics and movies together. The
dark parking garage was optional. For nearly an hour, we build bridges
between old brilliance and analog journalism to our 24-hour news cycle and
current times with this masterpiece being the mold. Enjoy this very topical
and jovial shared conversation!
The dead speak! On an early morning in advance of its much ballyhooed
release, Ian Simmons of Kicking the Seat assembled the clones of myself,
David Fowlie of Keeping It Reel, Emmanuel Noisette of E-Man’s Movie Reviews
, and Mike Crowley of You’ll Probably Agree to put all of our Midichlorians
on the table to immediately react to Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
There’s so much forceful spirit on this dais, you would think it’s the real
versions of all of us. Enjoy this podcast episode!
Twice in a month! On the heels of their monumental three-part 200th episode
special (covering the true Indiana Jones trilogy), I returned to the
Feelin' Film Podcast to close out the 100s with an underrated and underseen
gem that all three of us loved. For Episode #199, Patrick Hicks, Aaron
White, and me discussed the high values and movie merits of The Peanut
Butter Falcon starring Zack Gottshagen, Shia LeBeouf, and Dakota Johnson.
Earning five-stars from all three of us, this road movie stands as one of
our favorites from 2019 that we hopes gains in appreciation and acclaim
with time.
I had the honor and pleasure this past week to join the war-movie-loving
hosts on the Feelin' Film Podcast talking about a true underseeen throwback
geme: 1990’s Memphis Belle directed by 90s hitmaker Michael Caton-Jones.
This podcast plane ride was celebrating Veteran’s Day week in conjunction
with the new Midway movie arriving in theaters this week. Memphis Belle
was a worn-out VHS childhood favorite of my brother and me. Patrick had
that lifelong affinity as well and Aaron, the former Navy man, had nothing
but respect
The movie that had everyone talking before its release had four film
critics filled with words after its advance press screening. The comic
council convened to be dared to love or hate Joker. As always, Ian Simmons
leads the Kicking the Seat podcast as myself, David Fowlie of Keeping It
Reel and Emmanuel Noisette of E-Man’s Movie Reviews hop into this clown
car. The surprise and heat in voices was palpable coming out of that
screening. Enjoy this podcast episode!
Ian Simmons of the Kicking the Seat podcast leads what has come to be
lovingly called “Earth’s Mightiest Critics” to explore another big and loud
comic book movie. Matching the fireworks of the holiday, Spider-Man:
Far From Home was the entertainment coming off the grill to the picnic
table for our talk. As always, Ian, David Fowlie of Keeping It Reel and
Emmanuel Noisette of E-Man’s Movie Reviews, and myself bounce the ideas. Us
unqualified old men are joined by a special guest from the target
demographic, David’s teenage daughter Grace. This was a very fun and long
show for all of us! Give Kicking the Seat, a subscribe, follow, and a
listen:
It with Ian Simmons of the Kicking the Seat podcast where I no longer feel
like an island after watching and review Toy Story 4. He and I sat next to
each other at the screening and both shared a great deal of chagrin
afterwards. We put that together for his latest podcast episode against the
positive interventions of David Fowlie of Keeping It Reel and Emmanuel
Noisette of E-Man’s Movie Reviews. In addition to talking out the highs and
lows of the movie, I was invited to share my experience this past week of
being one of the extremely few “Rotten” Rotten Tomatoes reviews for Toy
Story 4. Great conversations here for my 20th appearance on Ian’s fine sh
Give it a listen!
Three-fourths of the “comic counsel” crew of Ian' Simmons’ Kicking the Seat
podcast came together to talk after F. Gary Gray’s Men in Black:
International. Emmanuel Noisette of E-Man’s Movie Reviews, Ian, and myself
vented on how this summer is not making lemonade with the lemons that have
been rolling through this summer. Our surprise and exasperation really
shows from the retread tone and mostly vacant fun of this franchise reboot.
Listen to our podcast session and commit it to memory!
The “comic counsel” dais of Ian' Simmons’ Kicking the Seat podcast was
burnt to the ground and resurrected from the ashes at the ShowPlace ICON X
theater after watching the culminating send-off that was supposed to be
Dark Phoenix, the final Fox X-Men film. David Fowlie of Keeping it Reel,
Emmanuel Noisette of E-Man’s Movie Reviews, myself, and four hot new
microphones makes this post-film discussion sizzle. Come and enjoy our
back-and-forth. Critic and proud!
With guns blazing and some fun editing, Ian Simmons of Kicking the Seat
was kind enough to invite me for his podcast roundtable for John Wick:
Chapter 3 - Parabellum. I came into this as a neophyte where I hadn’t seen
any of this series before prepping for the third. David Fowlie of Keeping
it Reel and Emmanuel Noisette of E-Man’s Movie Reviews and to this circle
and we all approach this one quite uniquely. Reload with us and enjoy the
critiques!
Folks, this was the big one! Immediately after the hush-hush advance press
screening of Avengers: Endgame, Ian Simmons of Kicking the Seat called for
the “comic council” of film critics to assemble. True to our loyal form,
David Fowlie of Keeping it Reel and myself started spoiler-free and then
expanded to full spoilers on our fresh and immediate reactions on the big
MCU finale. Mere minutes after the epic film’s conclusion, the three of us
exhaled for a very spirited conversation.
Look! It’s the other Captain Marvel movie! In a quick turnaround after
Marvel took it’s turn in March, the “comic council” of film critics united
again to say our own magic words. Kicking the Seat’s Ian Simmons crossed
the Skype-streams to put the wizardry of Ian, David Fowlie of Keeping it
Reel, Emmanuel Noisette of Eman's Movie Reviews and myself together for a
heck of a super-spirited podcast. Enjoy!
Not waiting for any S.H.I.E.L.D. clearance of sign from Thanos, Kicking the
Seat’s Ian Simmons convened the “comic council” of film critics for the new
Captain Marvel starring Brie Larson. Our Skype-tied dais puts their cosmic,
warped, and warped cosmic thoughts on the record. Enjoy myself, Ian, David
Fowlie of Keeping it Reel, and Emmanuel Noisette of Eman's Movie Reviews
as we celebrate and critique the latest Marvel dynamo.. Enjoy our extremely
entertaining back-and-forth chat!
