"American Idiot" ist das siebte Studioalbum der Band und mit mehr als 15 Millionen verkauften Einheiten mit Abstand das kommerziell erfolgreichste Album der Gruppe. 2005 gab es dann auch noch Grammy-Auszeichnungen für das "Beste Rockalbum" und der Song "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams" wurde als "Beste Aufnahme" prämiert. Das Album war poppig genug für alle Mainstream-Fans und punkig genug für die Punks – sie haben den musikalischen Sweet Spot gefunden! Quelle: Patrick Schütz, SWR1 Musikredakteur über "American Idiot" "American Idiot" ist nicht nur eine Ansammlung von 13 einzelnen Punkrock-Songs, sondern in der Entstehung schon als Konzeptalbum, als Rockoper angelegt. Welche Band und welches Album hier als Vorbild galt, ist ganz klar: "Quadrophenia" von The Who! Green Day wollten bei diesem Album diese ganzen (klassischen) Rockelemente mit einfließen lassen und das hört man auf diesem Album. Dabei gibt es immer wieder Parallelen zum Klassiker von The Who. Das beginnt, wie wir sehen, schon beim Namen des "Helden", Jimmy. Aber auch andere große Hits der Rock- und Popgeschichte werden von Green Day zitiert: "Summer of '69" von Bryan Adams, "Wonderwall" von Oasis und einige andere. "American Idiot": So verbindet sich das ganze Album Das faszinierende an der Platte ist, dass Songs wie "American Idiot", "Holiday" und "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams" ganz wunderbar als einzelne Songs funktionieren, weshalb sie – für eine Punkrockband – ziemlich erfolgreich im Radio gespielt worden sind. Trotzdem greifen sie auch als Ganzes ineinander und erzählen die Geschichte von "Jimmy" immer weiter. Und das auf allen Ebenen: in den Songs, aber auch in den Musikvideos der Band. Die Songs werden zum Beispiel einfach in Videoform miteinander verknüpft. So läuft beispielsweise am Anfang des Musikvideos zu "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams" noch der Song "Holiday" im Autoradio. Bei "American Idiot" gibt es Botschaften auf vielen Ebenen Als Punkband gehört eine gewaltige Portion Gesellschaftskritik natürlich auch für die Jungs von Green Day dazu. Beim Album "American Idiot" passiert das vornehmlich in zwei Songs der Platte. Beim Song "Holiday" und gleich im Album-Opener "American Idiot". Dort wird den Medien und der Politik vorgeworfen, mit der Angst der Menschen zu spielen und sie für ihre Zwecke auszunutzen, im Schatten des Terrors vom 11. September 2001. An die Hörer (die US-Amerikaner) appelliert Sänger Billy Joe Armstrong sinngemäß: "Lasst euch nicht manipulieren. Lasst euch nicht verängstigen, denn sonst seid ihr die amerikanischen Idioten! Glaubt nicht der Propaganda." Im Song selbst wird die Botschaft nicht nur durch den Songtext übermittelt, sondern das passiert auch mit Hilfe klangtechnischer bzw. sounddesigntechnischer Elemente. Zum Beispiel, wenn Textpassagen wie Ausrufe bei Demonstrationen inszeniert werden oder wenn Zeilen durch ein Megafon geschrien werden, das man aus ähnlichen Situationen kennt. All das sind stilistische Mittel, um die Botschaft des Songs zu untermauern. "American Idiot" war eine Art politische Kampagne Auch optisch wird das durch das "Heartgrenade"-Cover untermauert, genauso wie durch das Bühnenoutfit der Band, bei dem militärische Abzeichen und Streifen nachgeahmt worden sind. Gestützt wird das alles von der Aussage des Sängers Billy Joe Armstrong, der "American Idiot" wie eine politische Kampagne betrachtet: Wir wollten aus allen Zylindern feuern! Alles, von der Ästhetik über die Musik bis hin zum Look. Quelle: Billy Joe Armstrong über "American Idiot" Das Album stand unter einem schlechten Stern Der Weg zu diesem erfolgreichen Album war alles andere als leicht, denn eigentlich sollte es "American Idiot" gar nicht geben. Nach dem 2000er-Album "Warning" hatten Green Day im Studio gut zwanzig andere Songs für ein Album mit dem Titel "Cigarettes and Valentines" aufgezeichnet, die plötzlich verschwunden sind. Somit stand die Band vor der Entscheidung: Nehmen wir diese Songs nochmal neu auf oder starten wir ganz von vorne mit neuen Ideen und neuen Songs? Green Day haben sich dann für Letzteres entschieden – glücklicherweise! Ich muss sagen: Zum Glück haben sie nochmal ein ganz, ganz neues Album geschrieben! Ich hab das damals rauf und runter gehört!
