Description

Welcome fellow SLEAZOIDS!!! Come along as hosts Josh Lewis and Jamie Miller (and, occasionally, guests) go down the rabbit hole of 20th century genre fare from the most influential canon classics to the the trashiest exploitation films we can get our hands on. Each week is a double feature—grindhouse style—where we discuss two films loosely related by subject, genre, actor, filmmaker or franchise and at the end of each episode, along with our HONORARY SLEAZOIDS (click on over to our patreon to become one), we decide on ratings and rankings for each film that's covered. Join us as together we work to uncover the best genre films of 20th century.

Hosts Josh and Jamie and special guest filmmaker Charles Pinion (the director behind scuzzy and psychedelic shot-on-video art-horror films we've covered including RED SPIRIT LAKE, TWISTED ISSUES and WE AWAIT) discuss two surreal musical fantasies that he loved growing up and informed his own directing style: Roy Rowland's Dr. Suess scripted take on a dark post-war WIZARD OF OZ-style imaginatively dreamlike, Technicolor children's fantasy THE 5000 FINGERS OF DR. T (1953) and infamous cult trash filmmaker Ray Dennis Steckler's no-budget Long Beach amusement park "monster musical" THE INCREDIBLY STRANGE CREATURES WHO STOPPED LIVING AND BECAME MIXED-UP ZOMBIES!!? (1964). Due to scheduling issues next week's episode will not be the one announced at the end of this episode, but instead an episode on PLANET OF THE APES (1968) and BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE APES (1970), you can get access to that episode (and all past + future bonus episodes) by subscribing to our $5 tier on Patreon: www.patreon.com/sleazoidspodcast Intro // 00:00-23:18 5000 FINGERS OF DR. Pierce's spooky regional faux-documentary about the Arkansas bigfoot THE LEGEND OF BOGGY CREEK (1972) and minimalist indie-horror legend Larry Fessenden's unnerving mix of emotionally cogent family drama and hallucinatory cannibal cryptid B-horror fable WENDIGO (2001). Hosts Josh and Jamie and special returning guest Eddie Averill (of Extended Clip) discuss two movies that update the old-school macho western folk hero for the 70s/80s vigilante justice-revenge and regional outlaw crime movie: B-movie maestro Phil Karlson's mix of hokey, friendly country-western drama and brutal, traumatizing exploitation blockbuster WALKING TALL (1973) starring Joe Don Baker and Rowdy Herrington's broad, vulgar, caricatured hangout neo-western meets 80s dive bar melodrama meets sick over-the-top 80s action/martial arts cult movie masterpiece ROAD HOUSE (1989) starring Patrick Swayze. Hosts Josh and Jamie and special returning guest Perry Ruhland discuss expertly directed, unconventional 90s crime thrillers about five guys in the criminal underworlds of Japan and Hong Kong teaming up to do a job and it not quite going to plan in Takashi Ishii's ruthlessly bleak yakuza heist-horror hybrid GONIN (1995) and Johnnie To's artfully controlled triad hangout movie THE MISSION (1999). Hosts Josh and Jamie and special returning guest Eric Szyszka (of We Hate Movies) discuss the man, the myth, the mustache Burt Reynolds with a neo-noir pulp double feature of his attempt at a grislier, sexier 1970s update on a Philip Marlowe private detective conspiracy in Buzz Kulik's SHAMUS (1973) and his charmingly weary turn as William Goldman's Las Vegas strip for-hire mercenary/gambling addict in HEAT (1986) directed by apparently 6 different directors.
