SVGSPN Presents--My Soccer Life with Oronde Ash

I'm recognizing the breadth and scope of my social circle. I'm 1 phone call away from a number of professional athletes and coaches. Heck, I'm 2 phone calls away from President Obama, by virtue of another soccer connection. The Beautiful Game has been good to me. It took me around the world, provided a free college education and a livelihood afterwards. With this podcast, I don't just want to tell my story. I want you to hear the stories, experiences and lessons--on the field or off--of the people in and around my circle. I think you'll learn something from our talks. Should be fun.

SVGSPN, S2E10--Marlon Alex James: A Legend Away From Home

SVGSPN, S2E10--Marlon Alex James: A Legend Away From Home. Marlon Alex James is a retired professional footballer from St. Vincent and the Grenadines who played in Trinidad, Portugal, Vancouver and became a legend in the Malaysian league. But no one in St. Vincent really knows this. Young players back home who want to achieve what Marlon did in football don't know his story enough to use it as inspiration or a guide post. After a year in which St. Vincent's volcano erupted, displacing 20000 people out of their homes, where Covid-19 is still at pandemic level, where kids are not in school, not playing football, Marlon's story offers a reminder of what's possible for a Vincentian who wants to go farther than the limits, issues or problems in our country.

SVGSPN, S2E8--Coach Dale Mercury: The List, The Life

SVGSPN, S2E8--Coach Dale Mercury: The List, The Life  There's high controversy in SVG footballing circles today following Saturday night's (Feb. 13th) publication of the 24-man World Cup qualifying roster. The list of players invited to camp for the March 25 game was ubiquitous for the absence of notable names. In the hours since publication, Coach Mercury and the SVGFF have been under heavy scrutiny for the thinking process and any competitive future for Team SVG. SVGSPN S1E2, Round 19--Hope v Predators, System3 v Sion Hill

SVGSPN S1E2, Round 19--Hope v Predators, System3 v Sion Hill  Hope is leading the Premier League. Predators are in 4th place coming off a 4-5 loss to System3 where the were leading 4-0 at the half. Sion Hill is playing with only 10 men... No More Long Balls Plz. After watching my first SVG Premier League games, the individual talent on the field, the level and organization of play, overall understanding of broader football concepts and players applying them to their specific teams appear nonexistent. As a nation that qualified for the Gold Cup 25 years ago, making FIFA history in the process, if I'm judging the teams in the Premier League, SVG football has to get better. TAYLOR MADE (Part 4 of 5): The 1995 St. Vincent & the Grenadines Mens Nat'l Team's... Ep #4--Richmond December 16, 1995, 8pm, I land in St. Vincent and get driven directly to team camp in Richmond. 12 hrs in transit, 10 yrs away from home and I can't see  the country in the dark. 25 days until we play Mexico in San Diego, CA, everyone hungry to prove they belong on the Gold Cup roster, especially against a foreigner like me. The federation had no money to plan with, there was little food to eat but still 3 training sessions each day. We were alone in a far corner of the island, no choice but to rely on one another.  And then we were accused of drug dealing and more. TOPICS 01:00.....My first days back home with the national team; Hungry, outta shape; No money, nothing at all 05:50...Begging for food; Dalrymple killed a cow; Logistics/Driving to Richmond 11:00.....Work vs football imbalance; Isolation at Richmond 16:25....Coach Lenny accused of drug dealing; Secret police raided team van looking for drugs; Why was I selected? 24:00..No quitting; Gotta prepare for Mexico; Natural beauty and neglect; Cutthroat competition, shit-talking, fights 29:00.."Schoolboy" Marlon James running; Fitz vs The General; The Foreign Based; First Impression; Team politics 36:05..The secret value of dreadlocks; What I added to the team; Trainer Gideon Labban 41:00...Fitz pushed for his GK spot; Marlon and Maz-I 47:00..When Nothing matters; California dreaming;  RICHMOND 1.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z3mIyTaEhu8 The Richmond Vale Academy 2. TAYLOR MADE (Part 3 of 5): The 1995 St. Vincent & the Grenadines Mens Nat'l Team's Improbable Run to the 1996 Gold Cup (And Why It Hasn't Been Done Since)--No Weapons Formed

TAYLOR MADE (Part 3 of 5): The 1995 St. Vincent & the Grenadines Mens Nat'l Team's Improbable Run to the 1996 Gold Cup (And Why It Hasn't Been Done Since)--No Weapons Formed... Coach Lenny Taylor returns to St. Vincent after making history with his young team. But instead of praise there's more pressure, more rumors and accusations laid against him and a grab for power from forces within the football federation. On top of that, one of the best players on the team has been hand picked by El Rei, Pele himself, to go to Brazilian club Santos. This is the culmination of the dream Lenny came to St. Vincent with in 1992. Develop players who can showcase themselves on a bigger stage, bringing ore eyes to SVG, more and more development. But some don't see it that way and make other plans, destroying possibility and promise. Lenny begins to last out, to defend himself in the media only to field more vitriol his way. And the team still has to get ready for the Windward Island Championships and the Gold Cup, while incorporating a new player no one knows about.

TAYLOR MADE (Part 2 of 5): The 1995 St. Vincent & the Grenadines Mens Nat'l Team's Improbable Run to the 1996 Gold Cup (And Why It Hasn't Been Done Since)--A Pass Back  Following a successful Shell Cup tournament in the Cayman Islands, July 1995, the team returns to SVG. Before they get started on final preparations for the Gold Cup, we take a look some of the issues that plagued the federation and players from 1992-94, years where the standard on the field dropped and the administration was in turmoil. Money woes, hunger,  using wooden desks for beds while in camp, a player strike and a tragedy that made football a pariah in the business community, all reminders of why the Cayman triumph meant so much more than some may think.

TAYLOR MADE (Part 1 of 5): The 1995 St. Vincent & the Grenadines Mens Nat'l Team's Improbable Run to the 1996 Gold Cup (And Why It Hasn't Been Done Since)--1995  In 1995, St. Vincent & the Grenadines became the smallest nation to ever qualify for a major FIFA tournament when they upset Cuba to claim a spot in the 1996 Gold Cup in the USA. In December 1995, SVG was also the smallest nation with the highest FIFA ranking (#95). At 100000 people, no professional football, no money from FIFA, no grassroots, no youth league, no player development plans, no int'l football history to draw upon, what made Coach Lenny Taylor think it was possible to turn a group of players--avg age 23--into world beaters. Took him a few years... but he kinda did. That 1995 int'l season was a footballing miracle that begs  to be heard.

SVGSPN, S1E5 Round 22--Sion Hill FC v SV United, Awesome FC v Chelsea

SVGSPN, S1E5 Round 22--Sion Hill FC v SV United, Awesome FC v Chelsea The last round of the 2019-20 season saw SV United in a must win tussle. Win or get relegated. Awesome FC was in a similar relegation battle needing a point and an SV loss to stay in the premiership.   As a nation that qualified for the Gold Cup 25 years ago, making FIFA history in the process, if I'm judging the teams in the Premier League, SVG football has to get better. Coach Debson Cruickshank and I offer observations, analysis, critiques of the main game each round and advice on how we can improve.
