Sacred Mission Sermon Audio

One request, plainly put: bread, today. Not security for the year or answers for every unknown, just what's needed for now, asked of a Father who feeds. This week considers what it costs us to actually pray this, and what it exposes about where we've been placing our trust instead.

Before Jesus teaches us to ask for anything, he teaches us who we're speaking to. Real prayer isn't performance for an audience or noise meant to earn a hearing; it's a child addressing a Father who already knows what's needed. This week we'll slow down on the address itself, "our Father," and the first three requests that orient every prayer after it: his name, his kingdom, his will.

The Spirit shuts doors into Asia and Bithynia before opening one through a vision, a man from Macedonia asking for help, and Paul reads it as a call. In Philippi that call becomes three very different conversions: Lydia, whose heart the Lord opens in a quiet riverside gathering, a slave girl freed from a spirit that had made others rich off her, and a jailer who asks what he must do to be saved after an earthquake breaks his chains but not his prisoners' resolve to stay. Three lives, three do...

Paul and Barnabas, partners through the whole first journey, split over whether to bring John Mark again, and Luke doesn't soften it, calling it a sharp disagreement. Two mission teams form instead of one, Timothy joins Paul in Lystra, and despite the conflict, the churches are strengthened in the faith and grow daily in number. Even a painful falling-out between godly men doesn't stall what God is doing.

A controversy reaches Jerusalem: must Gentile believers be circumcised and keep the law to be truly saved? Peter reminds the council that God cleansed Gentile hearts by faith alone, with no distinction made, and James settles the matter by grounding it in the prophets rather than in preference. What's decided here protects the gospel itself, that salvation comes through grace, not through becoming someone else first.
