161. Essex Street (part 2)

2025-09-2301:14:27

Let's keep exploring the history of Essex Street! We spent part one strolling from Collins Cove to the Hawthorne Hotel. Part two brings us up a little further to the East India fountain and we cover everything that's packed in between--Salem's layered history of maritime, architecture, literature, and cinema continues. Join Sarah and Jeffrey, your favorite Salem tour guides, for another walk down Essex Street. We delve into the history of the Peabody Essex Museums properties, the long since gone armory, and while Cinema Salem is there today, what about the grand theater that used to be where the parking garage is now?   Feel free to open google maps and walk with us as we start our journey. 160. Essex Street (part 1)

2025-09-1701:06:15

Let’s take a walk down Essex Street, Salem’s oldest and perhaps most iconic street, it didn't always play host to millions of visitors in October. It is lined with over 400 years of history: architecture, maritime, farming, industry, banking, murder, and so much more. Join Jeffrey and Sarah, your favorite Salem tour guides, for a stroll down Witch City’s main drag, recounting buildings and people long gone along the way. From Collins Cove and unmarked graves, to homes that predate the Witch trials, and merchants in between. Let's see what this first part of Essex St holds.  Feel free to open google maps and walk with us as we start our journey. When we talk about the Salem Witch Trials, we spend most of our time focused on 1692, give or take a half-century. Rarely do we bring it all the way to modern day. But many of those involved in the trials had descendants and we finally got the chance to interview one. Just as the stories of innocent victims are woven into our city's history, Sarah Wildes, has woven her way into Mary Bingham's life. Join Jeffrey and Sarah, your favorite Salem tour guides as they get to hear first-hand from a witch trial descendant, three times over, about her life, her research, her theories, and how the very concept of the Salem Witch Trials has impacted her life. A true lived historical experience. https://endwitchhunts.org   Interested in Salem The Podcast Merch!?  CLICK HERE! Interested in supporting the Podcast? Looking for more Salem content? Fall may be approaching, but we're still living the island life! Salem Sound has so much to offer and Misery and Bakers were just the tip of the... island? In part two, we'll venture to Children's (or Cat) Island and hear about how it went from small pox to summer camp. Sarah reads us the long lost tale: “The Desperado of Cat Island.” And we've got a Spanish ship wreck at Tinkers! In our last episode, we covered Elizabeth Howe's life leading up to 1692, her journey from Yorkshire to Rowley, and the whispers of witchcraft that followed her before any afflicted girls in Salem cried out her name. A few weeks ago, we covered the Blizzard of 1978. But what about the Blizzard of '88... 1888 that is? What about centuries before that? Snow storms are destructive enough in the modern era, but how did Puritans in colonial New England deal with them? We'll also jump 150 years forward to the Great White Hurricane of March 1888. Who is the most famous artist in Salem? Some would say that title goes to 13-year-old Georgia Wrenn, the talent behind “Georgia Made This.” You've probably seen her selling Salem-inspired merchandise at the Salem Arts Festival, or perhaps at the Haunted Happenings Marketplace in October. You can also find her products in Moons Gift Shop and at the Peabody Essex Museum Store! And we know several of you listeners probably have "Georgia Made This" apparel hanging in your closet at this very moment. Join Jeffrey and Sarah as they sit down with the Georgia (and her Dad, Chris) to learn about how she got her business off the ground at just 6 years old. What's her favorite design thus far? How does she feel about opening a new store on Front Street? And did she really meet Adam Sandler? www.georgiamadethis.com @georgiamadethis   Interested in Salem The Podcast Merch!?  CLICK HERE! Some of you may remember the 300th year anniversary of the Salem Witch Trials. Perhaps you watched as the memorials were dedicated. Or you followed Laurie Cabot and her fellow witches up to Gallows Hill. But surely none of you were around in 1892! Nearly a century and a half ago, Salem was commemorating the bicentenary of the Salem Witch Trials... or were they? What exactly did Salem look like and how did they treat this grim history? Join Sarah and Jeffrey, your favorite Salem tour guides, for a little 1892 adventure. Are you buying Witch Cream and cigars from the pharmacy at the Witch House? Or being taken on a carriage tour to the hanging grounds. And which house inspired Hawthorne's House of the Seven Gables again?   Endless Night Salem Vampire Salon : discount code SALEMTHEPOD https://www.eventbrite.com/e/2025-endless-night-salem-vampire-salon-noir-blanc-tickets-1090074324649?aff=ebdshpsearchautocomplete 1892 Jan 12. 333 years ago, fear was starting to stir in seventeenth-century Salem as a few young girls claimed to be afflicted by unseen forces. Over the next year, superstition, fear, and a broken legal system would ultimately lead to the wrongful convictions and executions of 19 people. But what exactly was so scandalous or threatening about Sarah Wildes? Join Jeffrey and Sarah, your favorite Salem tour guides, as they delve into the life of another victim from the Salem Witch Trials. Was her reputation as bad her time in court would make it seem? What does the Lobster Shanty, Wolf Next Door Coffee, and Front Street Coffeehouse have in common? These local eateries are all owned and operated by Diane Wolf, Salem's favorite restauranteur extraordinaire. We stole Diane away from tireless work to learn a bit more about her dedication to good coffee and an even better meal. What brought Diane into Salem's restaurant scene in the first place? How did she end up juggling three establishments? And do any ghosts lurk in the basements of your favorite coffeehouse? We'll talk lobster rolls, tourist shenanigans, and even a food network appearance. PS. New England is known for its unpredictable and unforgiving winter weather. We've seen everything from ice storms to a Snowpocalypse, but few storms have had the impact as the Northeastern Blizzard of 1978. Hurricane force winds, extreme tidal flooding, and over two feet of snow in less than two days. Join Sarah and Jeffrey, your favorite Salem tour guides, as they recap the damage, devastation, and aftermath of this historic storm. You'll hear some light-hearted insights about how Salem State College students weathered the blizzard, as well as some grim details about an oil spill and fatal rescue attempt off Salem's coast.  Blizzard Photo Slide Show - Salem News Photos: Looking back at the Blizzard of ‘78 "The Global Hope is Around": An Incident at Salem Sound by K.W. Hide the cannons! Grab your muskets! It's the 250th anniversary of Leslie's Retreat and Salem's annual reenactment of this underrated Revolutionary War conflict is just weeks away! In 1774, the people of Salem took a stand against Colonel Leslie and his 200 British troops. Although no shot was fired, some say February 26th marked the real start of the War for Independence. To commemorate the anniversary, Salem is hosting an array of lectures, programs, and even a "Revolution Ball" at Hamilton Hall! So before we take you back to Episode 52 to brush up on the history, let's chat details about what Salem has in store for this momentous occasion. Perhaps Revolutionary War reenactments aren't your thing! Don't fret! We'll also be covering updates about the upcoming Vampire Salons.  https://www.salem400.org/leslies-retreat/ https://www.revolution250.org/ www.vampfangs.com https://salemmainstreets.org/festivals/salem-so-sweet/   Interested in Salem The Podcast Merch!?  CLICK HERE! And we're back to talk about Laurie Cabot, Salem's *unofficial* Official Witch for the last time (maybe)! We've got her sensational mayoral run to cover, the tercentenary of the Salem Witch Trials, and of course, her help with the Martha Brailsford investigation. But what other nuggets could Sarah have uncovered this week?
