E16: Arron Coote

2023-04-0954:33

E16 of Sav's Stories sees Arron Coote join Sav and Benny for a chat about his journey from Maroubra to ... everywhere. This is an unexpectedly raw episode that beings with swimming in Geneva in winter before discussing first comp experiences, the life long journey that is BJJ and ends with some chat about mental health. We love this episode and we're sure you will too!
In E15 of Sav's Stories, Sav and Benny welcome back Professor Owen Gee Kee from Gracie Miranda to reminisce about the purple belt days and as always, it doesn't take long for the chat to get off track. This fun episode starts with the skills of a purple belt, antics from Sav and Owen's adventures and end with their opinions on trash talking in competitions. Our regular Sway review also veers completely off track - starting with a review of a Braus lightweight gi and ending with reviews about açai... you just can't tell!
E14: Yuri Simões

E14: Yuri Simões

In this episode of Sav’s Stories, Sav and Benny get the chance to interview Yuri Simoes, one of the top fighters of his generation,  following an incredible seminar at Gracie Botany the previous week. Joining the podcast from Singapore, Yuri was gracious enough to discuss his start in BJJ, his BJJ connection with his father as well as answer a few of our listener questions. This was an amazing opportunity for Sav and Benny to interview this champion and we couldn’t be more grateful.
E13: Richie Vas

E13: Richie Vas

In Episode 13 of Batatinha's (little potato) Stories, Batatinha (or Sav, or Craig) chats with long time friend,  champion surfer, champion MMA fighter, no gi instructor and all round nice guy Richie Vas about his journey from Maroubra Beach to the world. Great stories about legendary fights and legendary waves but WARNING! Ordinary language.... ( a few explicit words beginning with F) Always great for a listen and laugh! Enjoy.
S12: Sarah Gee Kee

S12: Sarah Gee Kee

In episode 12 Sav chats with long time friend, academy owner, brown belt and super mum Sarah Gee Kee about, well…. Everything! Be sure to listen about her experience of BJJ during her pregnancy and then the challenges of returning to the mats after becoming a mum.
E11: BossLady

E11: BossLady

2023-01-2258:31

In our first episode for 2023, Sav and Ben invite the third member of the Sav Stories Podcast team - BossLady - on for a chat about Gracie Botany's 1st anniversary as well as to reminisce about where this story started many moons ago when Sav was a white belt. And to finish this episode Mr. Sway joins us with his first gi review - an origin.
Ian Schaffa joins Sav and Benny for the E10 of Sav's Stories and the laughs start from the first second. In his first of what we hope are many appearance of the pod, Ian talks about the start of his journey in MMA as well Street Buffet - his charity organisation to provide food to the homeless in Sydney's Woolloomooloo that Sav and Benny had volunteered at the day before. This really is the perfect Christmas episode of Sav's Stories - as you are about to discover.
Following on from E8 with Coach Ifa, in E9 Benny and Sav chat with Clint and Jeff - two comp dads  - about their experiences supporting their children through the build up to comp day and then the matches themselves. This is a really inspiring episode with two thoughtful and articulate dads who are representative of the community of dedicated parents that make Gracie Botany the incredible academy it is.
In this episode of Sav Stories, Sav invites Ifa - one of the children's coaches from Gracie Botany -  on to the pod to chat about all things kids competition. From preparing them in the academy prior to the competition to support on the day, this episode had so much content we had to split it into two parts! Perfect for (understandably) nervous parents wanting more information about what happens once their kid signs up for a comp.
In Episode 7 of Sav's Stories, Benny and Sav take a break from our roster of guests and take it all the way back to the beginning -  white belt. Starting with a chat about White Belt Foundation Classes, this episode discusses Sav's own white belt experiences as well as the discovery of his passion for teaching Foundation Classes. And in continuing the white theme, the Sway Man joins us in his first appearance to discuss gi care and hygiene including the contentious topic of belt washing.  Why is Pat on the cover? Listen to find out!
In this highly anticipated episode of Sav's Stories, we invited Chrys, Sirena & Wendy on the pod to chat about women in BJJ and the growth of women's classes. We also took the opportunity to discuss their success in some high level competition. To say that we are looking forward to having them back as guests is an understatement!
In our fifth episode of Sav' Stories we invited Owen Gee Kee from Gracie Miranda to sit down with Sav and discuss their shared journey to black belt - although who got to black first is entirely unimportant!. From how and where they started as white belts to opening Gracie Underdog together (great name... great name!) to starting their own academies, this episode really highlights the bonds that lifelong journeys through Brazilian Jiu Jitsu create.
Episode 4 of Sav’s Stories features Sav’s son Kianoa who has recently been awarded his green belt (and if you haven’t seen a picture of THAT hug go and check out our insta). Kianoa discusses competing at a high level, learning from defeat and his love of working with his dad at Gracie Botany. A great episode for kids and adults alike and a really heartwarming episode about a father and son’s shared passion.
In our 3rd episode of Sav Stories, Sav and Benny welcome their first guest from outside of @graciebotany - Lucas Sachs from Gracie Artarmon. In his chat on the podcast prior to competing in the IBJJF comp in Melbourne (he won! 🎉🎉🎉), Lucas shares his philosophy about competing, his comp prep and nervous p! We are so incredibly grateful to Lucas for sharing such a sincere and entertaining insight into the preparation of a true BJJ champion and a really really nice guy!
In this episode Sav covers everything from coffee to techniques he picked up in a seminar with Kaynan Duarte and somewhere in there he chats with this weeks guest - Christian about the start of the bromance that brought them to Gracie Botany
In this first episode get introduced to Sav - owner and Professor of Gracie Botany. Listen to the story of how he began his Jiu Jitsu journey as well as his first trip to the homeland of Jiu Jitsu in Brazil.
