Advent Day 17 - New Riff 6 Year Old Malted RyeMade entirely from malted rye, this is a subtle sipper.Ken Lewis has been selling Spirits for more than thirty years. He owned and ran one of the most successful retail stores in the country — The Party Source in Bellevue, Kentucky. He sold the company to his employees in 2014 and used the funds to launch New Riff Distillery with co-founder Jay Erisman in Newport that same year — just across the river from Cincinnati, Ohio. As head distiller Brian Sprance was distilling Spirits and laying down casks for aging, they sourced Spirits from MGP in Indiana and sold them under the O.K.I. band (now retired). They are now releasing their own complete line of house-crafted Spirits and are an official stop on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail.New Riff Malted Rye 6 Years Old is a bonded Whiskey that’s made entirely from malted rye. Now, that’s not unseen but it is rare. The result is much more subtle than unmalted rye and begins with a light and sweet nose that evolves into a fruity and malty palate with apple, fresh berries, and brown sugar. Advent Day 12 - Westward Whiskey Single Malt Stout Cask Finish A unique and complex 5-part blend of grain, pot-still, and malt Irish Whiskey.Founded in 2004 when there were only three dozen distillers in the USA, Westward is going stronger than ever today when there are more than 2000 in the country. Guess they are doing something right, right? In a completely new way of thinking about Whiskey, Westward has put this holy Spirit on a pedestal, proclaiming no tradition or whiskey-making process to be too holy to be reconsidered - if that means the Whiskey might be better for it. So they make things a bit differently. Building their flavor from scratch, by brewing pale ale from local Northwest malted barley and intensifying it by double distillation in custom low-reflux pot stills, they transform the fresh pale ale into a robust, bold, and exquisitely balanced Whiskey. When the Westward Distillery brews its pale ale, they don’t only produce a starting vase for its Whiskey, but also some nice ale-infused barrels. Those barrels are then sent to their brewing collaborators from Oregon, famous for their brewing culture, to be filled with deep, rich stout, pushing the boundaries of flavor these casks are able to produce. Once filled with stout flavor, they are returned to Westward, where, you guessed it, they are filled with some neat Westward Single Malt. Maturing in ex-ale, ex-stout casks for one year, this spectacular award-winning Single Malt takes on notes of caramel, chocolate, and toffee. Advent Day 10 - Two Stacks The First Cut Irish WhiskeyA unique and complex 5-part blend of grain, pot-still, and malt Irish Whiskey.Two Stacks was launched in 2020 by a group of 3 friends ― Shane McCarthy, Donal McLynn, and Liam Brogan ― who had spent 6 years working together in the craft beverage importing and distribution business. With the Irish Whiskey Renaissance well underway, they deemed the time was ripe for a proper Whiskey brand ― a contemporary brand, built upon Irish Whiskey's rich heritage. They borrowed the name from the two chimney stacks of the Dundalk distillery that were so tall that seamen used them as a navigation point.They have their own distillery, but as it's the smallest in Ireland, they source Whiskey from other independent distilleries for their blends. The First Cut is an approachable 86-proof dram that comes from Dundalk's Great Northern Distillery. It comprises light & dark grain Whiskeys (80%), double & peated Malts (12%), and pot-still Whiskey (8%). Each of these brings a desirable component to the profile that has spice, fruity esters, and a touch of peat. At the time of recording, Kinsale Liquor in Olathe was the only store around that had this finished in not one cask, but two! Oloroso Sherry AND Cognac casks! Born to Irish immigrants in Kentucky, she married John Dowling, owner of Waterfill & Frazier Distillery. When he passed away, she took over the distillery like a boss! When fire razed the distillery, she rebuilt it. When Prohibition came knocking with false bootlegging charges? She relocated to Mexico and kept the whiskey flowing. That's what we call grit!Their high rye Kentucky Bourbon, finished in Tequila barrels, salutes Mary's resilience. It opens with a subtle blend of spice and anise, adorned with soft floral notes. Then comes the surprise - a touch of agave mingling with citrus, grapefruit, smoke, tobacco, and nutmeg. The finish? A spicy combo of black pepper and lasting spice.
