Hey Scaredy Cats. For the longest time, I had one movie on my to watch list that was my white whale. I had seen it lauded as one of the scariest movies ever and the best horror movie you’ve never seen. I was on the hunt. It wasn’t streaming anywhere in Canada and I had resigned myself to never seeing it. But then I saw an announcement on Twitter that it was being released on blu ray by Second Sight Films. So, of course, I preordered it and paid an obscene amount of money for a movie I had never watched, assuming that internet listicles were not lying to me and that it was indeed an incredible film. That film was Lake Mungo. I know, I know, no one goes to camp in January, but when you’re stuck in the frozen tundra that is Ontario in the winter, you gotta do what you gotta do. As a kid growing up in the eighties, slashers were all the rage. Some of the first horror movies I saw were eighties slashers. So, I definitely have a soft spot for them and the more ridiculous the better. When I heard that there was a love letter to the subgenre with a soft marshmallow centre, I knew it was the kind of movie that I needed in my life. Did I mention that I listened to Bette Davis Eyes on repeat back in the day? Ok, so you couldn’t exactly listen to something on repeat back then. You had two options. You either made a tape with just that song on it OR you would take a couple of minutes, rewind and play again. But I digress. In 1978, one of the greatest horror movie franchises was born. Only two years later, another one would enter the world of horror, but weirdly enough, the villain that we associate with that franchise was really just another victim in the first installment. This swerve is so famous that it even became part of another horror movie franchise, when Ghostface first asked Casey Becker, who was the killer in the first Friday the 13th movie. Hey Scaredy Cats. I still remember when I found out that Santa wasn’t real. I’m going to peel back the curtain a little bit here and admit one of my embarrassing secrets. I was in grade seven, standing in line for French class. A bunch of my classmates were making fun of me for believing in Santa because generally by the age of eleven you know the truth. But not me. Whether I was just incredibly naïve or my parents were just really good liars, or a bit of both, I still believed. To this day, one of my favourite teacher was that French teacher, Mr. Ikasala, because he came out of the classroom, overheard what was happening and said that he still believed in Santa Claus. I knew then that he was just trying to make me feel better, but it meant a lot. The illusion may have been destroyed, but I didn’t become a Christmas obsessed and homicidal Santa. Hey Scaredy Cats. There’s a line in the song It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year that goes “there’ll be scary ghost stories and tales of the glories of Christmases long long ago” It may seem odd to us now, but telling spooky stories at Christmas was a tradition that saw its peak during the Victorian era in Great Britain. The most famous example is probably A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, but many writers in the late 19th and early 20th century published ghost stories that would be read around a fire as the nights grew longer and colder. So why ghost stories? Christmas is supposed to be festive and joyful, right? Take into consideration that Christmas is inextricably tied with pagan traditions that marked the winter solstice. Pagans believed that the winter solstice was when the veil between the living and dead was at its thinnest. Yule has been linked to The Wild Hunt, a ghostly procession in the sky and increased supernatural activity. So, what did folks do when the nights were long and cold and they didn’t have a whole lot of other diversions? They would tell spooky stories by the fire, some of which were passed down orally. With the Industrial Revolution, these stories could now be printed and stories like A Christmas Carol became popular in periodicals and books. The trend may not have caught on in North America, but as someone who wants to consume spooky things all year round, it’s a tradition that I’ve embraced over the past few years. And now, I’d like to share some of these stories with you. For the seven days leading up to Christmas, we’ll be releasing one story a day. Hey Scaredy Cats. In the mid eighties, monster movies just weren’t the trend in horror. The genre was dominated by slashers like Friday the 13th. In 1984, we had movies like Silent Night, Deadly Night, Friday the 13th: the Final Chapter (spoiler alert, it wasn’t) and probably most importantly of all, A Nightmare on Elm Street. But the horror writers and directors of the eighties would have grown up with the Hammer horror movies, so it was inevitable that someone would have come along to revitalize the monster movie, or more specifically, the vampire movie. Extra Life is an organization that was founded in Texas in 2008 and they’ve raised over $100 million USD to support children’s hospitals. They help fund critical treatments or pediatric medical equipment, ensure that hospitals can provide charitable care and cover specialized services that may not be covered by insurance.
