Pending home sales came in flat below expectations, though Kevin Green says its still an improvement from the prior print. He adds that an uptick in mortgage applications shows prospective homebuyers are becoming more interested in the housing market. As for the FOMC, Kevin will keep an eye on commentary regarding quantitative tightening and explains that it could give a boost to financial stocks. Boeing (BA) reported a miss on Adj. EPS sending shares tumbling after its 3Q report. George Tsilis comments on the aerospace giant's outlook, citing 777x delays and a $636B backlog on its commercial side weighing on shares. Meanwhile, Caterpillar (CAT) surges to all-time highs despite raising forecasted costs from tariffs. George points to the 17% rise in energy & transportation revenue as a boon for the industrial name. For Verizon (VZ), George says sales missed by about $500M with a dip in wireless subscribers and a rise in broadband subscribers. Kevin Green kicks off the trading day with his eyes overseas. He's watching developments with China ahead of Pres. Trump and Pres. Xi's highly-anticipated meeting, with particular attention to the soybean trade. KG notes positive commentary around a trade deal with South Korea. Domestically, the Fed's decision to cut rates by 25bps is largely anticipated, but KG says investors should pay attention to quantitative tightening (QT) measures by the central bank. He says if the Fed changes course on QT it could help push mortgage rates down, which could help not only homebuyers but also homebuilders. On the earnings front, KG looks at Boeing's (BA) "stabilizing report" and Caterpillar's (CAT) revenue growth thanks in part to the buildout in A.I. data centers. For today's session, he's looking at S&P 500 (SPX) upside to $6960, with downside to $6850. Dean Smith believes the Fed has already telegraphed a 25bps rate cut for its October meeting. However, he thinks the central bank is making a mistake. Dean dives into the latest non-farm payrolls data and examines the slowdown in jobs growth as a reason why the Fed's rate cut won't "do anything" to bring those workers back. In terms of the Fed's dual mandate, he stresses that the focus should remain on inflation and not the labor market. Lawrence Nelson is with the majority of investors in believing a rate cut is coming today. He's looking ahead on the Fed's calendar and will be listening to what the central bank's thinking might be for the December meeting. Lawrence weighs in on the elevated inflation levels above their target, but notes the "tricky spot" for the Fed as labor markets cool. In terms of dissent among the Fed's decision, Lawrence believes newly appointed Stephen Miran will be the biggest proponent for a larger rate cut while Jeff Schmidt could maintain the current rate and oppose further cutting.
