Justin Jay Johnson’s story is nothing short of extraordinary. Before the age of 11, he survived two near-death experiences, endured 34 surgeries, lived with only a 1 in 10 chance of survival, and was told he would never speak again. For over a year he couldn’t eat food, and for years he breathed through a hole in his throat. Well, folks. Here we are. 365 days in a row writing on LinkedIn. Rain or shine. Without fail. Kind of hard to believe, especially considering the year it’s been. I’ve written from many locations in the world:  Trains in Switzerland, mountains in Europe, planes, Lyfts, airports, hotels, restaurants, Chicago, Death Valley, Louisiana, yoga studios, football games, gyms, the stair stepper, my car, my friend’s car, my friend’s friend’s car, New Jersey, Palm Springs, San Diego, Portland, LA, Austin, Minnesota, Kelowna, emergency rooms, my home, my parent's home  -  The list is literally endless.  But regardless where we were in the world, or what was going on, The work got done. The writing got published. One day. One post.  At a time. I’ve developed a very personal relationship with writing throughout this experience.  Writing has been my therapist. My confidant.  My superpower.  My release. It’s brought me clarity and confusion, direction and wonder, worry and excitement, laughter and tears.  It’s re-triggered forgotten dreams, and sparked dreams for others.  It's even brought me incredible connections and friends with people I would have never met otherwise.  It's challenged me to grow in ways I never thought I would, and forced me to continuously show up for others, and for myself. It takes a lot for me to feel a strong sense of pride... but this one feels good. And just to think it all started with one simple question from friend and mentor, Ian Koniak: “𝑾𝒉𝒐 𝒘𝒂𝒏𝒕𝒔 𝒕𝒐 𝒋𝒐𝒊𝒏 𝒎𝒆 𝒊𝒏 𝒂 𝒚𝒆𝒂𝒓-𝒍𝒐𝒏𝒈 𝒄𝒉𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒆𝒏𝒈𝒆?” Surround yourself with high caliber people, lead a high caliber life. The entire trajectory of my life was altered this year with these two ideas: 1. Trusting my gut 2. The quote below 👇🏽 Let’s start with the quote in one of Sahil Bloom’s newsletters that, when I read it, stopped me dead in my tracks: “𝐈𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞, 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐛𝐞 𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐭𝐨 𝐝𝐨 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐧𝐨𝐰? ”When making big, scary, potentially life-altering decisions, it can prove valuable to step out of your own situation, detach from the emotions, and see things from a bird’s eye view. A “unique vantage point,” Sahil mentions, to see the bigger picture and surrounding landscapes. An external perspective usually doesn’t hurt. Sometimes, even makes things obvious. ——Second - trusting your gut. Easier said than done. They say you have a second brain - the one in your gut. I’m starting to question if that might actually be our first brain. Rooted in the subconscious, supernatural, mystical realms of life. Something you can feel, but can’t quite explain. But only you truly know what you feel. Because our other brain will argue head over heart all day. And justify decisions with logic, ration, and reason, that makes total sense. And thank God for that brain. We need it. Especially in life or death situations. Or making a data-driven business decision. But, deep down, our gut instinct is a very powerful sense of reality, 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 reality, that is crucial to lean into. And trust - no matter how scary it might be.
