Together, Psalms 70 and 71 are the urgent prayers of King David in his final years. Feeling old, tired, and needy, he cries out to God. In fact, Psalm 70 is considered an emergency prayer — a 911 call to God. Moreover, it’s the type of prayer you cry out when you’ve hit rock bottom or you’re stuck between that inevitable rock and a hard place. It’s the prayer for when you’ve got nowhere else to turn to but up to God. After what happened in Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, you may be at a loss for words in how to pray for Israel. God has the answer. Simply, pray the Psalms. God loves it when you pray His words back to Him! Because of illness, I'm not publishing a new Sunday Psalm for today. However, given the war in Israel, I wanted to repost the Psalms of Ascents. Jews sang these psalms as they ascended into Jerusalem for the High Holy Days. These 15 psalms, from 120-134, are organized in 5 groups of 3. Each triad takes us from trouble, trust, and triumph. They speak of trouble and call to God, confirm their trust in the Lord, and then triumph in the Lord’s victory over their problems. No matter what’s going on in the world right now, our one and only HOPE is KING JESUS! That’s what we have to keep in mind every day. Many of the psalms are prophetic. That is, they tell of Jesus’ coming Kingdom to give us that confident hope. It’s New Year’s Eve 2022 and it seems the world is coming to an end. Reported news stories sound like they are ripped from Jesus’ Olivet Discourse in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke. As your read these few, you have to admit that the birth pains are getting stronger and more frequent. The purpose of the Old Testament is not only to tell the story of the Israelites, what God did for them and how they rebelled. Its true purpose is to predict the coming of the “anointed one” or Messiah, who would bring not just salvation to a broken world, but justice and everlasting peace. Moreover, there are 16 psalms that are considered Messianic Psalms, with all or part of them undoubtedly proclaiming the coming Messiah — Jesus. When you look at everything that’s going on in the world right now, do wonder, “What’s going on?” Interestingly enough, Jesus predicted everything that’s happening today almost 2000 years ago! King David probably wrote Psalm 32 after Psalm 51 where he confessed his sin with Bathsheba. It’s a song of forgiveness. It encourages us to confess our sins to God (not a priest!) to experience being blessed and forgiven. When you look at everything that’s going on in the world right now, do wonder, “What’s going on?” Interestingly enough, Jesus predicted everything that’s happening today almost 2000 years ago! It’s all in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke. Paul also warned us about the Last Days, as did John, the Revelator, and the prophets of the Old Testament! Going forward, each Saturday, I’ll present a wrap-up or summary of the week’s news and match it to something in the Bible. You’d think that once King David was ruling all of Israel that he wouldn’t feel shame, but he did. It’s enough for him to unload his feelings to God in this psalm. It’s really easy for us to feel ashamed of our past sins. Even the ones you’ve tried to bury. Somehow, with the help of Satan, those bad, shameful deeds rise from the depths of our memories. That’s when you need to trust your life to Jesus. Incidentally, passages from this psalm are quoted by Jeremiah, Jonah, and Jesus. See if you can pick out one of Jesus’ famous last words. Advent is here! Advent, it’s the season when most of the world prepares to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. Though we don’t know exactly when Jesus was born — even the year is fuzzy — the early church leaders chose December 25th, a pagan festival day, for the celebration. It was a marketing ploy to get Romans to accept Christianity in the 1st century. (It’s amazing how many pagan rituals were adopted by the church back then, just to appease the pagan Romans.) Why didn’t they just look at the Book of the Prophet Isaiah? He is the most-quoted of the prophets in the New Testament — 21 times! Isaiah’s name means, “the Lord has saved”, which confirms why Jesus came into the world and became human — to save the world through Him. That, my friend, is the Good News of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
