Today’s guest is Philedelphia based composer Melissa Dunphy. She is an award winning composer of vocal, chamber, and choral music, and is involved in many different initiatives advancing and advocating for the needs of composers and artists, as well as, believe it or not, arcaheology.
Our conversation was a little bit all over the map but kept coming back to this idea of things composers don’t get taught in school that they need to know.
Google results for Melissa will turn up many other video and podcast appearances where she shares invaluable information for composers and I’m very grateful to now add this episode to the list and be sure to stick around to the end of the episode to hear two examples of her recent work.

Today’s guest is Brittain Ashford, executive director of the Music Publishers Association, a trade organization focused on education and advocacy of issues pertaining to music publishing and print music. Their website, mpa.org has a wealth of free information and resources pertaining to copyright as well as information about their partnerships with other music organizations. We had a great conversation about the work of the MPA, the things self publishers need to know about copyright, and the massive debt we, as a society, owe to the player piano.

This week I am *on location* in the Nashville office of Musicnotes.com to talk with the hosts of their brand new podcast "Behind the Notes," Lucas Koehler and Jillian Shively!
In addition to their podcasting duties, Lucas works for Musicnotes as a Product Management Specialist and Jillian as a Content & Production Assistant. They had a lot of great insights to share from their years of helping composers (like myself) publish their music.
Composers, Arrangers, and Songwriters can visit the Musicnotes Marketplace to sell their scores on the Musicnotes website, and artists on YouTube can also look in to becoming a Musicnotes Signature Artist.

My guest today, trombonist and arranger Christopher Bill, is the most subscribed brass musician on YouTube. His all-trombone content has amassed more than 85 million views and over 500,000 followers. He is an active educator on the trombone festival circuit and publishes sheet music of his arrangements on his website classical trombone.com. I really admire the approach he’s taken with his career and he had a lot of things to say that I think will be extremely helpful to anyone trying to build an audience online. We also talk about what it really means to go viral, how to take advantage of vertical video, and at the end of the episode we’ll listen to two of his arrangements.
