Join us for a fun mix of some great music.
It's been a while since the last edition of our "Deep Diggin'" series - which doesn't mean that we're not always diggin' deep for you. On tonight's Midnight Soulstice, we welcome you to join "Deep Diggin' 3", with Mr. Felty playing some of his hottest Soul and Funk 45s for you. We hope you'll tune in - it's gonna be a great show.
Many true Funk head are not really feeling Disco - with good reason, because Disco is said to have killed Funk. Ironically, there are still some excellent disco records that emerged out of an era otherwise known for "Y.M.C.A." and "That's the way (I like it)".
Tonight, Mr. Felty once again digs deep in his crates to present his second volume of funky Disco tracks - if you keep an open mind, you will love this one!
Our Rare Funk special in May turned out to be one of our most successful downloads ever. Consequently, we believe that it's time for a follow-up - a second volume of rare, old, stinky, nitty-gritty Funk. While Mr. Felty enjoyed his well deserved time-out on the beaches of South Carolina, DJ Pari spent the last four days going through his Funkatalog to dig out more treasures for you.
We'll dedicate tonight's show to the Fatback Band, without a doubt one of the greatest Funk groups ever. Period. Most popular in the 1970s and 1980s, the Fatback Band is most known for their Top Ten R&B hits, "(Do The) Spanish Hustle", "I Like Girls", "Gotta Get My Hands on Some (Money)", and "Backstrokin'". Their 1979 single "King Tim III (Personality Jock)" is considered by many to be the first rap single.
We had already picked out some excellent Soul grooves for tonight's show, when the news reached us yesterday that Michael Jackson had passed away. We're still going through with our initial concept of playing all rare Soul grooves in the next couple of hours, but we'll drop a couple of early Jackson tunes to pay our respect to this legend.
Some say that Funk is dead. We passionately argue against that. In fact, we claim that Funk has never been more widespread than today, thanks to the Internet and globalization. Tonight, we'll present the second volume of our New Funk series (after the first one in December becoming a popular download). We'll hope you'll enjoy the show - two hours of New Funk and Soul from all over the world.
On tonight's Midnight Soulstice, we'll show some love to the Soul Sisters in Funk music. We all know that especially in the 1960s, when Funk started, it was the female vocalists who had to put up with the most bullshit, trying to find a place next to the male singers who were the big stars (and who did not tolerate competition, especially from women!) . These ladies were terribly overlooked back in the day. So tonight, let's celebrate the Sisters in Funk.
DJ Pari is not in the studio tonight so I decided to jam out to some funky disco type records of the late 70's to early 80's. All original records with a few rarities out of Richmond and Petersburg. ~Crank it up yall~
Tonight is a great night for every Funk fan! We are extremely proud to have one of our musical heros on our show.Join us in a review of the great music of Sir Joe Quarterman.
It's been so damn funky on Midnight Soulstice in recent weeks, we'd like to change the pace a bit for tonight. Even those of you who are not too familiar with the vast legacy of Jazz music, know the obvious picks by anyone from Satchmo, Duke, Charlie, Miles, Trane up to Diana Krall. But on tonight's show, we'll take you to The Other Side of Jazz.
Wow, we were overwhelmed by the amazing feedback for last week's Rare Funk Special! Thanks to everyone who listened in. We'll make sure to bring you another one of those Funk monster shows sometime in the near future. In fact, tonight's show will be quite similar and no less exciting.
On last week's Midnight Soulstice, we took you way back to the deep South, to the very beginnings of Soul music. On tonight's show, we'd like to bring you the Funk. Raw, uncut, untamed, dirty, lowdown, nitty-gritty, gut bucket - you name it. And most of all, rare. We won't play the usual choices, but unknown tracks by rather unknown artists. Mr. Felty is out of town tonight, so it will be DJ Pari diggin' in his collection of rare Funk gems for you.
You know you can always expect quality sounds on Midnight Soulstice. And on tonight's show, we want to take you all the way back to the roots of Soul music. We agree with how the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame defines Soul – as “music that arose out of the black experience in America through the transmutation of gospel and rhythm & blues into a form of funky, secular testifying.” Sounds deep, don't it?
After the many guests we had on our show in recent weeks, tonight's edition is going to be raw, uncut Midnight Soulstice. This week, we we dug deep into our crates and fished out some vinyl that we haven't played on this format yet. Some of it is rare, some of it not so rare, but we promise that the sounds caressing your ear-drums tonight will be the finest that the genres of Funk and Soul have to offer.
We've been waiting to a while to get tonight's guest on our show. Needless to say that we're really excited to have him on Midnight Soulstice tonight - Richmond's own Plunky! Best known for putting together his 1970s Afro-Funk-extravaganza Oneness of Juju, Plunky has recently re-invented himself as a Funk artist who is one of the few of this genre who gets play on national radio and even earned a Grammy nomination last year. Check out the show!!!
It almost feels like summer here in the VA, and of course we all know that "Everybody loves the Sunshine". Remember the Roy Ayers hit? RAMP was a group produced by Roy Ayers back in the 1970s, and they released one album on Blue Thumb records titled "Come into Knowledge". Due to lack of promotion, the album failed to chart and the group dismantled shortly after, but the music was here to stay forever. Check out our two hour special including conversations with members of the band and there music
Tonight's Midnight Soulstice is all about Latin Soul, Latin Funk, Latin Jazz, Boogaloo and Salsa - everything that's got clave! And because we wanted someone on the show who really knows this music, we invited DJ Rattan aka Rai, lead singer for Richmond's own Soulsa sensation Bio Ritmo, to join us live in the studio.
