We discussed this article from USA Today on our podcast "Shalom from the Galilee" The Alzheimer's segment starts at [10:11] Here are some article highlights and study results: Temple University research shows extra-virgin olive oil protects against memory loss, preserves the ability to learn and reduces conditions associated with Alzheimer's disease.Researchers at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine found mice with EVOO-enriched diets had better memories and learning abilities than those who didn't eat the oil. Neuron connections in the brain were better preserved in those on an EVOO diet. Also, olive oil reduces brain inflammation and activates the process, to remove debris and toxins from the brain. Such debris and toxins are firm markers of Alzheimer's disease. The two groups of mice didn't differ in appearance after months on their respective diets. However after 9 and 12 months those on an EVOO diet tested better on working and spatial memory and learning abilities. Since the EVOO helped preserve the body's ability to remove debris and toxins in the brain,  memory and synaptic integrity were preserved, and the pathological effects in animals otherwise destined to develop Alzheimer's disease were significantly reduced. Chana and I made Aliyah (immigrated to Israel) from Canada in 1983. Our move was fairly simple except for a freak March snowstorm which delayed our EL AL flight from Montreal. As mundane as our move was, we felt we were part of the fulfillment of the ancient prophecy of the ingathering of the exiles. The "Beta Israel" community had been located in rural villages in Ethiopia. They traced their roots to the tribe of Dan. Representatives from the Chief Rabbinate of Israel investigated their customs and laws and decreed they should be brought home to Israel under the Law of Return. Because the political situation in Ethiopia was so volatile, these Ethiopians were not allowed to officially leave the country. So a clandestine operation was set up by the IDF called Operation Moses. and many Ethiopians made the dangerous trek through the desert to Sudan where they were secretly airlifted to Israel. 8000 people were eventually airlifted to Israel.
