Season Finale

2022-06-0658:13

Today, we have a bittersweet announcement: listeners, we have reached the end of season one, making this a season finale for our bright-eyed and bushy tailed project… possibly a series finale. This episode is going to be a little different. Instead of running a single interview, we’re actually going to be running two interviews—two catch up chats with some of our favorite guests on the show, just to investigate where they were when we first found them, and what they’ve been up to since their episode aired. For the first time, I’m writing a bio completely off the top of my head because, for my family, this week’s guest is a hero. Our guest, Margaret Cho is a comedian, activist, actress, and so much more. She has helped create ground-breaking television shows such as All American Girl, and nine notorious comedy specials. She has uplifted people who feel like misfits, including queer people like me. And she's here to tell us all about how she got to where she is today.  Learn more about your ad choices. This week, She's a Woman is throwing it back to this classic episode: Check out Cat Cohen's new special, now streaming on Netflix! A self-described “millennial Renaissance woman,” Catherine Cohen is an American comedian, actress, and performer. She is known for her comedy cabaret live performances, where she delights audiences with hilariously random songs . She has been named one of the "comedians to watch" on lists produced by Vulture and Time Out. She has a new book out, God I Feel Modern Tonight: Poems from a Gal About Town. And now she’s here on our distinguished podcast. Follow Cat Cohen on Twitter: @catcohen Follow She's a Woman Podcast on IG: @shesawomanpodcast. Carla Lalli Music is an American chef, cookbook author, and YouTube personality. She is very well known for her appearances in the popular Back-to-Back Chef video series, which is how we met her. She had the privilege of cooking alongside both Chef Cracker AND Dr. Dill. But now Carla is launching a whole new chapter of her life. She’s launching a podcast. She has released this incredible new cookbook that I’ve been diddling around with, called That Sounds So Good, too. She’s about to go big again. And that’s what we want to find out about today. Audrey Finney: Sell What You Love! Audrey Finney is the marketing guru for my current "She's a Woman" tour. But to say that she is just a "marketer" would be an understatement. She has spent the majority of her life traveling the world, listening to music, and telling people why they should too. She’s a branding brainiac with a knack for artistic organization and controlled chaos—she has organized countless tours and events.  Learn more about your ad choices. We talk to the "Head B in Charge" of Miz Cracker's "She's a Woman Tour," Kristin Gypsy Schloesser. She keeps the whole operation rolling. She’s been a tour coordinator for rock bands, rappers, drag queens, and me. But she’s also a fierce advocate for people in recovery from addiction, especially queer people.  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
Today, we have a guest who has brought laughter and inspiration to people all over the world. Her name is Ilona Maher, she’s an Olympic athlete, a Tik Tok star, an all round incredible person. Since high school, she’s been leading athletic teams to victory in field hockey, basketball, and softball. But last year, she not only participated in the 2021 summer Olympics, she gave the world a glimpse into Olympian life through her hilarious Tik Tok, which still has people captivated today—people like yours truly.  Learn more about your ad choices. Victoria Scone is a fantastically talented drag queen who hails from Cardiff in Wales. But she’s also a groundbreaking figure because she is the first cis woman to compete on RuPaul’s Drag Race. For anyone who's new to drag, you heard me right—she's a woman who dresses as a woman. Or should I say as a WOMAAAAAN. Scone’s time on Drag Race was cut short by an injury, but everyone is praying she’ll be welcomed back for another season. Today Scone is a touring artist, an influencer, an icon in my eyes. But as she puts it, she’s simply a “celesbian.”  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Caitlin Reilly: Funny Girl!

Caitlin Reilly: Funny Girl!

2021-09-1301:01:21

If you take a scroll through TikTok's For You page on any given day, you'll likely encounter footage of Caitlin Reilly doing what she does best: impersonating people you love to hate. The 31-year-old actress catapulted herself into the TikTok spotlight in 2020, attracting nearly 2 millions followers who can't get enough of the painfully accurate and oddly specific characters she's created. She attracted the attention of this podcast because not only is she hilarious, but her parodies sometimes have an important point: they often critique how women are portrayed in film and television. And we love that. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
Since graduating from Yale in 1967, Judith Bernstain has developed a reputation as one of the most unwaveringly provocative artists of her generation. Steadfast in her cultural, political, and social critique for over 50 years, Bernstein surged into art world prominence in the early 1970s with her monumental charcoal drawings of objects that look like a cross between a penis and a screw. Early incarnations of these drawings were exhibited at AIR Gallery, Brooklyn Museum, and MoMA P.S.1, among other institutions. Today she creates incredible large-scale paintings that glow with color, incorporate massive vaginas as well, and address the politics of our time fearlessly.  Learn more about your ad choices. Amanda Suter owns her own vintage clothing business, which helps her share her personal passion for vintage clothing with the world and her clients! It has always made her sad to hear people complain that vintage is too fancy or costume-y to be worn everyday. For her, vintage clothes are very versatile. People can wear one piece or a whole ensemble, look fabulous, and ignore what other people think! That’s her motto—ignore what other people think. For Amanda, Vintage is about self expression and timeless personal style. There's a piece of vintage clothing for everyone, and if you can envision it, most likely she will have it for you! Kamie Crawford is a TV host, model and former Miss Teen USA. She has always had a passion for investigative journalism and has put her own skills to the test while working alongside Nev Schulman as the co-host of MTV's hit series "Catfish”—which is how we met and fell in love with her. Working as a model in a fashion world that deems anything over a size 4 as "plus-sized" and in a digital space that often lacks inclusion has sparked Kamie to use her influence to spread the importance of body positivity and diversity in the digital sphere and beyond. Perle Noire: Burlesque!

2021-07-1201:08:16

According to 21st Century Burlesque, Perle Noire has danced on stages from the Teatro Circo in Madrid to the Sydney Opera House, brought home Best Debut at the Burlesque Hall Of Fame in 2008, and toured with Dita Von Teese’s Strip Strip Hooray! in both iterations. But more importantly, she’s family—she’s performed with me many times, and I have to say her style is nothing short of mesmerizing.  Check out Perle's website: https://blackburlesquequeen.com/ You can listen and subscribe to us on your favorite podcast platform https://bit.ly/ShesAWomanPodcast If you wanna support the show, and get all the episodes ad free go to https://shesawoman.supercast.tech/. Kim-Joy is best known for her turn on The Great British Bake Off. Her birthday falls on World Baking Day, which she takes as the surest sign there can be that she was born to bake. Born in Belgium to an English father and Malaysian–Chinese mother, she grew up in London, studied in both Bristol and Leeds, and now lives in Leeds with her partner. She has an open attitude to all styles of baking, loving rustic baking just as much as she loves creating cute bakes with an emphasis on detail. But her story is a little more complicated than you might think—she’s an advocate for mental health whose life has taken many turns.
