Description
We’re Hannah and Jordyn, two new grad nurses just wanting to shed some light on the things no one tells you about being a nurse. Each week we will be discussing different topics such as current events in the medical field, social issues, and personal experiences and tell you how they’ve affected us as people and how we’re getting through it. We’re apart of a community and profession that often times leaves us feeling lost and alone, and we’d like to change that. We hope you'll stick around, and enjoy listening about our side effects of nursing!

In this episode we recap Hannah’s first year of nursing. For Hannah and for so many other new grads, it was nothing but pangs of self doubt over and over again. Am I going to make a mistake? Will I hurt someone? What if I’m a bad nurse? Will it ever get easier? Suddenly you can’t remember anything you learned all those years in school, you’re unsure of every decision you make, and you’d love nothing more than to run. Hannah talks about how those feelings impacted her first year as a nurse and how it eventually bled into her personal life as well. New nurses, old nurses, every single nurse needs support because at the end of the day we’re not just nurses, we’re humans too. We’re so busy caring for others that we forget to care for ourselves. The burnout rates are astronomical, nurses are leaving the profession altogether, and there will never be any change unless we start speaking up about our individual experiences when we lacked support and how it changed us. We hope you enjoy this episode, and if you’ve been through something similar as a new grad or even if you’re a seasoned nurse and experienced some of the things discussed in this episode, please consider sending us a DM and sharing your story.
In this episode we discuss Vaginas. There, you’ve been warned. However, Vagina isn’t a bad word. Some of us have been taught to use something cutesy or slang in its place...but it’s okay to say Vagina. And if you feel bad for saying Vagina...have you noticed how much the world tries to make you feel bad for having one too? Recently, we’ve seen just how much the media (especially TikTok) has played a part in shaming women for having vaginas, and often giving them new insecurities to feel ashamed of on top of it. It got us thinking; why do people, companies, and the media work so hard to make us feel bad, and worse...why do we believe them? We discuss the feminine hygiene industry, social media, and more as we try to figure out why your shame equals money made via predatory marketing. We realize this subject might be uncomfortable for some listeners, but that’s why we recorded it. We don’t want anyone to be uncomfortable or ashamed of their bodies anymore, so we’ve included resources that connect you to creators and content that help break down those icky feelings surrounding the body you have and should be very proud of. We hope you enjoy this episode and perhaps it might even change your perspective on a few things as well.
This podcast episode has been in the making for quite a while. Our plan was to publish this episode at the end of 2020 as a way to close the year on a lighter note and allow those of you who are listening to know us as something other than nurses. But like most things, it didn’t happen the way we wanted it to. In fact, after it was recorded in early December we hated the end result and decided we would re-record after Christmas. After Christmas became after the new year became the end of January, and now here we are mid February. So now this episode has become our (official) start to 2021 and will set the tone for the year ahead, and we’re okay with that because it captures who we are as people and as friends. We are messy twenty-somethings just kind of fumbling through hoping that whoever is listening can connect with us in some way. Please enjoy this episode of Side Effects where we answer random questions from the internet in the hopes that our answers will be moderately interesting for your listening pleasure. Hi guys! We are back with another nursing school episode, this time its Jordyn's turn to talk about her experience. Join us as she dives into the darker side of nursing school, and talks vulnerably about how her mental health was affected during this time. TW: suicidal ideation is discussed In this episode, but we felt like we needed to be as honest as possible. Thanks as always for listening, and enjoy.
Hi guys! This is a short episode in between our nursing school experience just to give some context on why we decided to take such a different approach to our podcast. We feel like it's time to discuss the part of nursing school that is not talked about, the negative side. Mental health is something that is very important to both of us and we felt like we would be doing a disservice if we did not talk about it freely. As always, thank you for listening and we hope you enjoy Jordyn's episode next week!
For the next two episodes we are talking about our nursing school experiences and the toll it took on our lives. This week its Hannah's turn, listen as she details the ups and downs of her time in nursing school, and how her personal life often shaped her experience as a student nurse. Enjoy!
