Description

A chilling wave of murders sweeps through Little Haiti, a Miami neighborhood that is home to many Haitian exiles. The victims are radio broadcasters, using the airwaves to demand democracy at home. Little Haiti is up in arms, calling for justice for the fallen heroes, but the investigation stalls. To this day, the masterminds remain free. And rumors persist … about cocaine trafficking, CIA assets, and transnational coups. Ana Arana, who first investigated the crimes thirty years ago, teams up with Oz Woloshyn to find answers to a case that continues to haunt her.

what would have happened if the women were left alive? absolutely nothing. no one believes rape victims, domestic violence victims, etc. "I was dragged into this house, I saw powerful men, I was raped and tortured", and no one -- not the law enforcement, not the media, not ordinary people -- would believe her. she would be treated as the criminal. so this does not explain why the women were killed. also, why target, why "select" the maquiladora workers? why gather data on them and then "select" them? there are brothels everywhere. there must be homeless girls everywhere too. these are usually people who are extremely vulnerable to violence, yaknow the "usual" prey. the more likely women that "no one notices when they disappear". the fine reputation of international industry would not be threatened if these monsters targeted their "usual", "allowed" prey. so I am skeptical that raunchy, violent sex parties and male bonding explain why the maquiladora women are targeted, why they are sur

"It's serial killers, and serial killers are an American phenomenon!" "it's drug cartels!" "it's the lack of a functioning law enforcement and Judicial system!" well aren't these lovely CONTRIBUTING reasons. it is demoralizing how blind even the smart people are to the one obvious reason: misogyny and the second-class, almost subhuman, status of women in many societies.

the Texas killing field, the west Mesa bone collector, the long Island serial killer, the Atlantic city strangler. and this series of mass graves and brutal murders of women and girls. superficial similarities between these cases, besides multiple victims, are often the indifference of law enforcement. and/or the selective targeting of victims at their most vulnerable moment.

sick of the "I have women in my family, I have to do something!" narrative. you should care about that a human being was raped and murdered regardless of whether or not you know a woman 🙄

If only the US decriminalized drugs, drug trafficking, or went after the banks that slow for money laundering. This is terrible. Time to write a few letters to Congress.

Have they considered sending a sample to the US to compare it and entered into CODIS for any known offenders? it's so incredibly close to the border I would not doubt that it's a possibly someone in the US who has committed a crime and hopping the border hoping they do not get caught.

I just heard of this podcast yesterday, and I binged the whole thing (so far) in one day. I love it. I love the song . I am so proud of the journalists who have stood their ground for justice. I love how Oz does such a great job pronouncing the Mexican words. I can't say I'm surprised by any of it, growing up in the borderland , but to hear how deep it goes is scary. Good job. I can't wait to hear the rest and I am go get Diana's book now.

Woah! Wait a second! I love this podcast but bringing Judge Kavanaugh into this is absolutely ridiculous!!! Why didn't you bring up the accusations against Joe Biden. Much stronger and deeply concerning accusations than Judge Kavanaugh. Holding powerful men accountable even if they are Democrats. It's disgusting that you played partisan politics! We need to hold ALL sides accountable even when it's inconvenient.

Such a horrible, horrible story, and real shame for Mexico! The action/inaction of Mexican authorities is despicable. Thank you, Monica and Oz, for bringing this story to us. Thanks to all the brave reporters in the world who risk their lives to do the work of law enforcement. All this suffering - so that Americans can party. That's despicable, too. And the most despicable thing is decades of useless prohibition of drugs and the pointless war on drugs. If drugs were legalized, regulated and taxed, cartels would be quickly dispatched to the trash heap of history. their whole point of existence would cease to exist. What good did alcohol prohibition in the 1920s do? Nothing but the rise of organized crime. we're living in the age of another pointless prohibition and it's costing thousands of innocent people their lives.
