Description

Maya Angelou once said, "There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you."

Silent Waves tells one true story led by 25-year-old Raquel O'Brien, as she attempts to liberate herself from the trauma of childhood sexual abuse and a father with a dark secret.

To do so, she has raw, honest and open conversations with her family about the cataclysmic circumstances of their story for the first time... and all on tape.

The idea that Pedophilia is a genuine "sexual orientation" is wrong and dangerous to children, and undermines efforts to protect children in the justice system -- as if we need THAT kind of $%^&. These guys are criminals. Framing their paraphilia as a "sexual orientation", on par with bisexuality and homosexuality, undermines victims seeking justice and creates an opportunity for a future "defense" of their crimes of sexual abuse, and further into the future a possible Avenue of eventual re-decriminalization of child sexual abuse. Pedophiles like the power they have, and the damage they cause. Beware of experts and academics who support Pedophilia as a "sexual orientation".

She is right. Our societies like to make Mothers responsible for abuse perpetrated by men. I really appreciate her comments on this.

I get Gabriel's experience of colonization and erasure and his feelings of alienation within his own family for the experience of assimilation. But doesn't your identity come from your mother, as well? What about the erasure if all your female ancestors? And why idealize and seek to cling to an abuser, who abused your mother? Why seek to cling to the culture that taught that man to be an abuser of women? It's kind of a betrayal.

The rewriting of our narratives can be painstaking, overwhelming, and terrifying -- taking us with you can be powerful medicine for those who listen as well as tell -- it is brave to own that power -- bravo to you and yours 💚

This story is so touching and its so lovely to hear the closeness this has brought you and your family together. You've all been through a hell of a lot and it's so refreshing to hear the truth about these topics. I feel the pain in it all, knowing how these mixed emotions churn and don't fully settle because you can love someone and hate someone at the same time and going back to the root of it and seeing the same cycle of abuse, its hard to have a conclusion on any belief about a person. You're all incredibly brave and inspiring and you have found a real talent in expressing the life you have lived and I really hope this helps heal a part of your lives that has been traumatic. I can't wait to hear what you have planned next, your podcast is great and I think it'll get even bigger. I'm already recommending it to friends because it's a really valuable story in adulthood, reflecting on childhood and unravelling what you thought was normal at the time and knowing and recognising as an adult, actually what I experienced wasn't a healthy or 'normal' experience. I've definitely been thinking and questioning my life today since listening to this and that's a good thing, so thank you.

Beautiful, heartbreaking, bold. An example of the power in narrative healing. Silent waves is so beautifully produced and engaging in its story telling. To quote Hannah Gatsby "laughter isn't the medicine, stories are". Thank you for creating this.
