Most people have heard the advice to get a hand check as of 400 ISO, but what about the new scanners? And are slower films really safe? Lina shares her results, and also her experiences with both helpful and aggressive airport staff.

We speak to photographer Tom Klein about his exciting book project, Transatlantic. A transatlantic voyage by ship has inspired many masterpieces of literature, especially when it was the only form of travel to distant continents. Tom’s book is very different from a classic travelogue, taking us on a wonderful journey through time. Tom is stickler for authentic detail and gives us a peek behind the scenes of his work, from cameras to film to authentic costumes.

“Good photography strikes the heart of the beholder and leaves him changed.” — Irving Penn
Jan Schlegel often quotes the statement above, and the sentiment is at the heart of his work. Jan is a master photographer and printer whose extended travels over decades as a photographer have led to series of art prints which capture the essence of people and animals in remarkable ways. He has spent literally years perfecting each process in his repertoire, from silver gelatin to platinum to salt printing.

Bryan Ciminelli is a high school art teacher in New York. He and his students are sharing their passion for film photography by demonstrating darkroom techniques in a unique way — a mobile darkroom! With a small budget but a lot of enthusiasm and creativity, Bryan built a safe, foldable darkroom enclosure with 3 square meters (32 sq feet) of workspace and a red, see-through window for curious observers. This has helped spread an interest in film photography beyond the walls of the school. Bryan shared his love of analog workflows and the joys of working with teenagers who are experiencing film as a means of self-expression as well as a valuable part of their curriculum.

Super 8 has been declared dead time and again since its birth in the mid-60s. Despite all the obituaries, it has survived countless analog and digital video formats. Much more, it is the format for creative filmmakers worldwide.
Today we discuss with Holger C. Schwaerzel the Worldwide Product Manager / Super8 at Eastman Kodak Company about this wonderful almost immortal film format. Holger has been with Kodak since 1997, and after the company’s realignment, he was specifically entrusted with the mission of pushing analog motion picture film in Super8. Currently, no one should have more insight into the current worldwide status of this wonderful format than him. Looking forward to a really great talk with a real insider where the topic of Super8 as format is been discussed!

If it’s a mechanical camera and it’s broken, Oleg can fix it! With the same spirit that sent Soviets into space, he repairs cameras of the era by understanding them from the inside out. Although he has many books, he doesn’t necessarily go by them if that would mean giving up due to lack of a specific part or tool. Oleg’s culture is one we aren’t often in touch with—it expresses its love and pride not through surface enthusiasm, but through deeply felt pauses and stories of a lifetime spent in fascination. *This episode is edited more than usual due to technical difficulties during recording.

We were blown away by Susan Burnstine’s images and are very excited to bring her story to our podcast. She shared why she makes her own cameras, why her work is so often described as “dreamlike,” and a lot more. Susan has a unique perspective on creating art through the medium of film photography: the role it can play in our everyday lives, and how it can help us as we struggle with the adjustments of “reopening” life.

Others have copied their concept since they started in 2012, but none has reached their amazingly consistent quality and customer satisfaction. Albert Roig, one of the founders of Carmencita Film Lab, spoke with us about the concepts that have made the business such a success and how they are growing and adapting.

With almost 90,000 subscribers, Nick Carver’s YouTube channel is one of the most successful film photography presences on the internet. His unique mix of real analog knowledge, enthusiasm, and informal guy-next-door manner makes him a favorite of a broad spectrum of film shooters. We talked to Nick about what he likes about shooting the unusual 6x17cm format, why he feels that analog is a healthy thing and not just a fad, and the importance of printing your images, no matter how you do it.

“New” TETENAL, two years in: where do they stand, what are they working on? Peter Rasenberger, a major investor and force behind the restructuring of the company, gives us the inside scoop. We were surprised at the direction the conversation took! Beyond individual products, Peter gave us his perspective on why the company was worth saving, and where it fits into what he sees as a likely Post-Digital Era.

Who better to kick off our conversations about the entire world of analog / film photography than the man who made us believe nothing is Impossible — Florian “Doc” Kaps. In addition to reminiscing about the (not so) Impossible Project, he speaks about SuperSense and his current multitude of ideas, some of which seem… well, improbable but worth pursuit.
We even had almost-half-an-announcement about a future partnership with a major German car manufacturer! And there was lots of inspirational conversation about what makes analog worth saving and how to do it.
