When every police officer in Miami descended on an open-air mall on New Year’s Day 2024, the internet went wild. Within hours, stories of towering shadow figures, floating cities, and secret government programs flooded social media. Today’s guest is someone we’ve admired for years, ABC 20/20 correspondent Chris Connelly. Chris has been telling powerful, human-centered stories for decades, from his days profiling the world's biggest stars at Rolling Stone and MTV to his in-depth sports reporting at ESPN to his current work at ABC, where he covers major news events and compelling true crime cases. He’s covered everything from the Olympics to high-profile criminal cases, always with that trademark mix of insight, respect, and depth. And now, he’s the host of Cold Blooded: Mystery in Alaska, a gripping new podcast about the killing of Dr. Eric Garcia in Ketchikan, Alaska. We had such a great time talking with Chris about the case, his career, his approach to storytelling, and why empathy matters when telling stories like this one. Follow Chris @chriscconnelly on Instagram.  Listen to Cold Blooded: Mystery in Alaska, out now wherever you get your podcasts. You can catch it weekly on Tuesdays in its own dedicated feed Weekly on Wednesdays in the 20/20 podcast feed.

Happening to listen to these 2 episodes on 9/11/25 that involving horrific gun violence from a horrible conservative lunatic asshole and short discussion of Charlie Kirk is.... uh, ironic. To say the least. And legit 100% unintentional.

I bet the kids were less likely to leave because that's all they ever knew. They didn't realize that what was happening was distinctly not true Amish way of life. While parents with adult/young adult children were old enough to see that no, this is beyond what it is to be Amish. This is wrong. So they got out, back to the way of life they knew beforehand. If this were a more mainstream modern family in a community where religion was less dictating of their life, it may be the other way around.

The voice is on that tape actually sound like a piece out of the podcast two hot takes. is it possible that the phone just started playing the podcast for a moment rather than it being voices from outside the phone? just a suggestion considering odd things like that happen all the time :-)

Hey, in German tradition, we put the shoes out on Dec 5, but we had our kids put Christmas wish lists/ letters to Santa in it, and he came and took the letter and left candy (usually chocolate coins). As a parent, this got me my kids' wish lists and started the holiday magic.

(Talking about large modern birds) "We have dinosaurs living among us!" Yeah, all modern birds are legitimately dinosaurs, since they evolved from dinos. They're called modern avian dinosaurs (because one of the qualifications for prehistoric dinos was that they were terrestrial- aka did not spend most of their life in water or air, like crocs and pterosaurs, which are cousins but NOT dinos). So...yeah. We legitimately have dinos living with us. We eat dinos all the time too (ex: chickens).

re the last story (with the audio): Loch Carrie isn't that far from RAF Lossiemouth, one of the busiest RAF bases in the UK, and the RAF does a LOT of training over those "middle of nowhere" parts of Scotland. Even if planes weren't readily visible, that kind of sound can travel long distances in the topography of the Highlands. I know the audio wasn't that good -- but I thought 'military jets' the instant I heard it. (And I've heard a LOT of military jets in my time!) 😁

I used to work as a caregiver for 3 years and worked with many dementia residents, and there was only 1 resident who had her phone taken away. She watched TV all day, and whenever a commercial came on saying stuff like "If you experienced/were involved with/worked at X, you might be entitled to compensation!" Every time, without fail, she'd call the number and say she was. She would also trying buying random stuff off the TV by calling the numbers. Her brother eventually removed her phone.

This episode discusses one of many reasons why I will absolutely demand to be cremated when I die. and placed in a small little grave, preferably in one of those walls at cemeteries where a bunch of the cremated people are. Takes up less room, no chance of being turned into a zombie someday, I'm not as gross. And other reasons. It's a win win! I don't want my meat sack sitting around taking up space after I die.

God Stephanie is a fucking hero and champ. Also 100% me lol. I've never fired a gun at someone, but if there's a person on or near our property who should NOT be there, I immediately go into "you best fuck off RIGHT NOW" mode and get super defensive. I'll stand outside and stare at them with my arms crossed, turn on the porch light at night and stare at them out the front door for a minute so they get the hint, yell at them to ask what the hell are they doing, etc. I've literally posted up against some coyotes out in our pasture at 3 am in pajamas with nothing to protect me but my yelling and stubbornness. Thankfully the coyotes around here are whimps when it comes to people and are even afraid of our cows most of the time, so they raaaan. But I found em out there while checking on the cows, cuz it was calving season, and I'd be damned if I let them get near our sheep up closer to the house. I'd never shoot one unless it was actively attacking one of our animals, but I'm also not afrai
