Mechagodzilla is a city?! The second installment of the divisive anime trilogy is another dour one, but it's bolstered by unique takes on classic Godzilla lore -- from telepathic indigenous worshipers of Mothra (who is not in this movie) to the nanotech Mechagodzilla that threatens to take over the planet. But among this hard sci-fi nature vs. technology conversation is still the same pacing problems, self-conscious aversion to monster fights, and weird issues with women that plague this trilogy, and we can only hope... will it get better at the end?Part of The Glitterjaw Queer Podcast CollectivePatreon | DiscordEmail: skreeonkpodcast@gmail.comTheme song: "BIO WARS - Synth Cover" by Kweer KaijuSources include: Godzilla: The First 70 Years by Steve Ryfle and Ed GodziszewskiWikizillaGigazine Interview with the creative team
Board your space station full of despair and venture to the only animated Godzilla films with the Netflix anime trilogy! This first installment features a tree-inspired Godzilla hunted by revenge-seeking humans and aliens on a desolate Earth 20,000 years into the future... and it's about as cheery as it sounds. We talk about this trilogy's reputation and the deliberate attempts to swerve away from standard kaiju fare, its nihilistic streak from a writer nicknamed "Urobutcher", and the downside of only getting 1/3 of a Moby Dick-style story.Part of The Glitterjaw Queer Podcast CollectivePatreon | DiscordEmail: skreeonkpodcast@gmail.comTheme song: "BIO WARS - Synth Cover" by Kweer KaijuSources include: Godzilla: The First 70 Years by Steve Ryfle and Ed GodziszewskiSciFiJapan interview with Hiroyuki SeshitaWikizilla
A smog monster that goes from tadpole to spaceship! Flying breath-powered Godzilla! People melting into skeletons! Artist Andy Vanderbilt joins us for one of our most hotly anticipated episodes -- a movie that tackled the existential threat of pollution and became one of the weirdest and most gruesome Godzilla films. We talk about why this beloved and divisive movie was the only feature film Yoshimitsu Banno ever directed, how Hedorah has become so iconic despite appearing so rarely, the famous animated interstitials and nightclub hallucinations, lots of rotten fish, and more!Buy Andy's book: Adventure Ace: Valley of the Giant SnakeMore from Andy: Bluesky | Instagram | TwitchCover Art by: Hamish SteeleThis episode also features appearances by:Chris Cummins (Sci-Fi Explosion)Russ (Kaiju ComicCast)Hamish Steele (Super Mario Moment)Part of The Glitterjaw Queer Podcast CollectivePatreon | DiscordEmail: skreeonkpodcast@gmail.comTheme song: "BIO WARS - Synth Cover" by Kweer KaijuSources include: Godzilla: The First 70 Years by Steve Ryfle and Ed GodziszewskiA Critical History and Filmography of Toho's Godzilla Series by David Kalat“Hedorah Attacks” on MyKaiju.comWikizilla
Mother Mothra swoops into this sequel to 2002's Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla that is also, shockingly, a sequel to our queen's 1961 debut! We talk about the swerve into fantasy and reverence for the original Mothra film -- including bringing back Hottest Man Alive Hiroshi Koizumi to reprise his role -- while tackling the "built a robot out of Godzilla bones" moral questions the first film ignored. We also get into the mechanic protagonist, Showa-inspired effects, lots of Super Sentai cast members, and more!Plus, a special appearance by former guest Donny Winter!YouTube | Growing Up Godzilla | PublicationsCover Art by: Ryan aka DearZeus (Bluesky)Part of The Glitterjaw Queer Podcast CollectivePatreon | DiscordEmail: skreeonkpodcast@gmail.comTheme song: "BIO WARS - Synth Cover" by Kweer KaijuSources include: Godzilla: The First 70 Years by Steve Ryfle and Ed GodziszewskiMasaaki Tezuka InterviewWikizilla
Oh no, your plans for a remote beach resort have been derailed by a microbiotic space alien that possesses people and makes sea creatures grow real big! Chris Cummins (Archie Comics, Sci-Fi Explosion) joins us for no one's favorite kaiju film -- but a fun one with loveable cuttlefish, crab, and turtle kaiju nevertheless, and a very important one to the history of Godzilla. We talk about the fraught production plagued by Eiji Tsubaraya's death, Ishiro Honda's disillusionment, and Toho being an evil corporation. Plus, a game of FMK with Gezora, Ganimes, and Kamoebas!Find Chris:Sci-Fi Explosion on TwitchBluesky | Instagram | LetterboxdCover Art by: Doug!Part of The Glitterjaw Queer Podcast CollectivePatreon | DiscordEmail: skreeonkpodcast@gmail.comTheme song: "BIO WARS - Synth Cover" by Kweer KaijuSources include: Ishiro Honda: A Life in Film, from Godzilla to Kurosawa by Steve Ryfle and Ed GodziszewskiWikizilla
This one's for the softies! Russ from Kaiju ComicCast joins us to learn all about Godzilla's feelings as he faces his own drag persona -- the crystal girlie Godzilla clone from space! We get into the penultimate Heisei film's focus on psychic hero Miki sporting a snazzy new cut and killer fits, the heavy bent toward romance, a new cute-enhanced Little Godzilla, and why this movie is unfairly maligned (it's because men hate having feelings).Find Kaiju ComicCast:Podcast | Bluesky | InstagramCover Art by: Taner Ergin (Instagram)Part of The Glitterjaw Queer Podcast CollectivePatreon | DiscordEmail: skreeonkpodcast@gmail.comTheme song: "BIO WARS - Synth Cover" by Kweer KaijuSources include: Godzilla: The First 70 Years by Steve Ryfle and Ed GodziszewskiA Critical History and Filmography of Toho's Godzilla Series by David KalatIfukube InterviewWikizilla
Multicolored spacemen invade Earth, and they want land and ladies! Josh from the Biorante toksatsu subtitle database joins us for Ishirō Honda's first epic space movie, with an all-star cast and loads of effects innovations! We talk about this film's parallels to Japan's entrance into the United Nations, how it tackles fighting aliens without using nuclear weapons, and of course, the giant robot mole bug Moguera.Find more from Josh:Biorante Blog | Bluesky | InstagramPart of The Glitterjaw Queer Podcast CollectivePatreon | DiscordEmail: skreeonkpodcast@gmail.comTheme song: "BIO WARS - Synth Cover" by Kweer KaijuSources include: Ishirō Honda: A Life in Film, from Godzilla to Kurosawa by Steve Ryfle and Ed GodziszewskiWikizilla
It's time for Minilla to teach us about bullying! Vicki from Glitterjaw's Novel Gaming joins us for this children's fantasy about a latchkey kid getting into Home Alone shenanigans and learning to stand up for himself thanks to his imaginary adventures on Monster Island. As Godzilla swerves hard into low-budget children's fare, we talk about this film's unfairly maligned reputation, the use of stock footage (and why it's not a bad thing), the lessons that do and don't hold up, and that little punk Gabara!Listen to the Novel Gaming podcast!Cover Art by: Dave Davenport (@dogspunk)Bluesky | Instagram | Patreon | Tannix ComixPart of The Glitterjaw Queer Podcast CollectivePatreon | DiscordEmail: skreeonkpodcast@gmail.comTheme song: "BIO WARS - Synth Cover" by Kweer KaijuSources include: Godzilla: The First 70 Years by Steve Ryfle and Ed GodziszewskiIshirō Honda: A Life in Film, from Godzilla to Kurosawa by Steve Ryfle and Ed GodziszewskiA Critical History and Filmography of Toho's Godzilla Series by David KalatWikizilla
Long live the king! The Monsterverse swerves into this fanservice romp about mother nature vs. a climate change space dragon, all spawned from the messiest divorce of all time. We talk about the first ever Hollywood interpretations of Rodan, Mothra, and Ghidorah (and Kevin), this film's bend toward the biblical and mythological, the ensemble cast of all-stars, and the many references that may or may not make sense (what do you MEAN they're the Shobijin?!) We also get into this movie's complicated and frustrating relationship with the 1954 Godzilla film and nuclear weapons. The monster party's raging! Eleven kaiju unite in this crossover event and intended finale for Godzilla's universe...but more importantly, ANGUIRUS IS BACK, BABY! Streamer and voice actor Lauren Goodnight joins us to talk all those monsters, dubs, and metal slug aliens disguised as eerie women in sequins who make us question our sexualities. We get into the restraints that affected each monster's role, how this whole endeavor came together, and King Ghidorah's brutal ass-kicking.Find more from Lauren:Twitch | BlueskyCover Art by: Mars (@marsatax)Bluesky | Instagram | Art PrintsPart of The Glitterjaw Queer Podcast CollectivePatreon | DiscordEmail: skreeonkpodcast@gmail.comTheme song: "BIO WARS - Synth Cover" by Kweer KaijuSources include: Ishirō Honda: A Life in Film, from Godzilla to Kurosawa by Steve Ryfle and Ed GodziszewskiA Critical History and Filmography of Toho's Godzilla Series by David KalatJapan's Favorite Mon-Star: The Unauthorized Biography of "The Big G" by Steve RyfleWikizilla
Shed that rusted armor of patriotism! We're talking about the masterful sci-fi war film that includes an undersea empire full of bright wigs, a cat-eyed sea dragon named Manda, and a flying submarine. Like the Gotengo's drill, we dig into this highly political movie that tackles both rampant nationalism and the real-life legend of Mu, and includes some of the most captivating and haunting special effects sequences Toho has ever produced.Part of The Glitterjaw Queer Podcast CollectiveCover Art Gallery | Patreon | DiscordEmail: skreeonkpodcast@gmail.comTheme song: "BIO WARS - Synth Cover" by Kweer KaijuSources include: Ishirō Honda: A Life in Film, from Godzilla to Kurosawa by by Steve Ryfle and Ed GodziszewskiA Critical History and Filmography of Toho's Godzilla Series by David KalatWikizilla
We've gone back to the 50s for the unbelievable flying squirrel himself, Varan -- and he deserves better than this movie! Corporate shenanigans and bad luck made a cheap made-for-TV serial movie become retrofitted for a theatrical release, resulting in a boring imitation of better kaiju films. The Good: Varan's costume made from peanut shells and vinyl hoses, and his many cute moments of hiding and flare-eating. The bad: Real-world racism in this film's presentation of indigenous people, and a lot of characters running back and forth through the woods.Part of The Glitterjaw Queer Podcast CollectiveCover Art Gallery | Patreon | DiscordEmail: skreeonkpodcast@gmail.comTheme song: "BIO WARS - Synth Cover" by Kweer KaijuSources include: "The fight for self-representation: Ainu imaginary, ethnicity and assimilation" by Marcos P. This one's for the sad girlies! The Millennium era's Frankenstein-like reinvention of Mechagodzilla brings us the long-awaited BONES GODZILLA, as the original creature's corpse is resurrected as a cyborg known as Kiryu who cries blood and shoots an ice bubble. We get into whether this robot dinosaur is a haunted tragic figure or a redemptive heroic one, and the many conflicting themes of loss, self-loathing, the value of life, and ambiguous character ages. Plus, plenty of Evangelion and Megaguirus talk!Cover Art by: Alo (Zketchart)Instagram | BlueskyPart of The Glitterjaw Queer Podcast CollectiveCover Art Gallery | Patreon | DiscordEmail: skreeonkpodcast@gmail.comTheme song: "BIO WARS - Synth Cover" by Kweer KaijuSources include: A Critical History and Filmography of Toho's Godzilla Series by David KalatGodzilla FAQ: All That's Left to Know About the King of the Monsters by Brian SolomonWikizilla
The Frankenstein Brothers are ready to rumble! In this sorta-kinda sequel to Frankenstein vs. Baragon and the final Japanese/American collab with UPA, gargantuan bros Sanda and Gaira -- one friendly and peace-loving, one violent and hungry -- have a battle to the death, but not before extensive sequences of military fights, people-eating, and a big musical number. We get into this film's underlying darkness, the troubles with lead Russ Tamblyn (of Twin Peaks!), and a strangely empty story for the human characters.Cover Art by: DougPart of The Glitterjaw Queer Podcast CollectiveCover Art Gallery | Patreon | DiscordEmail: skreeonkpodcast@gmail.comTheme song: "BIO WARS - Synth Cover" by Kweer KaijuSources include: A Critical History and Filmography of Toho's Godzilla Series by David KalatIshirō Honda: A Life in Film, from Godzilla to Kurosawa by by Steve Ryfle and Ed GodziszewskiGodzilla FAQ: All That's Left to Know About the King of the Monsters by Brian SolomonYouTube Compilation of UPA Version DifferencesWikizilla
Come for the robot dinosaur, stay for the cutest bestest baby boy! In what was originally conceived as the finale of the Heisei era, big names Mechagodzilla, Rodan, and even a new Baby Godzilla arrive for this nature vs. technology story, where humans and the military are unambiguously the bad guys and the monsters are just seeking their adopted family. We talk about this era's odd use of Miki (and how this film makes an effort to fix it), eerie psychic songs, Mechagodzilla as corporate pride, all the smoke, sparks, and spotlights, and Derek's all-time favorite Godzilla character.Cover Art by: Radical GatorPart of The Glitterjaw Queer Podcast CollectiveCover Art Gallery | Patreon | DiscordEmail: skreeonkpodcast@gmail.comTheme song: "BIO WARS - Synth Cover" by Kweer KaijuSources include: A Critical History and Filmography of Toho's Godzilla Series by David KalatGodzilla FAQ: All That’s Left to Know About the King of the Monsters by Brian SolomonShelley Sweeny interview with Vantage PointWikizilla
Ditch the TARDIS for Tokyo Tower! Hamish Steele returns for Toho's second attempt at King Kong, which includes a supervillain named Dr. Who (!!!) creating Mechani-Kong, a giant robot ape version of the lonely and horny real deal. We get into this movie's origins as a Rankin-Bass cartoon -- and the on-set conflicts caused by those American co-producers -- along with all the James Bond DNA (including a literal Bond girl), iconic English dubbing, and how this is a better sequel to classic King Kong than you'd expect.Pre-order Go-Man: Champion of Earth!Part of The Glitterjaw Queer Podcast CollectivePatreon | DiscordEmail: skreeonkpodcast@gmail.comTheme song: "BIO WARS - Synth Cover" by Kweer KaijuSources include: Ishiro Honda: A Life in Film, from Godzilla to Kurosawa by Steve Ryfle and Ed GodziszewskiA Critical History and Filmography of Toho's Godzilla Series by David KalatWikizillaLost Media Wiki
Godzilla is in his tired dad era, because he's got a new ugly baby to take care of! Zakzilla joins us to meet Godzilla's firstborn son in this chill and mellow island adventure, even amongst all the GIANT BUGS created by stellar marionette effects. We talk about the strangely sinister science experiment story in an otherwise comedic movie, along with Minilla/Minya as queer representation, Butterface Godzilla, Kumonga's uncomfortable mouth, and more!Cover Art by: UltraMellowArtInstagram | Twitter | Bluesky Part of The Glitterjaw Queer Podcast CollectiveCover Art Gallery | Patreon | DiscordEmail: skreeonkpodcast@gmail.comTheme song: "BIO WARS - Synth Cover" by Kweer KaijuSources include: "Coming Out" - a stop motion short about a trans kid by Cressa Maeve ÁineJapan's Favorite Mon-Star: The Unauthorized Biography of "The Big G" by Steve RyfleA Critical History and Filmography of Toho's Godzilla Series by David KalatIshirō Honda: A Life in Film, from Godzilla to Kurosawa by by Steve Ryfle and Ed GodziszewskiGodzilla FAQ: All That's Left to Know About the King of the Monsters by Brian SolomonThe Big Book of Japanese Giant Monster Movies: The Lost Films by John LeMay and Ted JohnsonThe Complete Godzilla Chronology 1954-2004 by August Ragone and Bob EggletonWikizilla
If you love gross freaks, body horror, and scathing indictments on government bureaucracy, then boy do we have the movie for you! Chels from The Q Division and And a Rewatch Podcast joins us to talk about her special boy that she couldn't be prouder of: a mutating creature who goes from adorable waddling googly-eyed baby to the scariest Godzilla of all time. We peel back the bloody layers of this masterpiece from Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi of Neon Genesis Evangelion fame, including America's political relationship with Japan, how this harkens back to the original Godzilla film, that devastating opera song, and more.Find Chels:The Q Division | And a Rewatch Podcast | Bluesky | InstagramCover Art by: Alex Gayheart (@mekagojira3k)Bluesky | Twitter | InstagramPart of The Glitterjaw Queer Podcast CollectiveCover Art Gallery | Patreon |DiscordEmail: skreeonkpodcast@gmail.comTheme song: "BIO WARS - Synth Cover" by Kweer KaijuSources include: The Notenki Memoirs Studio Gainax and The Men Who Created Evangelion by Yasuhiro TakedaGodzilla FAQ: All That's Left to Know About the King of the Monsters by Brian SolomonWikizilla
Oh lawd he comin! America's second crack at Godzilla is a chonky thicc absolute unit, and he's in a surprisingly artful and bleak disaster film from director Gareth Edwards. We talk about the on-the-ground approach to visuals, the military's involvement in the writing process (and some weak themes and characterization as a result), how the MUTOs just want to kiss and did nothing wrong, why the Monsterverse stands out among other cinematic universes, and more. We're talking two big topics this month! First, Derek spent the holidays in Japan, and he fills Doug in on his Godzilla-related experiences -- including a stay in the Godzilla-head-topped Hotel Gracery Shinjuku and their interactive Godzilla Room. We also announce our schedule for the first half of 2025!
Then, we re-air our Patreon episode on Hanna-Barbera's 1978 Godzilla cartoon (aka The Godzilla Power Hour), where Big G is a heroic fire-breathing, laser-eye shooting dinosaur guardian, a friend to a ship of science and adventure, and an uncle to his goofy nephew Godzooky.
