Perviz Bhote

A poignant tale of the loss of a pet and the heartache experienced by its mistress. But hope shines through the dark cloud of sorrow and despair when Robbie so naturally takes the place of the 'Old Darling'. Life presents numerous speedbreakers, but the human spirit is resilient. It will change gears and move on. Bahadurji is an adept at presenting picture-perfect descriptions, and the listener can see the scene unfold in the mind's eye. 'Of Old Darlings...And New' will touch a raw and tender nerve for all those who have opened their hearts to the loyal friendships of the animal world.

The Day The Tea Grew Cold vividly captures the enquiring mind of a child and the keen sense of observation that is not yet dulled with an overdose of information. The narration by Tehnaz Bahadurji is as usual very evocative, and one sees the story unfold through the child's eyes and her understanding of the world. There is a moment of confusion though, when the child comprehends the numbers tatooed on the old gentleman's arm, because as she herself states, she had no previous exposure to the events that had occurred in Europe. But on the whole, a beautiful unravelling of a child's curious mind.

'Chinese Jars' recreates a typical upper-middle-class Parsi home in which the Chinese Jars referred to, would be a part of the paraphernalia of a well-appointed home with artistically fashioned victorian furniture and other trimmings. Homes where moral codes are strictly adhered to as an automatic extension of religious training. The tomboy girl 's character comes round full circle when she experiences the guilt for her misdeeds and mischief and wishes to make reparations for the loss that her brothers suffered on her account. But child as she is, her thoughts only encompass her age. It is in later life that she feels remorse on realizing that her mother had not been compensated for the loss of her favourite Chinese jars. Some can only be authors of good stories, while others can be good narrators. Bahadurji has managed both roles with great skill.

A very well-narrated story that vividly captures scenes at the horse farm and at the race course. But most striking was the warmth of feeling that transpired between horse and the protagonist, which could be experienced by the listener. Ms Bahadurji has displayed a photographic skill in descriptions, and the whole story came to life with a perfect narration. Look forward to many more such 'listening pleasures'.
